Thanks!
Nice!
Great Video Brian. Bringing out the 1980 manual was def. a great flex.
Thank you for this series. It's super helpful
Thanks! I hope to get back on it again soon.
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen.
Thanks!
Great tutorial, thanks!
Thanks!
Way too complicated and doesn't work if you want to resample something. Easy solution is to just set a global hotkey in Live (cmd/ctrl+k) to toggle the SoundID plug-in on and off when you need it.
In part 2 I address resampling by using a listen bus and a pre-master track.
This was very useful! Thank you.
Thanks!
And as a person who talks to Mastering engineers...they don't seem to care...and just use their favorite one for everything they do...or would have disagreements over it so ugh... I guess it doesn't matter as long as its one of the POWr algorithms... I think from a scientific answer...it would be to render out an average EQ analyzer for your song...and then choose the dither with the least amount of masking...
THANK YOU!!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much... this has been a years-long head scratcher for me!!!
You're welcome!
hi Brian, very interesting video ! I am mixing dub music live in Ableton and want to be able to hear the music with the sonarwork correction but in that case i would record my mixing session (live recording the master bus) with sonarwors on, and that s gonna affect the mix, in the audio recorded. Then my question is how should I set up the listening bus to preserve my mix bus processing without sonarworks correction ? dont know if it sounds clear, cause the key point is that i have to record live my mixing session ?1 thanks for your help
Thanks! Check out part II. It goes into using a pre-master track that solves a lot of problems when using a listen bus.
Or, you add an audio track, name it “RECORD”, input is “Master” (pre fx), use that channel to print your L+R mix and use “Master” like you always do, with SoundID active.
That’s a totally viable option. In part two I talk about using a pre-master as the track you actually select when you export. I don’t really see an upside to using a “print” track to record the mix in real-time unless you are integrating external hardware. We have less flexibility when using a print track, and additional steps for file naming and management. Is there another reason that you work this way?
Thank you! I actually had most of these sites open in my tabs
You're welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial. I just don't understand why SoundID can't simply turn off Calibration when exporting, since it already DOES detect that Live is exporting audio...
That would be a really nice feature. Not sure why they don't offer that as an option.
Super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to properly research this 😊
You're welcome!
Many thank for finally provding a clear answer!
You're welcome!
Hi there. I'm having a concept problem with it. Can you please tell me do I load it on the master plugin, then work on my mix again but keep comparing it to the new green calibration by switching on and off the plugin? Or am I missing something..... I've emailed SW dozens of times and watched all their vids but they presume I know something which I actually don't. Thank you.
If using with speakers in a room that you calibrated, you want to make decisions with it enabled in your DAW and when playing back on your system with the app.
You only need to turn it off if you have it on the Main out and are exporting your mix.
Hi! I'm using Audient iD14 MKII and the SoundID Reference. I've named my outputs on the iD14 to 1+2 is "DAW" and 3+4 is "Internal" so everything else on the computer goes to output "Internal". SoundID is inputting 3+4 "Internal" so everything I hear on my computer is being processed by the software correction. Now I did this listening bus on Live 11 but cannot get the sample browser preview to be corrected as well. I tried setting the "Cue" output on the master track to 1+2 and 3+4 but it doesn't change the output in any way and when I look at the iD14 software I can see that the "Cue" output goes through the corresponding outputs "DAW" and then "Internal". Lives audio output device is set to iD14. Any help here?
There is no simple way to get the browser's preview/cue to go through room correction/monitoring software. You can mess around with virtual cabling software and aggregate devices (MacOS) to create some sort of loopback setup, or run another piece of software that loads plug-ins OR experiment with using Sonarwork Systemwide as your driver in Live. But on the latter you will get additional latency that can make MIDI performances with virtual instruments problematic. The best solution would be for Ableton to add a control room feature as found in other DAWs.
can we do undo split?
You mean other than command + Z?
Hi, what is the name of the vst file, i do not find it in my SoundID Reference directory
Not sure I understand the question. Can you rephrase it or give me more info?
Awfully complicated. Isn't it easier to just remember to turn it off?
I have simplified it quite a bit as I started using the Macro Variations feature once Sonarworks updated the plug-in to support more mappings. For a simple setup it's probably just fine to leave a sticky on your desk or something that reminds you. In part 2 I explain more complex workflows where you avoid exporting via the master and don't have to care about whether it's on or not.
Good tips. 🤟
Hey Brian, thank you for this! I'm in the middle of Mastering a song and the Dither question came up. This video brought so much clarity. Really appreciate this!
Hey John, great! Happy to hear someone found this topic useful.
Nice solution. Only am I overlooking something or does the sampling function no longer work?
Thanks. You mean resampling? Yeah, you have to unmute the utility on the master first. The part 2 video covers workflows that don't require you to mute the master track.
im having trouble with this because i then cant preview samples in my browser ? any ideas ?
Make sure the Cue output on the Master track matches whichever physical output you're using for your Sonarworks.
@@formlabsnyc I figured it out ! :) my only problem now is resampling audio tracks haha ? Any ideas there it’s not picking up anything
@@AztechNation Just pick resampling from any audio tracks audio from chooser and then record.
Seems like a very complicated way to avoid simply bypassing the plugin when you export. Also, you have to make sure you disable sends on any track which your returns are routed through or Live won't calculate latency correctly. So because Send B isn't disabled on 'PRE-MASTER' and none of the sends are disabled on 'Listen Bus' your sends will be out of time as soon as you start using any plugins which introduce latency. Might not be super obvious if they are just long reverbs, but it's something you have to always keep an eye on.
You are correct on a lot of things here. Though I don't use the sends on the Pre-master or the Listen Bus channels anyways, but probably should just disable all sends on those tracks even if it's not necessary. My setup is about a lot more than just not having to bypass Sonarworks. You may have noticed that I have 2 instances in place, one for speakers and one for headphones, so I can quickly switch between those options with a single click. And the rack also allows me to use RME Digicheck before the signal hits Sonaworks. And it's all saved as a one big preset so I can drag it into any project and everything is ready to go immediately. It's idiosyncratic for sure, but I think there's a lot of ideas people can take from it and make their own.
It unfortunately doesn't matter if you actually use the send or not. The fact that it isn't disabled will mess up the latency compensation. Try adding a bunch of plugins that require lookahead and you'll hear what I mean. (Unless it's something Ableton has fixed in the last few years. But back in the day it drove me nuts when I stumbled across this problem and didn't know what the cause was). I didn't watch properly because I was searching for a specific problem when I found your video , so apologies if I didn't understand the point. You could however use Macro Variations in Live to switch between calibration profiles so you only needed one instance of Sonarworks. And then simply place the 'External Audio Effect' before Sonarworks on your master bus so Digicheck is receiving the audio pre Sonarworks. Again, I haven't watched properly so if I'm still missing something please ignore me. Only trying to help simplify 😬
@@TjMoon91 @TjMoon91 I'll do some tests to see if active sends on the pre-master or listen bus cause any issues. Given the specific routing I haven't noticed an issue, possibly because I have them all off in actual projects - gonna look at some of them and see. But yes, active sends can cause serious issues when routing returns back into audio tracks for sure. Didn't know I could use Macro variations to switch profiles... never tried it. Good tip. I also pair DearVR monitor with Sonarworks for headphones and could also use variations to disable that plug-iin, but there are some other workflow things I mention towards the end on latency that leads to wanting them as 2 separate nested racks. Having everything in one rack that I can drag into any project is still the goal, for when I'm not working in a project that started as one of my templates, such as collabs, etc.
All pertinent sends are disabled in my actual template, but I likely did that so as to not create any accidental feedback loops. Good catch.
Boss moves,, .. thank you for the reminders,,!
Thank you!
Single stroke key commands - such as R for reverse - require the Computer MIDI Keyboard to be disabled, in the upper right between the Draw Mode toggle and Key Map Mode switch.
İ'm curious why you wouldn't just use Ableton's audio output in the preference to select Sound ID. it does the same thing without affecting the master output channel. why such a complicated setup when there's an easier solution. Just open preference, audio output, select sound id and you're done.
I am also wondering this. This seems way easier
There's significantly more latency if you pick Sound ID as your output driver.
"...adding Systemwide in the chain between your DAW and audio interface results in increased latency (around 20-50ms) which can become an issue when recording audio or MIDI." www.sonarworks.com/support/sonarworks/360003054159-Using%20Reference%204/360005460779-Using%20Reference%204/115001501869-Can-I-use-Reference-4-Systemwide-with-my-DAW-

De nada
Here's @tarekith 's channel - www.youtube.com/@tarekith. The other one I recommended in the video is linked in the info cards and description.
Also, as you mention, the limiter cannot push decibels without affecting the compression. So I have been experimenting with drum audio where transients are extreme and you can get a better idea on what's going on with the loudness. I found useful to try and find the sweetspot between limiter's gain and Uitility's one (after applying limiter) so I can match PRE-MASTER with LISTEN BUS'es metering. Both trying in rapid, short audio takes and long ones (e.g. the whole track till the end).
I don't try to match the mix bus/pre-master and the listen bus's meters, only their perceived loudness in case I want to A/B for some reason.
Yay! Thanks for uploading the second part! I have two questions, though. First, how about muting MASTER section and just check PRE-MASTER's one for metering? As long as there isn't any plug-in interfering between PRE-MASTER and MASTER section the metering should be identical in both instances, right? Second, how do you add a new macro variation? I have been clicking the "New" button, but nothing shows up. Am I missing something?
Correct, the Pre-Master and Master tracks' meters should be identical, so muting the master is fine. Check out this video on the Macro Variation feature th-cam.com/video/Yztw7UUjYq4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for showing this particular option. I have a question though - perhaps it is a bit stupid - but what happens If I want to have stacks of limiters, EQs and compressors in my Master Audio? If I bypass that chain, using the utility with the mute on, then I will not be able to listen to my final mix-master session, right? I am kinda new to these games, so If anyone has an idea, I would like to know. Thanks in advance!
I address the ideal workflow in detail in my part 2 video, which I'm still working on and should be up the next week or two. In that video I show you how to use a Pre-Master track, which is a Group for ALL of your tracks, and that's where you put your mix bus processing. But in the meantime, you can skip the listen bus and just do everything on the master, and just remember to turn off Sonarworks.
@@formlabsnyc Great! Thanks for the quick response! I subbed so I wont miss the 2nd part
@@dgkompoitsos Part 2 is up.
The part 2 video deals with mix bus processing and the lack of metering using the basic method. In the meantime, you can use a free plugin like Sonalksis Free-G, or drop this rack on your listen bus to use a parallel chain that sends uncalibrated signal to the meters - ln5.sync.com/dl/f74184f90/8yx9zhib-pr25bbaw-y3vh6ajz-vpgxbfza "...adding Systemwide in the chain between your DAW and audio interface results in increased latency (around 20-50ms) which can become an issue when recording audio or MIDI." www.sonarworks.com/support/sonarworks/360003054159-Using%20Reference%204/360005460779-Using%20Reference%204/115001501869-Can-I-use-Reference-4-Systemwide-with-my-DAW-
