Remote Camping and Exploring near the Salton Sea-The Land of Extremes

We took advantage of the long Thanksgiving weekend and loaded up our Gladiator and Summit trailer to head east to the Salton Sea. This is an area we didn't have much experience with, and had never camped out in that area. We utilized "HipCamp" (http:www.hipcamp.com) and found a strip of private property that was on the dry lakebed on the eastern side. Her site on Hipcamp is: "True Off-the-Grid ...

Scrubbing in the New MotoZ RallZ Adventure Tires
มุมมอง 512 หลายเดือนก่อน
After a lot of research, I ultimately chose a set of the Australian tire brand, MotoZ, for my 2012 BMW R1200 GS Adventure. I chose their "Tractionator RallZ," a relatively new line of their tire lineup. The RallZ is billed as an aggressive off-road tire with reasonable street manners. I wanted a tire biased towards dirt and I was willing to sacrifice a bit of road comfort in exchange. My initia...
2025 Trek FX 6 Unboxing & Build

I was fortunate enough to get a 2025 Trek FX 6 through my son's shop, REVOLUTION CYCLES, in Eureka, CA. I thought I'd share how it went together out of the box. I'm not a bike mechanic and have never put a bike together before out of the box, so this is from a layman's perspective. It's actually pretty simple, so I wouldn't be worried if you can't find a local dealer. The Trek FX 6 is a gorgeou...
Overlanding Adventure to discover the secrets of the White Mountain Range of California

My friend, Sam, and I took off from Southern California in our overland rigs to explore the massive White Mountain range than runs near the Inyo National Forest. We drove our Jeep from San Diego to Prescott, AZ to explore the area, take in the local vibe, and of course, Mountain Bike. We discovered the Peavine "Rails to Trails" trail and thought that would be a good place to start. Little did we know that there were offshoots of the Peavine that led from mild to wild. Jeep Gladiator diesel simple enhanced engine cooling effort

After watching the temp gauge climb precariously towards overheating on a recent trip back from Arizona, I wanted to explore some simple ways to better allow the engine to cool. Over time, Michelle and I realized that our road bikes were becoming increasingly uncomfortable to ride. Michelle and I enjoyed running a couple of laps on our favorite local trails. Very nice bike. I bought the Dual Sport 3 Gen 5 to keep the cost down, but swapped out the tires and seat to make it better for fitness riding on streets. After I got in better physical shape I bought a Roscoe 8 to handle my trail riding. The Dual Sport is a nice bike for the price, but the FX Sport 6 was my ideal.

    The FX SPORT 4 now is the matte carbon for 2025. Which is slightly lighter than the 2024 color “deep smoke.” Which I don’t think Trek should’ve done as 2025 FX SPORT 4 still isn’t up to par with the 2024 FX SPORT 6. At the very least the frame color should’ve been dropped down to the 5.

    I believe if you purchase a bike and shipped to your home you should know or have knowledge on bicycle assembly, truing and adjustments. If you dont have the knowledge then i suggest going to your near bike shop let them do everything for you and pick it up. They may deliver the bike for you.

    The hubs and wheels need to adjusted and trued out of the box. Most of the axles are over tightened from the factory. Some cone wrenches and spoke wrenches would be nice. TBH, not sure how you'd buy a bike in a box from a shop and not have this explained, bedding the pads etc.

    How long is the drive from High 78 to the trailhead. How's the cell service around the trailhead. My friend (JIN FANG) has been missing for 3month. They found Jin's travel partner, a man named John Root Fitzpatrick, body & truck in Harper Canyon. We have questions about the circumstances around their death. Can you answer those question.

    • @motleymeanderings
      @motleymeanderings ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m actually somewhat familiar with the MP case, Jin Fang. I volunteer with Search & Rescue and have been involved with ongoing search efforts. Jin’s backpack was found near the 78, but we think it was washed down the canyon by the rains. It’s about two or three miles up the canyon to the trailhead from the 78. The cell coverage is really bad at the trailhead. The truck was on the other end of Harper Canyon, near Pinion Wash. We think they hiked out through Harper canyon instead of going back up Pinion. He was found near the trailhead of Harper Canyon. We will be searching the area again. Our K9s can only be in the heat for short periods, so we’re breaking up our search efforts into morning efforts. It should start cooling soon out there. I’m sorry for the loss of your friend.

      Thanks for these details & for your efforts to locate Jin. Since Jin went missing on July 22, this searching is the first glimmer of hope that Jin may finally be found & brought home to her family. How was your team able to tell it was Jin’s backpack? Did it have markings or ID in it? Most hikers who go to Harper Canyon to do the loop trail get to the trailhead via Old Kane Springs Rd to the E. Looking at a map, Pinyon Wash runs S from Hwy 78. Does your team think that JRF got from his truck to the trailhead via Pinyon Wash or some other route? Would appreciate it if you could clarify,

    • @motleymeanderings
      @motleymeanderings ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slmt999-p6n We think they went in through Pinion Wash based on the extensive damage to the truck. The squeeze and heart attack hill are along that route and they’re both very challenging for a stock vehicle. I can’t give many details on the investigation side as it’s an ongoing LE investigation but items in the backpack indicated that the backpack belonged to Jin. We will continue to search.

If JRF's truck went thru the Squeeze & Heart Attack Hill, you would think there would be dark blue paint on the rocks at those 2 locations, especially given the extensive damage to the truck. Did anyone check the rocks for paint? From your description, it sounds like the truck was more or less at this location: 33.105531, -116.288387 Am I in the ballpark? It would be helpful to visualize the approximate distance from the truck to the trailhead where JRF was found.

      @@davidschmidt9508 Thanks! We’re going off the extensive damage to the truck. They could have also gone up Fish Creek, but that’s the only two ways in to where the truck was located and where a truck can access. He was found near the entrance to the trailhead of Harper Canyon. It is a very remote hike from the fish creek area to the entrance at Harper. It’s rocky and difficult.

    I was in Eureka in July. Great town and surrounding forest area, very much like Arcata, it seems. But your travelogue definitely makes me want to Go to Arcata.

    You guys don't seem to worry about running into snakes. I would be more leery. 🙂

      Hi Steve, actually we're pretty snake aware. We make a lot of noise as we move, stare at the ground, generally step slowly and carefully and use our hiking poles to alert any local inhabitants. Oh, and Michelle usually makes me go first! 😂 Thanks!
