LP Supercells and Tornadoes in Central Oklahoma - May 11, 2023
On the morning of May 11, the Storm Prediction Center had issued an Enhanced Risk (3/5) for severe weather, including a 10% hatched risk for tornadoes, indicating the possibility of significant tornadoes, that encompassed much of central Oklahoma.
Though a cluster of storms across southern Oklahoma earlier that morning introduced uncertainty with the day's severe threat, quick southerly return flow resulted in ample moisture and instability across much of the southern and central part of the state east of the dryline as a surface low deepened and traversed further NW of the state.
Considering the lack of low-level storm relative flow leading to smaller updraft widths, along with dry air aloft lowering realized instability, a low-precipitation (LP) supercell developed along the dryline SW of Lawton by mid afternoon. The sole focus of convection in the immediate area with excellent visibility, this LP supercell provided an incredible display of structure before quickly dying out.
Feeling defeated amidst the chaser convergence-induced traffic in rural Stephens County, we determined that our only option was to head north on US-81 towards some messy, unorganized convection just south of Chickasha. Though one of the storms organized into a supercell with clear yet broad rotation, we stopped near Rush Springs to check out the view--much to the bewilderment of the cattle that had been grazing in the open meadows nearby.
As we returned to US-81 and admired the supercell's mesocyclone, rotation quickly tightened, triggering NWS Norman to issue a Tornado Warning as we scrambled north before turning east near Ninnekah. While we might not have seen a tornado, we were met by an incredible rainbow display to distract ourselves with. Continuing east and weaving through rural county roads, we questioned whether or not to drop south towards a newly developed supercell that appeared to be strengthening. After spending some time in a sticky situation that nearly left our vehicle in a ditch, though, we elected to continue north and east.
That decision soon paid off as I witnessed my very first tornado near Cole. Driving through tornado damage from just a few weeks prior around Cole, we witnessed the tornado fully condense onto the ground closer to Goldsby underneath a mean-looking mesocyclone.
While Norman continued to be barraged by tornado sirens as we headed back after sunset, the tornado thankfully dissipated before reaching city limits. As the last week of the semester wound down, it was quite the fitting and unforgettable ending for a year in Oklahoma.

Afternoon Thunderstorms in Norman, OK - August 29th & Sept. 1
มุมมอง 187ปีที่แล้ว
Amid a severe late summer drought, the end of August marked a brief return of thunderstorms and much-needed rain across central Oklahoma. Though it resulted in some localized flooding, the sight of rain and lightning was a nice start to the fall semester. Early Morning Storms and Flash Flooding - December 13, 2022
มุมมอง 125ปีที่แล้ว
Early in the morning on December 13, a QLCS tracked through central and southern Oklahoma, bringing with it plenty of lightning, wind, and flash flooding. Only 20 miles south of Norman in the town of Wayne, OK, an EF-2 occurred, and numerous tornado warnings were issued. In Norman, meanwhile, flash flooding turned Jenkins Avenue into a river, as high waters stalled two vehicles that didn't make...
Strong Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds - October 15, 2022
มุมมอง 2.6Kปีที่แล้ว
On the night of October 15, a nocturnal mesoscale convective system (MCS) tracked southward over central Oklahoma, bringing strong winds that blew dust along its gust front. On the back side of the storms, frequent upward and anvil crawler lightning made for an amazing light show. Lightning Show Over Central Oklahoma - August 28, 2022
มุมมอง 3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After being met with scorching hot, dry conditions during my first couple weeks in Oklahoma, I finally witnessed storms on August 28th. Beginning with an isolated severe storm northeast of Norman that brought some strong winds and CG lightning, new storms began brewing in north central Oklahoma through the afternoon, gradually progressing southward as they developed. By nightfall, the resulting...
Driving Under Thunderstorms at Night - August 8, 2022

On day one of our 900-mile journey from home, we were met with summertime storms over southwestern Missouri after sunset, which made for an incredible lightshow to end a long, tiring day of driving. 'Highway to Hell' and Pecos Hank's entire playlist really fit the mood that night. Shot with my Nikon D5600. Edited using DaVinci Resolve 18. Fierce CG Bolts and Strong Winds: July 5-6, 2022
มุมมอง 5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
An isolated supercell produced copious amounts of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning on July 5 near Cincinnati, OH. The following day, a QLCS brought strong, severe winds amid an environment characterized by high DCAPE and moderate shear. In fact, a peak 67 MPH wind gust was recorded at Lunken Airport to my west. Following the storm, I discovered widespread tree damage throughout Anderson Township,...
Sweltering Heat Wave and Storms: June 13-14, 2022
มุมมอง 42K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Amid a week of stifling heat and humidity across the Ohio Valley in early-mid June, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) brought some much needed relief from the heat. Yet, due to the copious amount of instability made possible by this heat and humidity, these explosive storms brought more than just rainfall and cooler temperatures. In total, over 200,000 customers lost power in the Cincinnati a...
Impressive Lightning, Wind, and Hail - May 19 & 21, 2022

A pleasant ending to the day, the remnant of a supercell produces impressive lightning and thunder, including one of my best lightning captures ever, before a fast-moving bowing segment brings strong winds and additional lightning on May 19, 2022 near Cincinnati, OH. Two days later, organized storms produce pea-sized hail, the first time I'd seen hail in two years following a relatively mild ye...

Distant Nighttime Thunderstorms - August 12, 2021
มุมมอง 2.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A rather typical occurrence during the summer, the beauty of the single-celled pulse storms here lie in their timing. Usually short-lived and comparatively weak to organized thunderstorms, pulse storms often occur in a diurnal cycle developing through the day and dissipating as the sun sets, choking off its main source of forcing. Yet even as light waned in this weakly forced environment, pulse...

Ich habe noch ni so eine wolke gesehen!!
Do you have full vid??
Interesting and informative video. Very cool tornado. Thumb up!
It's really cool how you can see the blue glow at the ends of the leaders in some of the slow motion shots, I haven't seen that in a lot of other videos
Yeah I also found that really fascinating. Not a lightning physics expert but after some digging I think my camera might've been sensitive enough to capture the glow from "corona brushes" at the ends of leaders. Not sure why this night was the only time I've ever really been able to capture them.
Amazing video and shots, it's cool to see a storm chase on this channel
Thanks! Finally had the chance to go a few times this year. Should have another chase video coming up when I have the time to look through all the footage.
@@jacobwx4313 Looking forward to it!
Thanks for the upload. I enjoyed imagining the heat you were experiencing and the shots of the trees under blue skies almost as much as the shelf cloud.

Хорошая погода. Снега маловато, а так ничего. Пурга может дуть день или три. Редко, когда два дня.Почему, не знаю
I love supercell storm!
Enorme🙏🏼
Mesoscale convective systems are dangerous
Wild how people just drive through the flooded roads like that
The music is annoying.

É uma nuvem de "tromba d'água". Seguida de tempestade elétrica. Já presenciei várias. No Brasil são frequentes.
That was some amazing lightning near the end
Nice video! Also what speed settings and stuff did you use on davinci?
Just Amazing Sounds Of Thunder And Beautiful Lighting Flashing # a beautiful thunderstorm✌👍🏿⭐⭐
GEE WHIZ that shelf cloud was unearthly!
Я думал это цунами
That was a wicked shelf! Love how wispy it looked and how quickly it was moving.
That was certainly a sight not seen every day. First appearing more resembing an infection or invasion on Sci Fi channel. Looked like some mammatus clouds had formed within after shelf cloud passed. Really awesome looking but lightning and thunder were the show. Intense. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful clouds!
Very good
0:27-0:31 is it just me, or did the clouds look like the shockwave of an explosion lol, the way the trees shake from the wind right after makes it look more convincing.
Was the dramatic music necessary?

I live in North Central Indiana. I'm not sure we had any "really good" thunderstorms this year. I always enjoy the BIG BOOMERS at night, but maybe I slept through all of them! Good Job!
Absolutely PERFECT! The traffic, the storm, the music. It was real and really pleasant to watch. Well done!
Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
