The Math Behind Mexico's Cartels
CSH researcher Rafael Prieto-Curiel's work sheds light on cartel operations through a data-driven lens, offering new perspectives on one of Latin America’s most pressing challenges. His models estimate that Mexican cartels have between 160,000 and 185,000 members, making them the country’s fifth-largest employer. His findings challenge traditional punitive approaches, revealing that even doubling arrests has minimal impact on reducing violence. Instead, he advocates targeting recruitment, as his research suggests this is the most effective way to disrupt cartel operations.
Rafael caught up with ZME Science at the 2024 Falling Walls Conference in Berlin to share his insights.

    Here is what I don’t understand. If the USA is such a great place to live in and they claim to be the greatest country in the world then why are so many Americans hooked on drugs?? The USA keeps these cartels in business. The USA can end cartel with just one step… stop consuming drugs!!! You stop the demand and the supply will crumble simple.

    Cartels Were Created By The USA In Order To Maintain Control Of The Illegal Drug Trade Around The World. CIA ,FBI,DEA Are 100% Behind Them. The New Mexican Government Regime Knows This Very Well And Is Suffocating These Groups and The USA Knows It And They Are Going Into Full Panic Mode Because Their Illegal Stream Of Money Is At Risk. Glorifying Drug Groups In Mexico Was Done By Netflix And Hollywood Which Is Run By The CIA. 80% Of The Guns Introduced To Mexico Comes From The USA. Guns That Are Supposed To Be Military Used Only. We are Not Stupid And This Will Come To The End.

    You forgot to equate the never ending variety of crimes each cartel members deploys( when each member does it's own type of crimes>hence like a snake does screw itself > so do drug Cartels members bounce onto all/any members on international committed crimes including Assassins for Hire',online scammers

    This town was Culiacan. The way to end it is Americans stop buying fentynal. Drug addiction fuels this.They need to unalive the real cartel peoples. The ability for those ķids to go to schools to stay and go to higher education. At the border those cars that are coming in search them for weapons since the US is the biggest supplier. And maybe its time Mexico introduces the unaliving them as a sentence.

  • @wolf17238

    What a load of bull 💩. Cartels are glorified in Mexico thru music and movies. People will always come in voluntarily. Also, if the cartel wants someone to join, they're not going to give them a choice. They'll join by force. They will never stop recruitment.

    • @ClementePablo-f8f
      @ClementePablo-f8f 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One example, the cartels force young men to join and if they don’t they kill them and they kill their family… that’s what recruitment really is!!! Stop that and you have a chance ending the cartels!

    HE IS CONFUSING THE WORD "PROGRAMMING" WITH "SYSTEM DESIGN" REMEMBER IN THE GOOD OLD IBM DAYS YOU HAD SIMPLE FLOW CHARTS AND DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS, WRITTEN BEFORE YOU STARTED A PROJECT. NOW MORONS JUST START "PROGRAMMING WITH OUT SPECIFICATIONS" MOST PROGRAMMERS AND TEACHERS HAVE NEVER SEEN A SIMPLE IBM FLOWCHART. SINCE MOST COMPUTER PEOPLE HATE IBM, THEY DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANY IBM METHODS. UML CHARTS ATE A CONFUSING JOKE, THEY VIOLATE ALL THE PRINCIPALS OF SIMPLE DESIGN. IBM FLOW CHARTS JUST USE 4 SYSMBOLS, NOT 40. WITHOUT A GOOD DESIGN SPECIFICATIONA AND CHARTS, THE PROJECT IS LOST. WHEN I TAUGHT PROGRAMMING, I WOULD TELL MY STUDENTS "IF YOU CAN NOT FLOW CHART THE PROBLEM THEN YOU CAN NOT CORRECTLY PROGRAM IT.. ;

    With all do of my respect sir, but I can not agree with,, diversity problem ". Let me get something straight. Discrimination is a cancer and I am strongly against judging people based on their religion, gender, skin color etc. But at the same time I am as well against pushing,, fake diversity" into people. Everybody makes their own life choices including education. If in your class of 50 people are no women or ethnical minorities that simply means that none of them wanted to attend your lecture, because there is no form of formal prohibition against them. Moreover you were upset that in your class are only white people. I find it kind of biggotry. What the hell is wrong with skin color of your student that you got upset?

    The avenue of self play in [multimodal]llms has not been explored because of the high cost of inference. I assume that using self play will outperform previous systems just like what we saw with alphago etc. Just immagine llms that talk to themselfs trillions and trillions of times, drawing conclusions, making plans for self improvements, experiments etc. But coversly, my intuition tells me that llms trained on cat sounds won't do much more than cat sounds; train llms on dogs barking and you won't get much more than barking; train llms on human generated data and you won't get much more than human perspectives. To solve this "human bias" limits, an AI should be allowed to hunt fo it's own training data independently from humans.
