Tokyo Marathon Showdown: Kipchoge vs. CJ - Who Rocked the Jordan’s Better? Ep. 185
In this episode of A Runner’s Life podcast, Corey, Phillip, Rob, and yours truly talk about the Tokyo Marathon 2024, where Kipchoge took on the course in style with his Jordans, sparking a debate over who rocked them better between him and CJ, who finally got his hands on AJ 3’s.
Speaking of CJ, he takes us through his marathon journey in Tokyo, highlighting the vibrant diversity of runners touching down in Japan's major marathon race. From sipping sake mid-race to experiencing road Mario Kart events, we explore everything from sushi to ramen and glean valuable advice on pre-race prep when traveling far for a field.
But the drama doesn't stop there. Rob drops a Boston training flex in our group chat, downplays it, and gets called out, only for Phil to up the ante with a bigger training flex.
On a lighter note, Rob shares his guilty pleasure of binge-watching TV series with a bag of skinny pop, revealing his love for "Love is Blind." He tries to blame his wife for watching it, but we know it was his choice.
We reveal that we will do a live podcast at the Boston Marathon expo Saturday on the main stage at 9:15 am, thanks to the B.A.A. including Lorna, and Adrienne.
We'll also discuss Meb Keflezighi’s 10th anniversary since his Boston win, and contemplate: what if Meb caught up with you on the course? Would you race or show respect to the legend?
To cap it off, Rob unveils another self-care routine and faux pas that'll leave you wondering how you ever lived without it. Tune in for all this and more in episode 185.

That shoe box is definitely not eco friendly.
What I think is that this is a great training shoe that will allow your foots and muscles work better/more. For racing I agree that the Takumi series is better but not useful for slow speeds.
May I know the name of the textbook that he is using for explaning the Lactate/Speed graph? Thanks!
Really cool video breaking it all down.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it
Marcus! I'm running Berlin for the first time this year...where do you reco staying?
Budget dependent, the closer to the start/finish ie the Tiergarten the better. However the transport links are excellent in Berlin so you can get better value just outside of that area.
Now i need a mustard sandwich!
thank you for that insight. A courageous move, to post it on a high profile media platform, but your affirmative and insightful words will surely benefit many.
Thank you. I’m grateful to Eric for sharing the insight.
great job you’ve done bro. can u compare to garmin predicted since unluckyly I dont have lab to make such lactate test in our country
Thanks pal! I’ll be honest I’ve not used garmin for a minute so I can’t comment on it. However Coros has a similar feature and for predicting race time and it has been fairly accurate.
I wish we could have an end to this "how accurate is my garmin this or that" -discussion. It's individual. For someone, it might be spot on, and for someone else completely false. Since Garmin doesn't even define what threshold their watches try to estimate, it's really impossible to even draw any conclusions. Different labs/countries have different protocols and data analyzing methods of establishing thresholds. Since LT2 is often established from lactate, and garmin's algorithm uses some sort of heart rate variability data to estimate the threshold, it can never be 100% accurate for everyone, since HRV and lactate correlates in different ways between indivuduals.
For example: My Garmin tells me that my "threshold" is at 3:36min/km. One month after that I ran a half with 3:23min/km avg pace. Would be physiologically impossible to keep that sort of relative intensity up for +70mins.
BANG ON
Thanks 🙌🏾
Isn´t this a trainer, not a race shoe.
Your comment highlights that this shoe is confused and likely a fad
1400v6 were really great. Feels weird to see this pair in carbon era. Though I still do my speed sessions in my 1400s

One question, does it cost money in order to be on the marathon?
There’s a few extras but it starts at €163. Some off which I feel should be included like the timing chip which is approximately €6
The Tree Flyer 2 is now out in 2023
Thanks for the update. How have you found it?
For some reason, your sound (talking only) only works in one side of my headphones. I tested in case it's my headphones but both sides work with other videos and music. Your music is fine. Odd...
Thanks for the feedback.
Excited to get the takumi sen 9 on feet once the colorway i want drops in price. But i got the streakfly on sale for around $100 and at that price, i think its worth it. Really love the feel on faster runs. Not a marathon shoe, but the shorter distances… its kinda magic (for me).
Yeah that makes sense. As long as it works for you, and it’s a decent price, that’s the main thing.
How long was it between your 4.05 and 3.01?
Between 4.55 and sub 3 was quite a while. I had at least 4 years where I didn’t run. And when I returned I was inconsistent, then I had at least 3+ years of structured and regular training before I broke sub 3
The shoe was made for 5 and 10k road racing? The Adidas is not cheap and made for 10k- half marathon. The Streakfly doesn;t have a carbon plate? There are alot of good reviews on the web of the Nike Streakfly. Racing flats and spikes are for the track and cross-country.
If you look on the adidas website it clearly states the Takumi Sen 8 is made for 5k to half marathons. So they are comparable. The point about the cost isn’t fully accurate, because I’ve bought a pair of new Takumi sen 8s from a retailer for less than the cost of the streakflys. When your talking about XC are you talking about UK or USA. If it’s UK winter club season, your a brave man to go for racing flats. I did mention a good 5k & upwards shoe not Nike or adidas that doesn’t have a carbon plate in the video. If you like the streakfly that’s fine, many people do. It doesn’t mean they are all right. But there are people like me who didn’t like it. And the same applies. That’s shoes for you, what works for one doesn’t work for another.
What shoes would you recomend for fast 1k , 1.5k... the zoomx destroys the streakfly and the takumi sen 8 seems to fat in the midsole? Do you think sen8 could suit that role?
Hey! I’d say. Go with what you feel best in. Whilst I’d go for the sen8 I know it doesn’t work everybody
track spikes
was the first lactate taken after a warm up or at complete rest ?
Hi it was all in one session. So a warm up and then straight into the test.
Hi it was all in one session. So a warm up and then straight into the test.
when I was running my first 50K, I definitely had a few doubts…, but I had to finish. I pushed through, though it looked bleak, at mile 23..
Thanks for sharing! Great work completing the 50k!
Good work man! Looks like you're set to smash your old PR. My heart sank a bit when I realised your lt1 pace was above my lt2... but I guess that means I have a lot of room to improve
Thanks glad you enjoyed it!
I've watched thousands videos like this and every where test was failed, like here, between 14 km/h and 17km/h you should make a lot of test with 0.2-0.3 km/h increments, not a 1km/h (this is a huge jump), otherwise you will see such a not informative plot chart (bullsh@t), sorry for my spelling... how will you find from such chart a marathon pace and threshold pace if one of each other stay in reality around 7-10seconds pace difference? 1km/h increment is equal to 17seconds pace difference... that a huge!!! ma-ma mea, all labs in the world make same stupid mistake... I could not believe. I suggest you to go to the lab again and make proper test with 0.2km/h speed increments at least in area from 1.8mmol speed till 4.5 mmol speed and you will see a complete different picture,
Thanks for the feedback.
If I’m understanding this right. So more stages with 0.2 increase in speed? You would need 4-5 more stages at 4mins a time. You’d be worn out and risk injury and further training could be impacted trying recover from another 20 mins at 3-5k effort.
Not really , what you would do in this case is a follow up with a "Threshold test", 30 min @15 km/h with lactate at 10 and 30 min, if dif is not more than 1 mmol/L increase, is good to go) However cant believe this guys (university) with the data post test, recommended 6.24 pace(15 km/h ish) wayyyy over possibilities or very optimist 14 km/h is the pace for Marcus, more conservative but more real with that data! My 2 cents
Cool! Also enjoying the podcast, actually a listener of the podcast and just realized you were on youtube also. Especially enjoyed the episodes with your coach.
Thanks for the support Duncan. I am now self coached, if you get the chance please listen to episode 141 where I talk an athlete I coached to a sub 3 marathon.
@@marcusruns9003 I actually listened to that episode already, excellent episode. It was interesting also to hear the two of you talk about your background. Also very much enjoyed episode 142.
Great episode with the masters! Great work with the 2 marathons in a week. Can’t believe… pretty incredible. Enjoy taper you certainly deserve it!!!
Thank you it is a great accomplishment! Some of my friends also ran Chicago today and have run 3 sub 3s in 3 weeks! It’s amazing stuff. But I’m enjoying the break! 😂
Well done Marcus! You tapered for 1 week?
Thanks! Moreso a recovery. A few days off then 30mins of easy running from Wednesday to Saturday.
Nice one!!!
Thank you!
Thank for sharing Marcus! How are the legs now after 2 marathons in 7 days?
Yeah the legs are absolutely fine thanks. It is just my immune system which has taken a double kicking! So hopefully the cold clears up soon!
@@marcusruns9003 hope it clears up soon!

Most in-depth and detailed shoe review I've ever seen. I've never seen someone go and do this before, and it's great so one can actually see how the body is reacting and the science in the shoes actually working and being explained how they work.
Thank you! We appreciate it. We were hoping to do something different, and it’s great to get this feedback.
@@marcusruns9003 It's so much better than seeing someone squeeze the shoe or twist it, then give an opinion about it based on that and first impression runs and then someone is always biased against one brand over another. Tbh I would love seeing a video or series like this where you are comparing like the Pro 3, Alphafly or AF2, Asics Meta's, you get my drift, so you can see hey this is top end super shoes and this is what the science is showing, and this is like daily trainers, trail/mountain running shoes, and so forth and this is what the science is showing and what your opinion is. I think it's great to see you give your feedback, and then he answers with the data and explains it back from his side of understanding in PT to you being the runner.
@@Pittimus84 yeah absolutely. That’s something we want to do to moving. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice shoq review
Thank you 🙏🏾
I have been curious as to you are training and using this hydration drink and this gel during training runs for a race. But what happens when that race isn't using what you use, and you don't have anyone who can crew you. Does one just stock up on gels and only take water or what.
Good question. So in the Sevilla Marathon earlier in 2022 they did not have maurten on the route, and I had no one to crew or pass me drinks. But I used a belt and carried several decathlon flexible flasks with the maurten 320 drink mix. So it can be done, but you have to carry it. And this is what I've done in training. The good thing about Berlin is they have the 160 drink mix on the course, and non elites also can have drink tables etc. So this time I won't have to carry all my fuel!
@@marcusruns9003 I was thinking about getting a smaller water bottle to carry on course from the start and when i'm done with it just dispose of it, and then gels will take me the rest. Now I am not doing 26.2, got a 10 miler and a half are my longest races left in the year, 10k i'm not concerned about. I do have soft flasks myself and they are awesome since I just shove them in my waist when empty, but I try to run as minimal as possible and carry nothing if I can, just make loops or out and backs and just use my car as the aid station. Maurten is good not the best on my stomach but it's my "2nd best" I'm glad it's sold here locally so if I am in a pinch I have access to something I know sits well on my stomach. I use First Endurance EFS-PRO, I sweat very heavily and the electrolyte levels are up in their product, and it's not ever given my stomach issues. You know I was told Maurten is what they had at Boston earlier in the year, is Maurten the drink at all the world majors?
@@Pittimus84 one thing to be mindful of with gels is keep moderate hydration, otherwise if you get dehydrated the gels can cause GI issues. But it’s practice that’s key. For Maurten I understand it’s Boston, Berlin but it’s not at all off them.
Top 👍🏾 bro’

Good luck with your final buildup! See you in Berlin 🙌🏾
Cool documentary. I am always curious how the lactate threshold test is being carried out and how the results can be used to assess the recommended marathon pace. My coach has made me run 4 different threshold tests without doing blood tests to check my HR in response to different paces. I wondered how much difference it would make to get the threshold pace without doing the blood test. Perhaps you might want to do a follow-up video to explain the differences to give the amateurs some perspectives. It's helpful to reassure that the lactate threshold pace can be improved through training. CANCEL
Thanks Sophia for watching. In regards to your question please have a look back at episode 2 where I ran a half marathon by heart rate at my target marathon pace effort, using my Coros watch (or similar) I targeted to stay in the aerobic power zone so a heart rate between 147-161 bpm. I’d use a chest monitor for better accuracy if possible. I appreciate I’ve watched this video a zillion times through editing haha 😂 at the end of this video I do mention that my race pace effort in episode 2 was 6.21 min/per mile whereas this test said 6.24. So my heart rate measure and the lactate threshold test were very close. But as I said if you run at the heart rate efforts that I noted earlier that will give you an indication of your marathon pace effort. However that point is not fixed, ie the more that you add to the various points of training ie base, and the two threshold levels it will shift things along.
@@marcusruns9003 I appreciate your kind response, as always :-) I will check out all the other episodes you produced, especially episode 2. Learned so much from you. Keep up your passionate work!
Great insight. Thanks for sharing and some good question

how did you shave off 1hr from the 1st marathon?
A combination of things that I won’t do justice to in this answer. So consistent structured training built over the years. Lots of base building miles, with faster effort work. A few backwards steps but kept trying and kept moving forward.
