Tomsix – Soundbones 1974 1979 USA, Progressive Rock
Tomsix - Soundbones 1974-1979 (USA, Progressive Rock)
The band "Tomsix" was founded by the Tomsik brothers (hence the name) in Cleveland and existed for a long time under different names, but was never able to release anything and soon fell apart. This archival CD, released in a limited edition (about 250 copies) in 1994 by "Behemoth Records", presents recordings of the band from different years. Excellent sound quality and quite a diverse progressive material.
When I created the Midwest Progressive Rock list for RYM, one of my secret hopes was that I would receive recommendations for something similar. I knew I would get suggestions of albums that were on the fringe - or worse just anything that was from the Midwest (and I did of course). But if someone could offer a complete bullseye for the style - a band or album I'd never heard of - well, then, my list would be a complete success. The very first suggestion came in from Tony Coulter, and it was Tomsix. An absolute diamond in the rough if there ever was one. An album that's been out almost 20 years and still a complete unknown. I received a great many suggestions afterward - primarily from Tony and our good friend Mark MoeCurly - but Cleveland based Tomsix was the winner of the litter for certain.
Not surprisingly, the earlier you go in the timeline, the more progressive the music becomes. The 1974-75 period is when the band was known as Tarsier (which is arguably a much cooler name than Tomsix, which incidentally was named for the Tomsick trio of brothers that run the band). This era of material is heavily influenced by Yes (a common occurrence in Midwest America) with a smattering of Gentle Giant - and there's gobs of mellotron for fellow fans of the instrument. Starting in 1976, the band switched names to Missing Persons (no relation to Mr. & Ms. Bozzio we presume), and directed their sound even more to the counterpoint rhythms and harmonies commonly found in Gentle Giant. The music is tight, slightly commercial, but still very complex. The absolute definition of the Midwest American progressive sound. Though the liner notes aren't clear about this, it appears the band then went with Tomsix starting in 1978. Not surprisingly, this era of the band finds them at their most commercial, with even a slight funk/disco sound creeping in. I would say at this point, the band sounds most like Supertramp, but more progressive than that may imply. Tomsix never did properly record an album (such a shame too, as the quality of the sound on this compilation is very good). The material is not presented strictly from a chronological perspective, though the progressive tracks are front loaded (demonstrating to me at least, that's where the heart of the band lies).

Ariel - The Jellabad Mutant 1974-1976 (Australia, Heavy Progressive Rock) The band's second album, recorded in 1974, was never released. This is a collection of demos for an unfinished 'rock opera' Mike Rudd had intended as the follow up to A Strange Fantastic Dream. I presume 'unfinished', since no clear narrative emerges from the collected songs, so I assume more was to come. Being demos, the ...

Marc Benno - Lost In Austin (1979 us, splendid blues southern rock) From the first gut-wrenching guitar licks to a spicy south of the border ode, Marc Benno's "Lost In Austin" is full of funk, vibrant vocals and breathtaking instrumentation. It's perfectly produced by Glyn Johns, showcasing Benno's banner writing talent (he wrote or co-wrote all of the songs except Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash"...

Anjo Gabriel - O Culto Secreto Do Anjo Gabriel 2010 (Brazil, Krautrock, Psychedelic Rock) The group has all the characteristics of a great Krautrock band, but best of all is that they do it with their own style, the sound is chaotic at times, hallucinating, it has the lethargic essence of space rock bands. It's difficult to remain indifferent listening to a band from Pernambuco, made up of youn...

An Dro - Les Jeux Sont Faits 1982 (Germany, Prog Folk) The sole album from the obscure band AN DRO features Breton, French and Celtic folk woven together with mild rock arrangements and sometimes vague world music nuances. Though the vocals are mainly French and Breton, this album was released on an independent label, probably a vanity release, by a band with virtually no recorded history which...

Eumir Deodato - Samba Nova Concepção 1964 (Brazil, Samba-Jazz,Bossa Nova) had pretty much two different careers, or so it seems from his discography. Early albums from the mid '60s range from samba jazz (like this one) and lounge onto his more well-known fusion sound in the '70s. This one is a nice listen that doesn't do anything out of the ordinary musically, but it still makes for a good list...

Well if it's heavy prog ordinary prog or just rock it's most enjoyable
😮this one's compositions are actually from while the twentyfirst century In any case, I like it very, very much.
Such a musical history causes me to wonder what other recordings were never released. The whims and capriciousness of record labels have only gotten more pronounced over the years. At least some of the A & R people and a few label bosses seemed to care about The Music. Now the only concern is how much “product” can be sold, said the grouchy old man 😂. Cheers , John !
excellent piece, thanks.
Never know something ab. him and the Set-List sounds like a Super-Band. First Song sounds like JJ Cale with Eric, second like George H., they had a lot of fun, but its a bit to clean, there is no dirty playing
One of my all time favourite albums! I was into Eric Clapton and funding his name on the musicians list of this album I grabbed it from a secondhand vinyl store in London in the 1980’s. Thanks for the upload!
We were preparing to sail from UK to the Caribbean on a 60’ schooner. Owner of boat had a friend at A&M Records who gave us a bag of cassette tapes one of which was Marc Benno “Lost in Austin”. The rest nothing!!! We spent 21 days and 21 star filled nights sailing, and every day the music of choice was “Lost in Austin”. The fun lyrics and get up and dance music along with the reality and humor kept all 7 of us on a constant high, even in the storms and thru doldrums. I carried and played that cassette tape for the next 10 years. It did stretch and distort the cover title song until finally one day it broke. For the next 10 years I searched for another copy. A few times I contacted A&M direct and they told me there were no more tapes available. I even tried to track down Marc Benno when I settled down in the states. Without the availability of the internet I was fighting a losing battle and so missing that one album that played in my head all the time. I let it go for a few years. In about 1999 I did an internet search one more time, and to my surprise there were 2 cd’s of “Lost in Austin” available from a company in Japan. I ordered them both at $42.00 each plus shipping. I was so excited, but didn’t say anything to anyone unless they didn’t arrive. One copy for me and one copy for my old and dear friend Phil, my watch partner for that 21 day sail across the Atlantic. When I received the cd’s it was a day of unbelievable relief. I could listen to my favorite album of all time. My buddy Phil thought I had performed a miracle. Since owning this album I have shared it with so many people who have been as equally moved by the voice, the music and the soul of Marc Benno. This feels very strange for me now as a 62 year old man, to try and express the meaning of one album and one Texan musician who has given me more pleasure listening to him than even the greatest Rock & Roll band in the world. And now to find out that the only other love in my life, AAH works with the wife of my favorite musician in a small Hill Country town in Texas is all just so overwhelming.
Very good sound ! Wow ! Congratulations from Brazil ! 🇧🇷🎸👏👏

when i got back into collecting, this was one of those that i read about that supposedly nobody could ever find an actual album and thus i had zero chances of making a tape trade. when i saw that it was reissued on cd years ago, i scooped up a copy that i still have.
