This is a symphonic poem based on Shakespeare's 'Scottish' play. The major action is presented (the prophecy, Thane and Lady plotting, murder of King Duncan, the Porter's speech, the banquet, the witches dance, Lady M's night terrors and death, and the final battle of....sound and fury signifying nothing); but the emphasis is on the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters. Joseph Jones - First Symphony for String Orchestra, Op. 2
มุมมอง 152หลายเดือนก่อน
Composed in 2003, this 3 movement symphony for string orchestra stands as my first mature work. The first movement is elegiac and lushly romantic; the second, a tempestuous scherzo with a gentle, Viennese-style trio featuring two solo violins; and the finale a free-wandering fantasia. มุมมอง 1092 หลายเดือนก่อน
'A Common Truth' is an opera based on the play 'The Respectful Prostitute' by Jean-Paul Sartre. This two act opera explores the attitudes, culture, and power structures of racism in the United States through the eyes of a young woman as she's strong-armed and tempted by a man of great privilege to say the 'right thing' regarding the murder of a black man by his cousin. A story of power, class, ...

Joseph Jones - Op. 67, Cupid and Psyche ballet
มุมมอง 1475 หลายเดือนก่อน
The story of Cupid and Psyche is simple: The God of Love falls in love with a mortal woman, the impossibly beautiful Psyche, and desires her for his own. Their love is consummated, then torn asunder through jealousy, temptation, insecurity, and hubris (and the machinations of Cupid's own mother, the Goddess of Love, Venus). Yet neither will give up on love or each other and in the end, love pre...

Wonderful work!
Love it. Would love to see it as well. Ray Evans Harrell
Good rehearsal!!
Well done, Joseph! I applaud you being willing to explore different avenues.
This is so beautiful.... wonderful orchestral colors in this. I expect high quality from your work and this certainly lives up to that expectation!!!
@canalesworks1247 thank you so much! It was a lot of fun to write and I can't wait to get it performed live.
Excellent!
Very nice! I love the darker mood.
How interesting you've ended with a haunting tarantella...I ended my 1st string trio with a tarantella as well. I liked this movement...I have to confess I could not grasp a harmonic intent or direction in the opening movement and was wondering if there was an idea of mixing tonality and free atonality here.
Thanks so much! Yes, the opening movement was a bit of a gamble for me both formally and harmonically--trying to allow for a lot of freedom and ambiguity. It was a nice challenge not only to figure out if it works but also figuring out how to make it work.
@@JosephJonesComposer It's definitely a challenging thing to do.
Just one question: Did you really intend the strings to play the countable repeated sixteenth notes in the fourth movement or are they supposed to be non-distinct tremoli? Of course, played by the playback library from the notation software unfortunately this sounds somewhat annoying. Perhaps with real musicians it would have a more subtle effect, but in the digital rendition I would try to take these repetitions back dynamically or try to let them not sound as mechanically as they do here, because they make the last movement to be the weakest of the symphony, which is a bit sad, because there are wonderful moments in it. Again: I don't mean to offend you here. I just want to get a grip on what was your original intent and idea in this movement and how much you would say the playback rendition represents this original intent or not and how nuch the listener should add in their minds.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad the work resonates with you. As for this: these are meant to be tremolo throughout, a shimmering effect. MIDI of course plays it back somewhat imperfectly (perhaps an understatement) and I always try to correct for that with my inner ear. I don’t do much to the MIDI (I notate in Sibelius and export-I don’t use a DAW) and always figure that the playback will only give me a fraction of what I imagine and what real musicians are capable of. Thanks again for listening!
What, no comment yet? Dear Joseph, I'm glad that the TH-cam algorithm brought me here, because I'm growing a companionship of new symphonists here and I'm always delighted to find new colleagues, voices and works that are inspiring to me. And your symphony surely is! It is carefully and well-crafted written, with accuracy, on the point, there seems to be nothing superfluous in it, every single note is so carefully and deliberately put. The movements have very distinct and consequent characters... I love your sense for proportions, the persistence of your formal development and the thorough working out of the thematic material, really bringing it to full potential. Your harmonic and melodic language is fascinatingly both full of hints to tradition and on the other side fresh and new and quite unique. I feel very much related to your style, it talks to me very strongly! So, congratulations to your meticulous and astonishing work! I just subscribed to your channel and am curious about getting to know more of your exciting creativity! I myself am---at this moment---on the brink of finishing my own first symphony. I hope I will be there until the mid or end of June. If you're interested I'd be very happy to welcome you on my channel and join me there when I'll finally be able to put my symphony into the light of public. I wish you all the best, keep the good work flowing!
Bravo!! A modern composer who actually understands the Clarinet. Well done!!
Is this piece available for purchase?
@@brianjungen4059 I've not published it yet but would be happy to send you the score directly.
Well done mate!
I recall well what was happening in NY at that time. What a great way to return to composing. The pandemic spurred me to finally start composing seriously. I'm so happy to hear you comments on your process the struggle to not be slavishly attached to models, or on the other hand novelty for novelty's sake. Well put. This is a form that has fascinated me as well and would some day like to work in. I look forward to hearing it.
So happy to find this today. Love that opening motif...some serious, dense motivic music...and lots of dissonance. I love the motif of the finale how you've transformed the 1st movement motif into a faster more athletic variant and later on when you bring back the original motif. New subscriber. Will be check out more of your work.
Excellent!
If you had let me listen with a blindfold on I'd have sworn it was one of the forgotten 19th century compositions that youtuber Martin Walsh has recreated using NotePerformer. This doesn't at all sound like the work of a 21st century composer, not even a Neo-Romantic, but just straight up early Romanticism, something akin to the music of Franz Berwald, William Sterndale Bennett or Ignaz Moscheles. It's a shame it only has a little over 100 views. Also appreciate the irony of naming this a 'Simfonietta' despite it being 43 minutes in length. Great stuff!
Thanks for listening! This was certainly a student work for me--a pre-student work, in many ways, as I was entirely self taught when I wrote this at age 17. I was definitely following my heroes at the time and was thinking Haydn-Schubert, so it's actually quite amusing that so much romanticism found its way into the work!
super writing!
Who is man expecting to play this shit
Omg awesome work, I love suspense ands playfulness
Nice!
This is fantastic! So interesting hearing you explain the text and then play the music. I’d love if you did more videos like this.
Beautiful work..reminds me a bit of Berg Lyric suit. Vewry nice melodic ideas.
I wanna play this
Beautiful
This should be a movie soundtrack!
Regal and jovial!

Great work! Any luck with getting this performed?
Thank you! Not yet.
Where will this musical journey take us? Let's find out!

This is the most accessible of the works I have heard from you so far. Very dramatic!
Beautiful. Grabbed my attention right away with those opening chords.

Sublime and utterly poetic.
Wow, I love it. I wish I could see a close up of the score. The drama really speaks to me.
Perfect for this holiday season, thank you!
Excellent.
Wow. Amazing piece. Beautifully orchestrated as I’d expect of course. What is Sound and Fury. Would definitely like to hear the whole thing.
Thank you! 'Sound and Fury' is a tone poem I composed in August 2020 and is a paraphrase of The Scottish Play. You can listen to the entire thing here: th-cam.com/video/nkqlf9ApP-Q/w-d-xo.html
