6. The Christian Hope
This final presentation on the Christian Creeds focusses on the Christian hope. What difference does faith make to the way we understand our world and live within it? It closes by considering a series of images that help us understand the role of the creeds. They are like maps, helping us to find our way as we journey through life. They are like chapter headings in a book, telling us what it contains there so we can appreciate its structure and explore its many aspects. They are individual rooms in a house, each with its own distinct character and focus.

มุมมอง 4989 หลายเดือนก่อน
Alister McGrath explains how believing in God is about the discovery of someone we can trust, and who gives us meaning, identity and security in this messy, uncertain and perplexing world. For Christians, faith is not primarily a set of ideas but a vision of reality, which transforms the way we see ourselves and the world. Faith is about stepping into this greater vision of life, and living it ...
Surprised by Christianity 3. Surely God is just a wish-fulfilment?
มุมมอง 3519 หลายเดือนก่อน
Many argue that God is a construct of the human mind, something that we create to shield ourselves from a world devoid of meaning and personal significance. But it’s not that simple. Human beings are very good at constructing worlds that correspond to their desires. In this presentation, Alister McGrath explores how atheism can equally be considered a wish-fulfilment, and reflects on our tenden...
Surprised by Christianity: 2: Isn’t belief irrational?
มุมมอง 4729 หลายเดือนก่อน
Christianity is about beliefs - things that cannot be proved to be true. Surely we should limit ourselves to what we can know for certain? It’s a nice idea, but things are much more complicated than this simplistic approach suggests. We can only prove shallow truths, not the deep moral and existential truths that give meaning and purpose to life. Oxford professor of theology Alister McGrath her...

People are always asking "What is the meaning of life?" And I always answer; "Why does it have to have meaning."

Everything you wrote is hogwash. True. You love your sin so much. Can you give me good evidence that you evolved from a monkey? Is this verifiable?

Love your talks, Mr. McGrath. You're one of the people I always go back to listening to. Been doing this for years, just never got round to mentioning it. Sound words become more and more precious as the world becomes more and more deranged. I can't believe what I'm seeing when I step out my door these days. I live an ocean away from Oxford, but I imagine taking one of your classes would be a pleasure.
