In this video I perform the hit Gorillaz song On Melancholy Hill but only use my voice, keyboard, cat piano, melodica, and kalimba. The song is the 10th song off Plastic Beach (2010). As the name states the song has a melancholy tone and lyrics as it is about a state of sadness about not being able to be with a person you hold dear. On top of that the song absolutely slaps and has an iconic lead bells part that is capped off by 2-D's classic filtered out vocals. I found this song to be interesting to cover because my singing could easily be covered up with many vocal effects, somehow my voice still sounds terrible on it. After finishing this song in a short few days I am determined to move forward with this project. I am going to start slowly covering each song off of the 3rd main album in the Gorillaz discography in the order they appear on said album. The first song will likely take a long time as it is an orchestra playing and to cover that with my voice will be extremely difficult. There is no due date for this long-term project and my main goal is to complete it at some point. If someone is interested in featuring on the album please text me. This song is comprised of over 20 different parts. The drums and bassline is done by my voice, the main organ sounds are done by the melodica and cat piano, the three bell sounds are done with my keyboard and kalimba, and the ending bell is me smacking a Yeti cup with a rubber spatula (also me going bwanngggg underneath). The rest of my song is voice for better or for worse.
Perhaps the most moving part of the video is the music video which took me several minutes to create. While it may appear that the image is still, it is actually slowly zooming in on the horse. This camera-work is similar to that of the Grammy award winning Parasite (2019) directed by Bong Joon-ho. The subtle camera work draws your attention to the spot before the reason why is made clear. The horse is a metaphor for me and it is looking out into the vast ocean searching for answers to its life. The horse can only say one thing, "MAN" (in impact font). The horse is really deep in its feels and can't think of anything to say. The heavy rainstorm the horse is standing in does not deter it, as it is too sad to move. This further shows that a horse is really going through it. Later in the music video we can see the horse catches on fire, (not really, no animals were harmed in the making of this video) keep in mind I am the horse so the fire is also a metaphor. The fire represent the passion the horse develops and how he is finally ready to do something about his situation. This can also all be proven because you can see the local news reporting about the whole scenario live.
