Grafting My White Sapote
12-15-24
Post office delivered my white sapote scions today (Sunday)! The package has been in the mail for a couple of weeks so I wanted to go ahead and get the scions grafted. I ordered one scion each of the varieties 'Lemon Gold' and 'Delta Gold' from Marta at reallygoodplants.com. Each of these scions are large enough for a few (2-3) grafts plus they sent me an extra shorter scions of the 'Lemon Gold'. I probably could have gotten 7+ grafts, but I used larger pieces and got five grafts. They were sold out of the varieties I really wanted especially 'Rainbow' but maybe I can get it next year. Fingers crossed that these grafts take.

Grafting Ponkan Mandarin
มุมมอง 140หลายเดือนก่อน
I made this video on Nov 4, 2024 and here I am 5 days later and just now posting it. I am showing my latest greenhouse experiment which is grafting Ponkan mandarin, or at least attempting to do so. I had trimmed the ends of of a couple little branches and decided this would be better than just trashing them. I never did graft the third cutting, but rather stuck it in an attempt to get it to roo...

Congrats on getting hold of some white sapote scions, hopefully, all of your grafts are successful 🤞 I recently managed to get hold of a grafted McDill white sapote tree, and next year I'm going to see if I can graft it onto some of my seedling trees.
Reallygoodplants.com has a decent selection, but not sure if they ship across the pond.
@ yeah, I had a quick look earlier after I watched your video, seems like they don’t ship outside of the States, unfortunately. They also have some avocado scions too, which wouldn’t have minded.
@@PeterEntwistleyep! I was interested in some of the mulberry varieties also. Too bad I can't afford to get everything I want at once.
Nice man, cool set up for sure. God bless you brother in Jesus mighty name!!!
Thank you and God bless you also!
Also works for mulberry cuttings too
You are correct! I have used the sand before as well as various mixes with potting soil and other components such as peat and/or coco coir. My main personal reason for using the perlite over sand is that it is more lightweight and I have been able to transfer the cuttings out of it with less stress and tearing of the new roots. This of course is just my take on it. I do appreciate your input as others who may see this may see sand as a cheaper, more readily available substrate to use.
@stephendunn4942 Yes, indeed remember people from all over the world watch your channel. Here in Barbados, perlite is kinda expensive. Plus, at one time, there was a shortage on island we couldn't get any from all of the gardening centers.
@@geriannroth449 And that is why my title included the words, "How I root......". People in different areas of the world, and even in different areas here in the U.S. have to adapt to what they have available. I'm glad to have connected to you in Barbados! It is awesome how the internet can help connect those like us with mutual interest. Do you have quite a bit of fruit trees? What is your favorite?
Nice but normal building sand works great too. Just lay the cuttings horizontally on the surface of the sand and just lightning press the bottom end just under the surface and wait & monitor the root formation. Try it just replace the damp perlite with damp sand.😊😊
Very cool. Mango is my first purchased pawpaw "variety" from burnt ridge I believe. I have recently grafted some sunflower scions. Hooefuly they open up soon. They are in my grow room.
@@LoganShelton-rh3lp Good luck on your grafts!
God, Bless thank you for your video, I received a brugsmansia cutting off ebay, and this is it's first frost, i am hoping i don't underwater it or overwater it like i did my passion fruit vine, still working on growing them, but it isn't hardwood yet,I just hope they make it.

@@НатальяПлескач-й5ч Thank you!😊
Which variety of white sapote do you own??
They are grown from seed so not a particular variety, but the seed was from Suebelle. Hope to graft known varieties on them at some point.
Good job with the grafts Stephen, I hope they work out 🤞. I like that you grafted onto the rooted trifoliate rootstocks too, that's something I want to try again, mine failed last time, but I used a different grafting technique.
Thank you very much! Hopefully they take! 😊
I recently seen that technique demonstrated by Madison citrus nurserym I think it's genius.
That is where I saw it also! Hopefully it works for me. I may try it on other species of tree as well. I grafted a pawpaw this year with the method of cutting off the top and doing a cleft graft. The scion died and it seems that the rootstock also died. This may be my answer to that.
The calamondin peel is sweet I enjoy mine daily.
I love it!
Love that cactus. Im going to find one. I never thought about ordering some big perlite. I can only get the little bags from home Depot and thats not cost effective . Fortunately pine bark mulch is abundant and very cheap. Do you have thermometers in your greenhouse?
I do not currently have thermometers in th we greenhouse. I knocked the previous one off the wall and broke it. It is considerably cheaper to order the perlite on Amazon. I do not get paid to promote Amazon, but in the interest of helping others, here is a link to what I get; www.amazon.com/PVP-Industries-PVP105408-120-Quarts/dp/B07S4FTPYB/ref=asc_df_B07S4FTPYB/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18313621767532257438&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027064&hvtargid=pla-2281435182858&psc=1&mcid=4009c6ae2e3432b295a5a4598beb17b0&hvocijid=18313621767532257438-B07S4FTPYB-&hvexpln=73

Oh and I found a "rat tail cactus" on Amazon they have very large red flowers. Beautiful plant. Already ordered it. I'm running out of things to collect that are manageable size so I have recently gotten into cactus and bonsai.

How many days do you think it took before you took the air layer?
I believe it was 78 days. I started the air layer on 8/4/24. I probably could have taken it sooner, but I like to let it get plenty of roots.

Right?!?😊
You might be able to use it in an herbal tea. Yours looks pretty wild form, I have seen more tidy looking individuals.
To me, the form they take seems to depend on the way you make through trimming, etc.
@@stephendunn4942 maybe so, but you should see the ones by the rec center, will have to take pix, going on memory.
Liked your Dutch bucket videos so subbed. Not much of a grower but am in N Texas so want to watch your projects. Cheers!
Thank you!
Great job, Stephen! It's the first time I've seen a white sapote successfully air-layered on TH-cam. Looks like a great way to get some more plants to graft onto 👍
@peterentwistle Thank you! I hadn't really looked for other videos on the subject, but I figured it should work. Now the hardest part may be actually getting some scions of good varieties to graft on it. Not sure if I want to try something like a cleft graft or a bud graft. I guess mor experimenting is in order. 😊
@@stephendunn4942 I remember stumbling across a US nursery (fruitwood nursery) that occasionally stocked white sapote scions, unfortunately they charge a lot to ship over to the UK, so it's kind of ruled out for me at the moment. I have over a dozen white sapote seedlings growing at the moment. I plan to grow them out until I manage to get hold of some scions to graft onto them. Either that, or I'll just have to see if they will eventually fruit for me in time 🤞
The plants look wonderful 🌱 having a full time job and having a garden is challenging but rewarding.
Love it 😊

Thanks for the update. It's great to see the roots developing on the white sapote air layer 👍. What variety is it? I have a few Inga seedlings growing, I'm not sure which species but I saved them from some ice cream bean fruits I had a few weeks ago.
The white sapote is a seedling, supposedly of Suebelle. I will hopefully graft a named variety onto it. As I get a few airlayers, I will probably let one grow out to see what it may produce.
@@stephendunn4942 Great idea to graft some named varieties onto it. I'm growing some seedling white sapotes at the moment and I am hoping I'll eventually be able to get a grafted named variety. They are pretty much impossible to source here in the UK. Even scions I've never seen available on this side of the pond. What state and growing zone are you in?

I'm happy to find out the Black Jack fig seems to be prolific. I have one planted on the ground along with a bunch of others that all I do is to try to keep them alive with the high temperatures we are having here in San Antonio. I think Alma and Florea are prolific and grow at a moderate pace, unlike Improved Celeste which I will get rid of. It's becoming a monster, something I dislike about a fig tree. Between, the heat, drought, squirrels and other pests I'm fighting an uphill battle, and it happens that mother nature always wins. 😢
Hi, Stephen, I've being looking for Inga vulpina, but it seems to be more elusive than a unicorn. Supposedly I bought one online, but obviously it wasn't the real thing. It was from a nursery in Florida, so I don't know if the guy knew what he was selling. I hope you keep us informed about how your Inga is doing. By the way, I grew up in Colombia eating the other kinds of Ingas and were among my favorite fruits. Good luck with you new purchase. I may try to buy one later on.
As of right now (10-9-34) I have 6 plants that survived. A couple of them are in their second set of leaves.

Persimmons are my favorite! I have dozens of seedlings that I am hoping to graft as well. from my basic research it seems that Persimmons can be finicky about grafting, you made it look easy :) I really hope yours takes!!
My understanding is that some finicky plants such as citrus can do better with this type of graft. That's why I decided to embark on this experiment. Nothing wagered, nothing gained! 😊
Propagate me one 😊, I would love to try to plant one and keep it alive. Do they require full sun or part?
This one gets like half day of sun, but they like full to part.
It doesn't matter it isn't purple, all it matters its the taste, i get the purple ones at the store and they're pretty good, but went to a neighbor he was gifted some green figs and despite their looks, a green granny smith color, their taste was off the charts, very sweet and very flavorful
