The Making Of A FrankenTama Snare Drum
มุมมอง 4.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Like many drummers, I had an old Tama steel snare drum shell lying around, which had been stripped of parts. I didn't want to waste the perfectly good shell, so I decided to marry it with inexpensive generic lugs and other parts. The Frankenstein monster result, which I call a FrankenTama snare, came out pretty well! If you want to do something similar, this video documents the whole process.

Easy DIY Internal Bass Drum Muffler
มุมมอง 3.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I figured out an easy bass drum muffling hack you can use for an adjustable, internally mounted solution to excessive ring. Pillows and blankets work, but I wanted something a little more elegant and stable. You may even have the needed items on hand already. Here are some links if you don't: ► To Purchase amzn.to/3rTj1Zj (Tama MC 5 Clamp) amzn.to/3h4MVnf (Tama clamp with L Rod) amzn.to/3rORMz0...

Evans GMAD Bass Drum Head Compared With Remo Powerstroke 3
มุมมอง 12K2 ปีที่แล้ว
On my vintage Tama Imperialstar bass drum I've used the Remo Powerstroke 3 head for several years, but I wanted something a little more punchy. I decided to try the Evans GMAD bass head instead, and then compare the two side by side in a recording. The GMAD head has a unique foam ring muffling system. Ultimately they are both excellent heads, but which you prefer may depend on the sound charact...

Aeonian Sky: Composed and Recorded In Reason DAW
Zolatone is the paint. Was popular in many applications for a while until Rhino Lining, Line X and other more durable paints replaced it. I used Zolatone bedliner on my pickup bed back in High School, got 2 different kinds because I couldn't decide which one, mixing the two actually gave me a color scheme that I was actually quite happy with. That year Chromalusion Purpleen had just come out that year, so I got a pint at $319, that was after a discount from the dealer because I used the school's account to purchase it. Glad I wasn't painting the entire truck that crap is expensive. Used it for color changing ghost flames on the hood. Came out wicked. Sold the rest of the paint to the school, which was most of it. Ghost flames don't require much paint. So I have a drum that the bearing edge needs work but the biggest issue I see with it is that it's not even...I mean, if you place the drum with the bearing edge mentioned facing up...then look level at it you can notice that the edge has a couple low spots...say it was a snare(it's not but for simplicity sake) so it would normally be 14"x5" but it gradually dips down to about between 1/8" to 1/4" less than 5" then gradually raises back up. Like rolling hills. How can I get that level again, which I assume must be done before redoing the bearing edge? And I have no flipping clue how it got that way either. Maybe the years of whacking the rims warped the wood? Or maybe just poor craftsmanship? They were a relatively cheap drum set.
That's what I was doing at 11:37. You put sandpaper on a dead-flat surface like a table saw or a large piece of MDF, and then twist the bearing edge around while laid on that flat surface. It will quickly flatten the whole edge before you cut the profile.
A drum company has lugs of every kind of size, named Drum factory! Check out Rogers Center Lug Double Ended Die Cast Snare Drum Lug, this one is the size. I think he meant 1-15/16s(49mm).
Handy tip: Use drumheads that aren't so stretched out that that the hoop is below the bearing edge, so that sticks will not smash the bearing edge you just re-cut.
That's not actually what was going on, if you are referring to the end. The Tama Imperialstar 6 and 8 inch concert toms from that era came with special hoops which did sit just below the bearing edge, even with new heads. I presume the idea was to allow more strike area, but it was a dumb design. I did finally source replacement hoops of the normal variety and replaced them, but the 6 inch hoop is not easy to find.
I'm a simple man ... I like deep & low sound from my bass drum ... So i picked GMAD 🔥
Great idea!
Are you still using the DIY internal mics you made? How are they working? Im thinking about trying it out cause its a pain to position and take off mics every time i have a show 😂
For those wondering, this snare shell is the 1st generation King Beat snare. Great drums. No need to weld over the lug holes for 1/16th of an inch; Simply bore out the existing holes. I have the same shell and just simply bored them out and the 2" lugs went on with zero issues. Leave the extra holes as is so that it gives the drum a drier sound as it's simply an extra airhole. The drum does look sharp. Props!
This was beautiful and inspirational. I also is a drummer, and I live in a apartment, must only have E-drums. That is torture. I have Tama superstar some where. I will follow you. Jesus bless you!
Thank you! I hope you get some more time with your acoustic kit soon.
awesome many thanks
I am a guitar and piano player and try to learn Cubase 13 pro to combine my music. I ordered this MIDI Keyboard and hope it will help me.
How did it go? Like the midi controller?
I like the rack to be part of the look of the entire kit, I think the stealth is a nice concept but it just doesn't work for me.
I'm old enough to remember the days when hardware was really not up to the challenge of even holding things steady and in place. I'm happy just to be able to fit things where I want and have it stay there!
Thank you for making this video. I would have just put a clamp or two on the drum in repairing instead of making what you did with the pine. Much appreciated!
That would be okay if the shell is still solid and not out of round. But, if your shell has become out of round or the damage is significant, then the pinch blocks cut to the shell radius will keep the shell aligned while the glue cures.
Got a 13” x 12” imperial star I’m cutting this week. Great dude I to help get around some of the hurdles. Mine has no reinforcement rings.
Existing solutions in the market are way too expensive. Selfmade solutions much appreciated 👍.
Nice job, btw, thank you! And what impedance of the speaker you are applying?
That's an 8 ohm speaker, but when using it in this way you'll just set your gain to where you are getting a solid signal into your DAW or soundboard.
I miss my concert Tom’s
What mount are you using that the cymbolt fits on to?
It's a little weird, but it works. I think it's a Gibraltar mini-boom bracket but with an L-arm installed instead of the normal boom arm. And the bracket is attached to the hi-hat stand with a Tama multiclamp. Basically a mish-mosh of spare parts.
@@tinderboxartsmusic Thanks! So it just fits onto any old cymbal mount or L-arm?
Oh, I see what you are getting at--it requires a cymbal mount. The L arm I had was for cymbals. It would not work on a tom mount L arm.
Thanks for the video, very interesting. I plan to do the same on my toms, however I have also the reso head to deal with. I was wondering if you somehow have had experience on how it sounds with also reso head on. tks
When you are miking this close to the batter head, it's mostly that head which comes through. It's going to be a "dry" recording without much ambience from the rest of the drum, or the room. The upside of that is that you get a fairly isolated track for each drum and you can add EQ and reverb or other affects later in your DAW. The downside is that you will not get a live room sound or much of the resonant head, which can sometimes be desirable. In your case the resonant head will still do it's job of controlling batter head tone and decay, but what you will be recording is mostly the batter head. I'd say this style of miking is appropriate for rock, fusion, electric country, and other pop styles but probably not so good for acoustic jazz or other acoustic oriented music.
sound great look great
Does it have arpeggiator function?
No, something like that would be accomplished in the instrument software or DAW you are using. This keyboard is just for providing MIDI input for the notes and a few other basic functions.
What's the name of that app you're using to edit your kicker??????
That's just the DAW that I use, called Reason. I really like it because it sort of models the physical world gear on the screen, which suits old guys like me well! You can find more about it here: www.reasonstudios.com/
@@tinderboxartsmusic I'm saving my money to buy some good drum mics. Thanks for your info!!!
It’s All in the edges!!
The gmad. The tray itself muffles slightly so like a G1 with a felt strip sort of. I am a Remo guy but I like emads and I don’t even use a ring and if I do it is around 6” of the thick ring I tape in so it doesn’t fly out upon impact.
Great track John! Love the video snips. Bravo on your musicianship qualities
cool, just watch the phase when mixing
Pretty cool idea and it looks factory installed and better Id say buddy. Thanks for sharing
Uhh six lug student model! I don,t think they constructed the more pro drums like that!
Yes, this was originally sold as an entry level snare. Before you dismiss it, though, the sound quality is actually quite good for jazz and orchestra styles. The six lugs allow more resonance. I wouldn't generally use it for rock or other heavy styles, but I love it for lighter use.
That's an interesting project! Were you worried about painting the bearing edges? I know when a wood drum gets repainted, it's important to tape over the bearing edges. But I'm not sure if that's typical for a metal shell
That's a great question, actually. I have a lot of experience with paints because I own a remodeling business and because I've done a lot of automotive work over the decades. In this case it was a metal shell, and I was using a spray enamel. As long as you give it time to cure the paint should hold up just fine on the bearing edge. I don't spray heavily there so I avoid build up, and that ensures that the paint won't affect the tone in any great way. For wood shells you could make an argument that keeping paint away from the bearing edge would provide a smoother point of contact and allow the use of waxes if desired. However, I also have been using Tama toms with the "Zola coat" finish for decades, and that is basically just paint. In fact, it's a pretty rough painted surface and it extends to the bearing edge. Yet, they sound just fine. So, I think if you want to paint wood bearing edges you still can, but I would also recommend keeping the coats light and allowing the paint to fully cure. A lot of people don't realize that standard latex paints can take weeks to fully cure, even though they may be dry in an hour. A few days is enough to build a functional cure, though.
Everyone was building to international standards basically! My bet is a 30 degree round over! That was the standard in the 60,s!
Man your kit and playing sound killer awesome. cheers
Thanks!
Beautiful sir.
Thank you!
I'm in the process of redoing my new 12 pc. Double bass setup.never owned one B4, and it looks cool, but at 68 years old having a hard time getting around the kit,and placement of a few toms never really worked out.after trying about everything,I've decided to just make 2 kits and use my double pedal on the 22" kick with 8,10,12,13,16,18 toms, and make a little jazz kit with the 20" bass, and 12"Tom,14"floor tom. I'll have the best of both worlds I guess.Im going to miss the big double bass setup, but I think it willale me a better player in the end. When you get my age, these old legs and arms don't move like they once did.Enjoy your new configuration, they look stunning.
I played double bass for so long it didn't seem like I could do with just a single bass and a double pedal, but now it seems natural. I also started creating another (third!) set using the previous second bass drum. Believe me, the effort is worth it to get the toms better situated and your legs a little closer together. Getting old is no joke! I'm MUCH more comfortable now and my joints thank me for the minor investment in a pedal and racks.
Very nice,looks great.
Thanks for your important information it is very helpful.
All I use is two felt strips batter & reso. That's it! That's all you need!...but,really cool idea!!😃👍
You might want to try putting a automotive rubber hose on the arm the mic is on. This way the clamp is grabbing on the hose and should act like a shock mount, absorbing vibrations that could transfer up the spur to the clamp and the mic. That is unless that clip you are using has a built in shockmount.
Nice job, that drum looks great re-done.
Wax with a scotch guard pad.....Ssssmoooooothe.
Got my first double in '93. Single chain drive DW 5000. Never gone back, not even for shits and grins. Couldn't possibly care less about the rebound controversy. My back doesn't care, either. Ditch the second kick.
That’s super clever! Major props to you brother.
NICE !
Beautiful kit, man! No shortage of love for the double bass Tama kits!
I have nearly a full set of early 80's lugs from a tama imperialstar kit. Rims, Tom mount, bass drum legs, lugs casings and two 24" bass hoops. If anyone is interested hit me up.
if my bank account didn't say $0 i'd be on this in a heartbeat!
Great job and sounds good!
Those steel shells were top of the line spun and seamless. The were a hidden gem.
I agree--they really were great and they were used across the entire Tama line.
That's way better than just leaving it hanging around or throwing it away, looks and sounds good! Nice job thanks for the share.
Love the colour as well..... Make the chrome on outside really Pop
incredible job.....
👍
Beautiful job! Love the new & improved sound
