Deep Nature Connection: Caring for nature in crisis
‘We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see. Or hear. Or sense’ - Louv.
Nature needs us more than ever - and we need nature. As we face the increasing biodiversity crisis fuelled by environmental destruction and climate change, deepening our connection with nature is vital. By deepening our understanding of nature, we can better protect it.
How do we encourage more people to connect with nature? How do we inspire people to care? And how does this relate to private land conservation and restoration efforts across Victoria and Australia more broadly?
The 2024 John Paul Memorial Lecture, presented by Trust for Nature, features three experts whose work focuses on human-nature connection: Lily van Eeden, Claire Dunn and Fiona Murdoch.
The John Paul Memorial Lecture is made possible thanks to the continued support and generosity of the Paul Family Foundation.

Homes for wildlife forever

More than 1,500 Victorians have volunteered to legally protect the plants and animals on their properties with conservation covenants through Trust for Nature, thus giving wildlife forever homes. They are true conservation heroes and part of a global movement that recognises that national and state parks just aren’t enough to prevent species extinction. This is why we need to protect private land.

Remarkable changes on Neds Corner Station

When Trust for Nature bought 30,000 ha Neds Corner Station on Ngintait Country in 2002, much of it was a barren dust bowl, logged for timber and overgrazed by livestock and rabbits. Sorry you just shut me out again, like you have done with Fences. Where I live all the fences have been removed from our Public Land . We Respect that and know it is Parks. But the Foxes , Cats& Rabbits are still there. Because I control these same vermin on an adjoining property. Cheers Trev

You have fenced out normal people from traditional lifestyles .The fences you people erected stopped normal peoples access to water frontages. Which as far as I am concerned is illegal. Campsites that used to be available are now fenced off. Put a unlocked gate in place then we will have River access. It has nothing to do with Rabbit Control. It has got a look & feeling of Communism .Wake up Australia.

Hey Trevor, It sounds like you're more concerned about the politics rather than the conservation TrustForNature does. Just a reminder that TrustFornature is an entirely voluntary agreement that landowners make to allow the organisation to conduct necessary conservation work. What this does is ensures the protection of native vegetation and animal populations. Just imagine if you owned 10 hectares of bush and year by year you saw less kangaroos, less koalas, less lyre birds and then a bushfire rips through your property and destroys everything. If you had a heart, you'd miss all the animals that makes Australia, Australia. People are realising that their land's biodiversity is degrading or they want to preemptively protect their land. Don't forget, landowners have a say in whether their land is to become legally protected or not. There's this thing called the "Three Pillars of Sustainability" right, the three pillars being society, economics and the environment, and the mantra is if any of these pillars is out of balance, the rest collapses. For example, in Africa, there are conservation practices to increase the elephant population, however, now that the population has grown, these elephants stumble into villages and farms, destroying homes and crops which then the natives have to pay money to re-seed their crops and build their homes again. If Australia was to go all out on the economy, we would be mining the heck out of our country, exporting tons of gas, coal, uranium, livestock, etc; which would then lead to a massive decrease in the quality of the environment as habitats would become destroyed, animals displaced and rivers polluted with contaminants. Our environment would collapse, society would be restricted in fresh drinking water, crop quantity would decrease as well as our food quality which would then in-turn damage the economy. See where this is going? (In a loop, snowballing effect) You see that all of these pillars must be in balance in order for us to sustainably develop our country and so TrustForNature is a necessary thing to protect our beautiful environment and our unique flora and fauna. 61% of Victorian land is privately owned so the majority of Victoria's land cannot be protected by national parks and 80% of private land has been cleared for various reasons, therefore we need an environmental conservation organisation to protect the delicate ecosystems on private land. This is not an act towards communism, if it really was, the government would be forcing the acquisition upon the landowners, claiming it was for the good of the people. I believe you need to broaden your perspective. If you want access to a river or creek, just ask, if they don't give you a reasonable answer backed up by concrete evidence, take legal action if you want to.

collect the plastic rings from gallons of milk. Don't use 2 liters or 20 oz ones, they are too small. You can use the ones that are like a pull tab or cut the circle ones so there is a break in it. When you have about 10, leave them in a bowl in the cage for at least a week. maybe put treats in the bowl to encourage him to poke around. Eventually, he will try to carry them.
