GMC Motorhome Window Rubber Seal Replacement

1976 Palm Beach - Technique for replacing window rubber seals. Not a lot of fun, but doable with thin putty knife and much patience.
DR K10 RapidFire Woodsplitter
มุมมอง 5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
DR inertia wood splitter that I use for splitting fine logs for Russian fireplace. Makes short work of multiple passes. I had to extend wedge as it only accepted 16" logs and many of mine run up to 20 ". The plunger stops 5" short which is sometimes an issue if the wood is "hairy". But I have a 4x4 pressure treated block that I can use to drive it home. Only needed once every 1 out of 100 times...

    THANK YOU!!! I just came inside, because my thumbs were too sore to move anymore. I will try the putty knife method you posted. What a drag of a job this is!

    Uh oh! Don't use WD-40 on rubber! Use silicone lube instead but only if it rubber and don't get it on the silicone caulking seal that goes outside of that. Best way is to dip that rubber into very hot water and soak for 2 mins. Then use a heat gun on rubber just before pushing it in. The rubber softens up and it is much gentler on hands. Good to see what that seal looks like. I have a Class C that needs work. I have to get the right seal for it too.

    I just installed about 60 feet of this type of rubber on very large RV. Helpful tip just heat it up real good with a heat gun or hair dryer. It makes the rubber maluable and it pops right in. Lubricate with windex, keep your fingers wet and slipery to save your thumbs. It will evaporate fast on the warm rubber, just have plenty on hand. Warm soapy water might work too. Stay away from the WD40 or other lubes, it will limit the life of the rubber.

    What does that rubber seal do? Is it protecting sealer underneath? Does it just make the window look better? You call it a seal but is it? My Dutchmen has these around the window and they are very loose.

      In hindsight, yes that would work. I'm not worried about WD40 deteriorating the rubber. There are 10,000 other things to worry about when you own a 1976 GMC Motorhome...

    DR has discontinued this splitter without telling anyone, they sold out the last they had and now you can't even search for it on their site. They say you will be able to get parts but that remains to be seen. If I had it to do over again I would not buy DR equipment.

    • @bradsnyder8802
      @bradsnyder8802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see that DR has discontinued the K10! There is a K10 looking splitter for sale on FB and I wondered if it had different specs (longer throat) and found NOTHING on their site. Too bad. A SuperSplit is the way to go. Although I like the small size of the K10 as it doesn't take up much room in the garage.

    Could you put an extension on the rack to make it reach the additional length?

    • @bradsnyder8802
      @bradsnyder8802 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably. Or buy a longer rack. It splits 98% of the logs (soft maple) just fine. I do have a pressure treated block that is just the right length to stove it home if needed. A little risky as it sometimes pops out at speed. I have split a lot of wood over the years with some nice hydraulic splitters. These inertial splitters don't get enough credit. Faster by far.

  • @bradsnyder8802

    Sorry for the electric motor noise and bad audio. A comment you may not of heard is that it has an Acme thread rack/pinion and it engages hard on occasion (depending on timing of trigger).

    New rubber glazing makes job much easier. I’ve done it myself. Steele seems to make the best. (Avoid Pelland’s outrageous shipping). Stay with soapy water and goes in great. There are 2 sizes of that type of windows seal/glazing. Larger one only by 1/6” or less, but makes a diff. My GMC rv uses both sizes which was confusing. My large size nearly impossible to get in some places, but small sloppy in others. Geeeeez. Last BIG mistake to use WD40 on this project. These seals are rubber. WD40 petroleum based and does not play well with rubber. It will degrade the rubber quickly. Just use soapy water. While you still can take those rubbers out and clean away all that WD40 from frame, glass and rubber. You’ll be glad in a year or so.

    • @toddsnyder5135
      @toddsnyder5135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JayHutch can you share the link for the supplier of the two sizes of window rubbers? Is it from a company named Steele?

    • @JayHutchG
      @JayHutchG 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toddsnyder5135 Sure Todd - I got mine at Steele Rubber Products. Go to their website and then to camper/rv, then windows and glass. Y0u'll see a lot of it you can order by the foot. There are 2 types for the types of windows discussed in this thread. The first I bought directly from Steele. The second set was from Steele but via Amazon. Go to Amazon and search for Steele Rubber Products and you'll find a lot. Shipping is pretty extreme for some of it. But it will be good fresh rubber and a hard to find product. MEASURE carefully the old one, so you use the right size on the right window. Too big and it can be difficult or impossible to get in place. Too small and it won't do the job.

    Added Comment - The rubber seals came with the vehicle from the previous owner and were at least 10 years old. So maybe new seals would be softer and easier to put in. I didn't think my supply was very hard, especially on the warmer days.
