Moto Guzzi 950 Raceco ex-racebike motor in 1975 s3 based special after a warm up ride cliff top ride
This is a VERY special MOTO GUZZI motor, No ordinary round barrel motor, not even an ordinary LeMans motor.
A few years ago I bought a complete Raceco UK prototype racebike, just to get this motor and I sold the rest of the bike!
For people like me who have been involved with Guzzis for decades, this would have been close to ultimate big block spec in the 80s, and was used in the prototype racebike after a special short stroke race motor blew up during testing.
This less radical motor has been going strong ever since.
I have never had to take it apart completely, but have had the sump and rocker covers off for routine servicing, so what I can say for sure is;
starting with a Spada 1000 crank case, it has
Gilardoni Nikasil cylinders,
high compression pistons,
lemans heads which have been ported and twin plugged,
Agostini timing gears,
A lightened and polished crank and lightened rods, all balanced.
Deep sump spacer.
A fast road/race cam which knowing when this was built, is likely to be a P3 or SS cam.
A very light 10 spring flywheel and ring gear from a Daytona.
Original Distributor still running points, but modified for less advance to account for the twin plugging. Of course this could easily be upgraded to any of the various after market electronic ignition systems.
The engine runs fully synthetic oil and has no leaks.
It starts very quickly and easily with the phm40s, once warm ticks over like a Swiss watch but best of all… this motor is incredible in that it will happily pull from low revs in any gear yet will happily keep pulling all the way to 9000rpm, though I tend to keep to a self imposed 8000 rpm rev’ limit.
It is very addictive, very forgiving, has great low down torque, yet will spit fire and howl like a loon when you thrash it.
And just listen to how perfect that carburation is, no hesitation, not cough or splutter or bog, I whack the throttle open as fast as I can and it just revs cleanly and the revs drop just as quickly with that very light Daytona clutch (flywheel and ring gear).

yesterday I was trying to set up my carbs with vacuum gauges on my race motor, after having stripped and cleaned the carbs over winter because they got water in them and after having stripped, cleaned out the tank and repainted it after that had water in it too, thanks to the bike being left out in the rain too many times.... I sync'd the carbs by eye and ear a couple of weeks ago and it ran ok...

I was using the S3 fairly often til September 2023, then I got water in the fuel tank. I'm not sure if it was from all the rain or from contaminated fuel at the petrol station, or from the ethanol in petrol now, even the e5 which I use, absorbing water... but however it got in there I had water in my float bowls and so the bike wouldn't start, i drained the fuel tank and found quite a bit of wa...

hi, the bike has been 100% reliable in the years i have had it except for normal wear, from use, i had to change the clutch friction plates which only cost about £70 and took about 2 minutes to swap over. and i had to put new brushes in the starter motor, the new brush kit was only about £25 but it was a hell of a job to get the starter motor off, a hell of a job to get it back together again with the new brushes installed and a hell of a job to refit the starter motor, horrible job but hopefully that will be it now for another 60,000 miles. absolutely love the bike.
