Most videos are from my O-gauge railroad layout modeled after Harpers Ferry, WVa. I chose that location since its one of my favorite places to railfan. Its located at the convergence of two rivers with a tunnel through Maryland Heights. At different points of history there have been as many as 3 rail bridges crossing the Potomac river.
MTH PS3 Blue Comet unboxing & run
Unboxing and run of a nused 2011 MTH PS3 equipped Blue Comet Pacific 4-6-2 steam locomotive. The engine is in perfect working order and looks great. This model will replace a PS1 (upgraded to PS2) Blue Comet model I already have. Yeah, its not prototypical of the Potomac river valley but everyone should own a Blue Comet.

I already had an older TMCC Chesapeake and Ohio #1521 version of this engine that I got used for around $700 So are the new Legacy sound features and details worth the extra $$$$? Video of my Amtrak train ride to NYC to see a show. Normally we drive but I'm glad we opted to take the train. It was faster and way more relaxing. Cost about the same when you factor in gas, tolls and parking. Even though it was not an Acela (saw some of the new ones on the way back) I was impressed by the high speed sections of the route. PS: Yes, some scenes include my new set of MTH NE corr...

The #605 has been upgraded to PS3. The 611 is one of my favorite steam engines. The 2004 models were made in Korea and are significantly more detailed that pre 2000 models. Beautiful Blue Comet Ken.
Awesome video 😊
Nice addition! I have one of these MTH Pacifics in the B&O blue from the more recent release and its easily the best smoking engine in the fleet! Look forward to more layout updates!
Thats a gorgeous engine and you have a beautiful layout so far
Beautiful engine, Ken!!
Railroad is looking good Ken.
Well done Ken! That's an amazing Blue Comet, and it is an excellent addition to your collection! 👍👍
The PS3 version is definitely nicer than my PS1 version. AND I got it for a price equal to or less than what I can sell the PS1 (upgraded to PS2).
Is it cheaper to buy it off of ebay?
Depends on the condition...
I've got a few engines from eBay and from Trainz in the past year. Buy it now prices on EBay are usually high and typically are the price the seller wants for the item. I've won some eBay auctions by bidding late at my max bid amount. I have gotten some good deals using that technique. Trainz on the other hand will lower the price of items periodically. Trick there is you need to know what a good price is and be willing to risk missing an item if someone else buys it before you.
I don't know if I can afford them.
@@RonnyTheEngineer There is a very nice TMCC Lionel scale B&O Pacific on Trainz right now for just $550
@@99thObsidian I'm sorry. That's more than what I could afford.
That engine is stunning Is the tooling the same as the PS 1 version? That's a score Chasing every new feature will make you homeless
Willam, I think the PS3 model IS a new tooling. The detail of the wheel spokes and some of the air compressors seems finer. Handrails and ladders are finer as well. Its a great model and I appreciate your comment. I'll be doing a side by side comparison of a PS1, PS2, this PS3 and a Lionel Pacific in the near future. Stay tuned.
@@99thObsidian I will The Pacific is such a classy engine regardless of the roadname
THAT IS A REAL NICE PIECE YOU PICKED UP KEN. CONGRATS AND GOOD LUCK WITH IT. 🙂😉👍👍 I RECENTLY PURCHASED 2 LEGACY FEF-3s, THE 844 AND 836. I ALREADY MADE AN UNBOXING VID OF THE 844, THE 836 WILL BE UNBOXED EITHER TODAY OR TOMORROW. I HOPE YOU WILL TUNE IN TO THE VID. PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. 🙂🙂
Thanks man. Subbed your channel today. DUDE, you got guts taking your woman to Trainworld. My wife be like "You got another box from UPS"
I've always loved the Blue Comet. My father had a prewar standard gauge Lionel Blue Comet and when I was a child, I received a Lionel MPC Blue Comet set which I loved. I really do like MTH's PS3, the sounds seem to be 'more alive' compared with PS2 which is still excellent. You've got a beautiful set there. As for the dust on that "new" old engine, get a new, soft bristle paint brush and that will help clean around all of those details, nooks and crannies.
Congrats, Ken! The Blue Comet is one of my all-time favorites! Pacific's are some of my favorites, too. We've had the PS1 model since I was a kid and eventually got the PS2 model for the extra add-on details and better features. It's such a beautiful locomotive! Enjoy!! - Ryan
Ryan, thanks. The Blue Comet was our first MTH RTR set in 2002. My son picked it out in the catalog. I've since upgraded just like you to newer versions for sound and detail. Before I sell my PS1 (upgraded to 2) Blue Comet I'll do a comparison video.
Really great addition. I'm sure almost everyone would love to have one like this.
I'll be selling the PS1 (upgraded to 2) version I have soon. Let me know if you know someone who may be interested. Would love for it to go to a good home.
That engines kinda spiffy! ❤ 😮 😊
I agree! It's simply a beautiful steam engine. It must have been a sight back in the day. With most trains being black, brown this paint scheme really shines. I love the gold pinstriping too.
Ken. he~y Love it~very interesting ,goodnight,
Me likem your Trump Hat.
The bridge. It looks pretty spiffy! 😊 🫡
Bridge looks great Ken.
Great addition to the layout, it's going to look fantastic.
I agree. It helps too that I got it for about 1/3rd retail. Next challenge is to scenic the pylon lifts to resemble stone put vegetation at the base. The plan is to paint entire river floor like this: th-cam.com/users/shorts-UY5sBcfbLY?si=Vk1eV2zWudbIFs0
@@99thObsidian Should look great.
GREAT VIDEO KEN. YOU BETTER START WEARIN SHOES SO YOU HAVE A SCREW OR NAIL GO IN YOUR FOOT. SEE YA IN THE NEXT VIDEO. 😵💫🙂
Keen eye! I normally do wear shoes in the train room. Discovered the hard way that the little metal Atlas rail joiners hurt like hell when you step on them😲 Was super excited to unbox and setup the bridge (first wife-recommended layout purchase 🤣). Super appreciate your comment. I should have the inner loop running by the next video.
Love the viaduct! I didn't know the FasTrack was replaceable, and it comes with a very nice base. 👍 - Ryan
Yes, I read somewhere that you could remove the Fastrack. Not easily though. Its held down with like 8 screws. I love the ppl on the base and will try to move them onto my finished river floor. Not too much of a fan of how they did the base water.
Looks awesome! Can’t wait to see it weathered
You and me both!
Beautiful model! I have a Lionel TMCC model awaiting a Legacy upgrade. I have quite a few memories of being with my father back in the 1980's and one particular Saturday morning around 6AM when the #611 was being pulled backwards from Roanoke to the Southern shops in Birmingham for restoration back to service. I remember being surprised that the eccentric cranks were laid out on a flatcar as this locomotive (pulled by a diesel of course) was moving quite fast through Jonesborough, Tennessee.
The first time I saw 611 was at the museum in Roanoke. I happen to be in town for a conference and had some free time. I was blown away by the sheer size of the engine. When we built our first layout my son requested a Railking model. It was our first MTH DCS equipped engine. I later bought our first Premier model of the 611. That was also my first PS1 to PS2 upgrade conversion. Seeing the 611 in person in Manassas VA was probably my fondest experience. Looking up from my camera to see those HUGE drivers roll by was a true thrill.
These Lionel Artisan Collection accessories really do add scale detail and realism to a layout. I wish I had room for such accessories.
I have yet to explore the full line of Artisan structures. In part because they are large (& heavy - cost lots to ship), I suspect they didnt sell well. I got this bridge for about 1/3 retail.
Looking good! I like it! 👍👍
Thanks dude. The plan was always to replace the MTH bridge. I just happen upon the Rockville bridge when researching regional bridges.
Nice! What curve radiuses are you running?
Hi John, welcome aboard! The minimum curve on the outer loop is O-72. This video was taken just before I expanded my layout. The min is still 72 but the max outer is 108. Goal of this layout was to go as big as possible curves yet still run a folded dogbone config. See vid of expansion with plan here: th-cam.com/video/api1wDtV0pE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=O_xypuY7F1dbMbYI
Way to go Ken! Keep it up!
Thanks! Will do!
The front of the 2-6-6-2 looks like the UP 9000 4-12-2 class
Congratulations
Looks good ken , keep having fun !
Yes, fun is the reward for hours of work. I enjoy sharing with my channel subscribers. Once scenery is to a presentable level then I hope to invite some of the neighbors kids to come see a running session. Thanks for the positive comment.
Glad I found your post. You have given me more ideas with the pink foam. TY

@@MarkWick Mark, I super appreciate your kind words and subscription. Welcome aboard, I assure you you’ll enjoy the journey. Now that I have 1k subs TH-cam wants me to have twice as many ‘watch hours’. Guess that means I’ll be shooting more vids. I’ve made lots of ‘grief’ train purchases over the last year that I need to review & run. So stay tuned.
Absolutely fantastic. Having been to most of these places and can see them come alive on your layout.
Thanks for the comment. One goal of this layout was to model some real RR locations in O scale. Hard to do at scale within the confines of a basement. So I'm taking 'artistic license' in my interpretation of locales. I live in Leesburg, VA which is less than an hour from most of my layout scenes (except for Cumberland). I ride my bike along the C&O canal trail which parallels parts of the B&O mainline. So I have lots of prototypical inspiration for scenery. I hope to do well enough to get my layout into a model train magazine some day.
@@99thObsidian I hope so too.
Awesomeness and Congrats Ken!
Very nice! Your expansion is coming along quite nicely. I like the 108" curves. They make the big units look good, for sure. My new, upper level, planned for the middle of next year, will be a mix of O108 and O120. Gargraves offers them in their tinplate line of track, so I can run my post-war units with MagneTraction. The outer main on my layout is a mix of O72 and O96. Keep up the great updates. We all look forward to each one.
@@johnandrus3901 One goal of overall goals of this layout was to use the largest curves possible. When I got into hobby I ran sub scale Railking. When I graduated to scale Premier and realized they look more realistic on bigger curves. Thanks for your comment. Next vid features a new stone bridge.

Congratulations on reaching 1k🎉 🎉
Great project Your attention to detail is admirable. You have a lot of discipline I am all over the place UP, NYC, PRR C&O, CSX SP
Well... if I was truly disciplined then I'd not only just run B&O, C&O, Chessie & WM but I'd only run steam to diesel timeframe. While I collect primarily VA RR like C&O, Virginian, N&W, I do have a Blue Comet and NYC 20th Century Limited. I've seen a wide variety of modern diesels run through Harpers Ferry from CSX, UP to CN. I like steam since we don't get to see the prototypes anymore. One goal of the layout was to model actual places along the B&O.
Congratulations on 1K subs Ken!
Congrats on 1K subs Ken 👏 The backdrop is looking great 👍 Lookimg forward to the layout progress! - Ryan
