Biking Barcelona
Spain
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ส.ค. 2021
Bon dia! And welcome to Biking Barcelona, where we explore the frustrations and delights of cycling in our city, and maybe see a few of the sights along the way.
Busy yet Friendly? Explaining Barcelona’s Av. Diagonal
Avinguda Diagonal is a wide road that cuts through the city from one end to the other. At times it even looks like this is the U.S. Yet, despite it being home to car commuters and office parks, and corporate headquarters, it also has shops, and plenty of space for pedestrians, and yes, bicycles.
So how does Diagonal manage to have it all? Let’s find out together how how even a busy road full of cars can still be bicycle/pedestrian/human friendly.
p.s. If you’re familiar with Strong Town’s concept of a stroad this video will be particularly interesting to you. If not, don’t worry about it all.
p.p.s. My (Jedidjah’s) favorite part is the history at the end. Not so much the history itself (though, yes, that too) but the perennial reminder that not only is change possible, but sometimes it's very easy and simple. (Sometimes, not always or even often.)

The +1/-2, biking to a suburban hardware store challenge, in Barcelona!
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
TH-cam channels Shifter and Not Just Bikes recently did a colab where they compared biking to a suburban hardware store in their respective cities, Calgary & Amsterdam. So of course we thought we should do the same thing here in Barcelona. We followed their lead and gave 1 point for everything we liked on our bike ride, and -2 points for every thing that was less great. Let us know what you thi...

Tactical Urbanism & Barcelona’s Future

A number of news articles have been making the rounds about how, since the start of Covid, the city of Barcelona has reclaimed eight hectares of car space for humans using “tactical urbanism”. We decided to head out to Consell de Cent-one the main sights of these interventions-to check it out and share with y’all what it actually looks like on the ground. Love your shirt
I’m surprised that for the entirety of the way you didn’t need even once to merge onto a road. +10 for that
Hey! Going to be in Girona for a few months. We should collab on a Barcelona vid!
So cool! Also, as you mentioned in the video, could you at some point do a video about Vila de Gracia? I'm super interested in its history and layout, and have started reading novels like In Diamond Square :)
Sadly, the few superblock intersections that exist in Barcelona aren't at all as great as they are advertised by the politicians. They all look like little mini-ghettos full of homeless people, trash, graffiti, garbage containers, etc. Not like a small park as they advertise it :(
I'm amazed at how the political will over there is able to achieve things like this. Over here, people scream until they're blue in the face if you so much as whisper about removing car lanes or parking.
Man, I would love to see this in Germany... But the car companies have so much power here by brainwashing people and bribing politicians...
i so wish bicing were open to non residents. the lanes looked amazing and cars usually fairly chill around bikes. thusly, as a pedestrian, i give -2 for all the dog S@*# especially when it hasn't rained. there seem to be nearly no strays in barcelona, so the excrement is all due to derelict dog owners. when i visit barcelona, i pray for rain (to wash away the ...). the cultural differences in the scoring is hilarious to me. big ups to ferias all over spain!
A lot of stopping! Would have been beautiful as a tourist, but frustrating if you're trying to get somewhere.
12:00 Jo en diria "portejat" o "portejada". Portejada també sona a la la barreja de porta i plantofada. Déu vos guard
I'm always amazed at how these guerilla changes can last more than a day or too. Where I live, the shop owners feel utterly entitled to use the on street parking, and if anyone blocked it then the council would be called immediately.
Love the chanel, but it's been so long that I'm beginning to think it's sun has set. Is there anywhere else we can follow/support y'all?
Just moved to Barcelona and i both love and hate the infrastructure here! I love its expansive ness and its prevalence but I've found it hard to communicate that even with great bike lanes it still feels so messy. Bici Nyap is a prefect word for my feelings. In gran via and passeig de gracia there is a similar setup that have gotten a couple of scares with cars before and i still dont understand how someone thought that was a good idea! Anyway all that to say that you should get back to doing videos they are great!
Non-expert from Barcelona with some personal opinions: 0:22 +1 for the mixed use. When I saw the video in Amsterdam and thought how would it look in Barcelona, my first thought was that hardware stores for small stuff are reachable on foot. 3:41 +1 for continuous improvement. 15 years ago that bike lane was mixed with pedestrians and it was the best in the city. Now it's rebuilt because of better security standards. In general Barcelona's bike infraestructure is a big trial and error that doesn't stick too much with bad decisions. 5:07 -2 for lesson not learnt. Pedestrians cross the bicycle lane without visibility because of parked cars, and that already caused one famous deathly accident (Muriel Casals) 10:15 I disagree with the -2 on the signal. But so far those signals are exceptions and it's hard to go from A to B through the safest route if you don't know well the streets in advance with all its tricks, so that's a different -2.
Bike lanes being boring and safe is a bonus +10 at least. Very enjoyable video for the progress and you.
As an American citizen who dreams of living in Barcelona, I love these videos. The integration of history with the built environment is fascinating, and I can’t wait to see more! One suggestion I have is to add some overhead perspectives of some of the areas you explore. Google Earth can be a great way to do that. Keep it up, guys!
Do you think you could do a video about Seville or Victoria’s street infrastructure?
Cool assessment and commentary!!
Barcelona infrastructure for bikes is really good, I challenge you to do the same in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat... Even el Prat de Llobregat has better cycling support (I usually go to the beach riding a bike). The bike lane in Gran Via sucks, you have to be super careful as people do not realize there is a bike lane on the sidewalk.
Way to go 👍
Aixó es una merda, les empreses marxen a Madrid, millors autopistes i accesos a la ciutat.
Ojalá en Madrid estuviese tan bien No se catalán pero en castellano diríamos portazo
Thank you for sharing. Seeing this from a Dutch perspective, I think the score is very optimistic. Far to many traffic lights and all those dangerous obstacles (poles) on the bike lanes and the very narrow bike lanes, sometimes stealing the space for pedestrians. But is is a start and better than nothing. If Barcelona continues the good work, it will get better hopefully.
3:02 I can see some benefits to left-side bike paths. The car driver sits on the left side of their car so they can see you better. Plus since there is a wide pedestrian median, bikes will not have to worry about cars turning into them. I hope Barcelona separates them from the road and makes them wider of course.
I love these videos! I’m subscriber No. 601, and I’m eagerly awaiting your next video
Thanks, maybe do one in Sevilla?
Thinking of moving to Barca from amsterdam but was indeed afraid of the cycling infra. But im happy to have seen your video. Its not bad at all! I could make it work and glad to hear the city is working on stuff! Thanks for the video ❤️
here in America it would be -100 🤣
Hi, I use this path every day, It's all about the sequence of the lights. The ideal case is that when I’m approaching, I have a green light and just go straight with no stops. Sometimes when I'm approaching I see the traffic from c/ d’Entença stating to cross. In this case I got to the other side of the avenue by turning left between the grass and the parking exit and take (the wrong way) the bike line just a fue meters and wait behind the little triangle that stands between Entença, paris & tarradellas. As soon as the traffic stops from entença you have enough time to cross back to the right side of tarradellas before the traffic from paris starts again. Finally if I’m approaching but didn’t saw the traffic from entença start it means I’m to late and have to wait until my next green light. I’m not recommending people to do this, but this type of turn well implemented saves time, I copied it from a 3 way street cross in Mexico City.
Hopefully the garish paint can be replaced with some green paint & lots of papers with crabgrass!
It's pathetic to see you can't cope with this, maybe you need to cycling the world first.
The city needs more signs showing how to get to certain destinations.
Came from not just bikes
Hi. Aren't you guys making more content?
Hi! Thanks for asking and for caring. We got overwhelmed with having so many followers and between this, the autumn weather, and our normal jobs we kind of "accidentally" stopped. In fact, we still have footage from October that we haven't edited yet! Your message gives us some encourage to start again, thank you!
@@BikingBarcelonaTogether thank you for your comment. I figured. I'm a road cyclist so if you guys need help with anything, let me know
Thank you! You are so kind!
@@BikingBarcelonaTogether Please do! I really enjoyed all of your videos and really want to see more!
I've read that bien dia use people in latin America and buenos días in Spain. I guess thats not entirely true.
Oh but we don't greet in Spanish but Catalan :-)
Fantastic. Barcelona is making a real effort to make city more livable. the scores given seemed very personal in some cases, especially in the case of women, sometimes they didn't even have to do with infrastructure for bicycles. in addition I think the final score does not represent the effort the city has made, this is due to the human nature of complaining more than praising. but just for the record... if this game were played in Portugal the average score in any city would be -200, in Porto in particular it would be -1000 😥
Barcelona es la ciutat de prestigi de tota Espanya i per a millorar les nostres ciutats i pobles per tot el pais hem de mirar-la! Avall en el cotxe, vista la bicicleta, el bus, i el tren
Great to see pushing back on cars! I am hoping to visit Barcelona this summer to see the superblocks and make friends with Barcelona. I am from Eugene, Oregon, USA. There is some car push back here but not enough. I can ride my bike for miles without cars nearby, a bike way along the river. Good luck and thanks for making Barcelona more livable! You can see what I have done on my own suburban home its a well know permaculture site th-cam.com/video/bsO4K1gG2Ao/w-d-xo.html and much of the project is pushing back on cars.
Sooo many traffic lights! But at the same time, this shows very clearly that NYC is out of excuses. And things are changing there little by little, but once you get outside downtown/midtown Manhattan, bicycle infrastructure becomes much more sporadic.
its seems so unconnected, when are bikelanes on the right or left side?
Looks messy, but still great compared to Calgary!
Excellent video and information. As a road ciclist, I really enjoyed this. I have gone up and down Diagonal without knowing lots of that information. Looking forward to move videos
the car at 5.11 has a pretty poor turn overall. His view is largely blocked by the plants and the scooters. Plus due to a relatively tight turn he can't really see bicycles until he is quite far in the turn. I think a bit more separation between the bike lane and the car here would have done better. Or remove the plants and shorten the scooter parking a little to clear up the view in the mirrors. Ultimately its still a driver error, but one that could be easier to avoid with some slight tweaks in the bikelane or parking.
I`m really enjoying these video so far! They are structured really well and your commentaries are informative and clear. Keep it up, I just subscribed :)
The great thing about compact cities (and not so compact cities) is that there are decades of experience available via the Netherlands. City planners do not have to re-invent the wheel. I'd say it is a great time for city planners from the Netherlands to branch out to other countries, or the Netherlands offering consultation to other cities in other countries so that biking can become just a means of transport, not biking. Barcelona, the city I plan on moving to 2022...COVID dependant.
Nice video. You are so right that iT is not needed to ride to most hardware stores....also here in the netherlands many are at Walk distance. So +20 for All cities Where you Can Walk
Enhorabona!
What occurred to me is that there have been so many efforts made, but it lacks a certain consistency. It will make things safer if it was done consistent, which is very effective in removing the factor of doubt. Props for making efforts to putting up bike lanes though!
+1 to the Dutch for not having a word for being 'doored' despite such high numbers of cyclists. Let's hope we can keep it that way in the Catalan language as well! There are just not many places where you will get doored in the Netherlands. Great pronunciations in Dutch guys!
Big hearts and thumbs up and subscription for the antifascist scarf !!! 🟥⬛
