I appreciate the fact that Brotzman did what he did. It's a tough listen, but just the fact that that music was performed in the first place is pretty freakin' awesome. Brotzman passed in June of '23.

I did see that Fallon episode. What kinda shocked me was that the Roots should have known better. You know those cats are familiar with Brotzman. Hell, even I was offended.

What I hear in Kamasi's work isn't all that groundbreaking when one considers the work of Yusef Lateef, Alice Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders decades ago. Discuss... Carry on.

I've seen Wynton numerous times and would rather see Mehldau these days.

I don't think the "free jazz" genre ever came to a close. There are any number of contemporary jazz artists out there today playing and recording free jazz. I hope it never comes to a close. I also do not use the term "free jazz" to define what I believe to be "avant-garde." Some would argue that point, but I don't know that playing a more free form of jazz necessarily advanced or moved jazz forward. Your site just popped into my algorithm and I subbed. I would have loved to have this sort of dialogue with my father. Carry on.

When I first listened to Coleman's 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' I didn't really like it, and I didn't get it, but something about it made me want to listen to it again. After I listened to it again, I wanted to listen to it again. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it now, but it has become one of my favorite jazz albums.

The biggest reason I don't care for Free Jazz is I'm not musically trained. Because I do not know music in terms of chords, modes, consonance, dissonance etc., I cannot appreciate the musicality of Free Jazz. For me it just sounds like cacophony where everyone is playing their own thing. It's kinda similar to a lot of Contemporary Art, Contemporary Classical music, Contemporary Literature etc. It's almost like the people doing it are doing it for the in group rather than for the general audience. As an amateur I can't be bothered with most of it. Which I think is okay, because I really feel they're not producing art for the masses but connoisseurs.

Free Jazz is not for everyone and I wouldn't recommend it to people newly getting into jazz, as might take time to grow on you. When I first listened to Ornette Coleman, known as the father of free jazz, I was like you and thought I am being scammed. I recently went back to listening to him again and it surprised me how much I enjoyed it and now listen to it heavily, and I think Ornette is a genius. My recommendation is to go back to it and listen to it again at a later time and you might really enjoy it it.

Loved hearing about Delaneys journey in music...she is a true pro. We have a great video made in grandma and grandpa's kitchen using all the pots and Pam's and a few wooden spoons to rock with her homemade drums!!! ❤

I have also seen Tia Fuller at the Purdue Jazz Festival when Delaney travelled for Jazz Band competitions.

hello, i have been looking for the name of a song that i believe was played/written by T Monk you can hear the song in the last scene of the movie Thick as Thieves featuring Alec Balwin (a movie about a thief that appreciates rare jazz collections) (although not many songs were played), would anyone here know this song, i remember this song grom somewhere.... thank you

So, he has an album called Straight No Chaser and there is a group called Straight No Chaser. Is there a correlation between the two. I also saw on the Embassy sign downtown that the group will be here in Fort Wayne.

amazing I'm just getting into jazz I've had a few brief encounters with the jazz over the past decade or so. I started with Mahavishnu Orchestra and initially got into some jazz fusion stuff. I then bought 2 cd boxsets about 7 years ago "the perfect miles davis collection" containing 20 of his best albums. another was a massive herbie hancock boxset. then I've got some Neil Cowley Trio albums and lastly the comet is coming full discography. obviously, I want to explore some more jazz albums so finding your channel is going to help me go on a musical journey so thanks for being here. Just subscribed

Btw, it was a Metallica Concert…after he had me listen to the album with the words in front of us and realized they were singing about “follow the god that failed” and I had no idea what they were really singing about… I just enjoyed the “music”. One of the greatest influences in my life tried to help but I just wanted what I wanted. Thanks for never giving up Dad!
