Hello!
My name is Jen and I live on a small piece of property in central Michigan with my husband, adult son, and lots of animals. It may be small, but we try to do as much as we can to be self sufficient.
This channel is about my personal journey as a homesteader, which includes many facets. Some of them are: Organic gardening, soap making, cooking vegetarian and vegan meals from scratch, and learning how to grow and use many medicinal herbs. You will find a plethora of different videos here, encompassing these different things.
My latest journey as of 1/01/2024 is my weight loss journey. So come along with me and may you be inspired.

We finally did it! We finally invested in some of these traps this year, and today was the day. After seeing some beetles on my crops I knew it was time to try this thing. I have two traps out. The more we catch, the less damage is fone to our crops this year, AND the less are reproduced for next year. Game on beetles!! 🪲 🪲 #organicgardening #organicpestcontrol

Praying for you
Our hearts and prayers are with you. Wishing you hope, health and easier days.♥🙏♥🙏
prayers..........with your health issues can you get ssi or ssa / do you have help with medical coverage since not much income / some MCO you can get help with food/utilities/meds/ etc each month......I am retired and have UHC duo and they provide this......also my disabled daughter can get this with her insurance
I don't qualify for SSI because I haven't been officially labeled as "disabled.""" We do have Medicaid for health insurance and get food assistance. As far as help with shelter, utilities and such, again, we don't qualify, and the programs around here run out of funds quickly. We do the best we can and lean on God to get us through. ❤️
My prayers are going out to you and your family. These days are getting worse with people and jobs. Know that God is with you and his protection surrounds those that know him. Psalm 34:17-18 Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand". Psalm 46:10: "Be still and know that I am with you". What helps me with my stress is keeping my hands busy and singing hymns praises to Him and a long talk with God getting things off my heart. Try looking into fermentation, vegan recipes, herbal remedies, hair care, sewing, art...
I have this exact model but can't for the life of me figure out how to take the drip tray out to empty it. We're you able to figure out how to empty it??
You pull out the bottom section, then there is two tabs that stick up. You gently push the towards each other as you lift out the tray. Let me know if this helps! 😁
I’m celiac and on a strict gluten free diet, I also have fibromyalgia. A gluten free diet hasn’t made any difference to my daily fibromyalgia pain. I’m not saying other fibromyalgia patient wouldn’t benefit by going gluten free. I think sugar is my problem, and I find gluten free processed foods are loaded with sugar, I’m starting a Ketogenic diet today. Thank you for this video, I really enjoyed it.
Sugar and oils are huge contributing factors. I do a whole food diet, and make many of my own gluten-free foods. So that's helpful. I hope you start feeling better.
Great thanks for your help I’m doing lots of what you say Maureen xx
I hope ot helps you friend!
I love your smile and determination. Keep up the hard fight🥊! We're all cheering for you. 💌

You’ve got this! Keep it up!
Hi Jen. That was quite a full garden. Like your trellis idea. To stop the squirrels I used a mini version of trellises for my carrots. They still tried to dig under them so I added stones in the gaps. The carrots are growing now! 👍I was thinking of leaving my marigolds in the ground all winter as a cover but wondered if they would go moldy and ruin the ground for next year. What do you use for a cover crop?
Moldy crops that are breaking down won't hurt the soil. I leave a lot of my plants in the ground until spring. It provides a haven for insects and tiny creatures to dwell in the fall/winter/early spring. I don't really clean out my gardens until the following year. I don't currently grow cover crops. But if I did, it would be buckwheat. I'm thinking about doing this with this raised bed as a test run.
Hi Jen. Really enjoyed the tour. The weather!!!! Battling late blight in the tomatoes leaves and stems. It got a few of the fruit so I gave away a lot of green tomatoes to a lady who likes them fried. But we still have an awesome harvest. Was hoping to have the same kind of showing of marigolds but mine were very small this year... Except one (which was supposed to be a dwarf according to the package! 🤔) one pepper plant was very odd, not sure if maybe it's blight? The peppers went mushy one after the other. 😮 Had a lot of black eyed Susan's popping up everywhere😊. It's so nice when all you have to do is trim. Wish a peach tree would work here. Too cold I think. Need to get an arborist to treat the pear trees in the spring for disease. Should get fruit this coming year😊. Blessings from Canada🙏🇨🇦
Beautiful tour. My Michigan backyard is somewhat overgrown right now too, because we are so busy with our Michigan Renaissance Festival shop. It's my own little eco-system. :)
Your tomatoes are wonderful!
For some reason, they get more aggressive in late summer, early Fall. I leave them alone until i get stung, and then it is game on.
Probably because they are trying to get ready for winter and they don't have time to spare. 🤷🏼♀️. I get grumpy when I am pressed for time too. 😂😂 But I completely get it. I have had to eradicate a few nests myself because they were a threat. But. If they are where they aren't bothering anyone, I try and let them alone.
I was stung twice by either yellow jackets or hornets earlier in July and their stings left tiny holes in my skin. 😮
I'm so sorry. 😩
Oh wow. I've left paper wasps alone in the shed before but I'm not keen on the yellow jackets. They stung me at work outside near the garbage once. Wasn't even near them. So yellow jackets are a no go for me. Be safe❤😊
Yeah, the garbage is a hot spot. They are defending food. We used to deal with them at the farmer's market all the time. Between sweets and the produce, and the beeswax from bee keepers, they were looking for a meal. But as long as you left them alone, and didn't panic, they generally didn't cause harm. They were just annoying.
Wow. Praise the Lord! Good is so good! He gives abundantly. I wish everyone knew that they could have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ His Son. That's an impressive amount of berries. ❤️👍🙏🇨🇦😊
Amen!!
I have never heard anyone pronounce Roots the way she does
Thanks for noticing my accent! Have a blessed day!
You, my Sister Jen, are beautiful and an inspiration to ALL of us. God be with you on this journey. HE alone can get you through it. And you’ll be better prepared for heaven because of it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Amen!!
Hey Jen. Good to see you on again. Sorry that you are not feeling well. Please Lord heal our dear sister, give her the strength that she needs to persevere through the hard days. Give her the peace that only you can give. Thank you Lord, we give you all the praise and the glory. Amen.❤🙏😊🇨🇦
This is beautiful 😍
No notification! 🤔 I don't normally scroll but today I did. Looking good in spite of the blight.
Praying for you to get an adequate diagnosis that makes sense. I know the struggle is real. Take care and keep moving on at a pace you can do.
It wasn't that long ago you were training for that race. It's hard to believe how fast this happened. Praying the Lord heals you and gives you strength. ❤️🙏🇨🇦
Indeed. 😭
I will be praying for you! Be careful and take care of yourself. Hope they find out what is wrong!❤
Hi Jen. I sure hope they find out more of what's going on and ways to help you. It is obvious how much you've struggled even since I started following you last summer. God bless you and your family!
Thank you and God bless! 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you I am in the midst of learning this journey right now with my soaked Kidney beans and pinto beans 🤦🏼♀️ I soaked them last night thinking 2 cups per pint! Now I have 5 lbs of eh to do tonight 😢 lol 😂1st batch in the pressure canner! You gave a through video! Great job 👍🏻
Glad to be of assistance. 😊❤️
I find 1\2 cup dry beans per pint. If you soak them I then have about 1 cup per pint after soaking. I fill the rest with water. Filling to the 1 inch mark. I soak my beans with a pinch of baking soda and rinse well before filling the jars. I prefer to fill the jars about 3\4 full leaving more room for water. The beans will continue to absorb water while cooking.
No need to soak them they expand in the WB
I show both dry and soaked methods, so people can see the difference and choose what works best for them. 😊
@@GardenJensJourney ok
I canned my dry beans like this: I put a cup of dried beans in a quart jar filled it with hot water and 1/2 tsp of salt then I finger tightened it and WB it for three hours
I am glad this method works for you. I do not recommend WB processing for beans because the temperature doesn't get high enough to kill the bacteria that can cause botulism. I also show both methods, so people could see the difference. 😊
Hot water and soap also will work.
Hot water and soap? Explain?
"The Lord's Garden"... I love that! 💕 I have always, jokingly, called my garden a 'Darwin Garden', lol, but now I'm gonna change it to the 'Lord's'.
It is God's garden first and foremost. He just gave me the task of tending and keeping it. 😊
@@GardenJensJourney agreed! He created the first one and the miracle continues today...
Great video and info, could u make a tincture from willow bark?
Yes. I have done that. Fill ar jar 3/4 full of the bark, then fill it with 80-100 proof Vodka. Let it steep 6 weeks before using.
You got a lot going on in there😊. Every day I've had to take off bad leaves because last year blight and powdery mildew and disease on the roses and pears destroyed a lot.... Tomatoes, peas too. The heat seeds to be helping stop the powdery mildew but still had to thin out the flowers. I'm finding that only some of the beans types area susceptible to disease in their leaves. Maybe the Japanese beetles are spreading disease? Anyway everything here is growing well, producing a lot. So in very pleased with this year's crop. God has blessed us with more than I thought we would have. Have a great day. ❤️🙏😊🇨🇦
Thank you for the tutorial. This is exactly what I was looking for. I just wish I could send you some of the fruit that I’m gonna be able to grow now because of this.
Hey Jenn.i didn't get this notification. So I checked my list. And here you are😊 wow lovely flowers. Yeah I found that the borage was very effective against vine borers. I'm amazed you still have beans from last year. Are they frozen? Canned? Blessings from Ontario Canada.
They are canned beans. My family doesn't tend to eat a lot of green beans, so they last awhile. 😂😂
Do you pick through and wash the beans first? Also, isn’t it necessary to clean the rims first or, not necessarily for beans? Thank you ❤
I do rinse my beans usually and pick through them if I see a rock or a bad bean. But I'm not overly cautious. The rims have already been washed, just like the jars.
Great video! I am going to SUBSCRIBE right now😊🌱
Thank you for your support! Glad you liked the video!
@@GardenJensJourney I plan to collect some willow bark this weekend.😊 I just got done collecting some pine pitch.🌲
So interesting. Thanks. Had someone ask me if I had any wild lettuce. Had no idea. Now I know what to look for😊👍
You're welcome. 😊

Hang in there Jen, you're not alone.
I keep my cell phone on me all the time. Even if I have to use the bathroom. I don't know what might happen at any time, but I only hope that I can call emergency services.
