MORRIS-SHEA INSTALLS RITZ-CARLTON DEEP FOUNDATION
Morris-Shea, an industry-leading deep foundation contractor, installed 1,406 DeWaal piles to support two 20 story towers and a parking podium at the new Ritz-Carlton Residences in Bonita Springs, Florida.
As an alternative to the project’s initial foundation specification, Morris-Shea proposed the DeWaal Piling System. These piles were determined to be more effective by decreasing the production schedule while maintaining foundation integrity.
The Morris-Shea team worked with the structural engineer to design multiple pile types for the towers and parking podium. The job site’s soil conditions were conducive to utilizing the DeWaal pile system. This efficient value engineered alternate foundation prevented stockpiling and offsite removal of approximately 35,000 cubic yards of drill spoils.
Two advanced Morris-Shea rigs, including the largest deep foundation multifunctional drill rig in use in North America, were utilized for this project. DeWaal piles were drilled to depths up to 133 feet then chipped and cut upon completion of drilling.
The load test program consisted of two 18” piles at each tower and two 14” piles at the parking podium. Additionally, Morris-Shea performed thirteen supplemental Cone Penetrometer Test soundings with their own advanced CPT unit at the project site.

For whatever reason I've been watching pile installation videos lately. Based on absolutely no related professional experience or knowledge this looks like a really good idea to me. Also the video was well done and in English. Well done. I kept wondering about using this technique for the Millennium Tower repair piles. The narrator said they were limited to 170 feet and the Millennium Tower repair piles were 270 feet below the surface. So maybe these piles wouldn't have been a solution. However, with all the money involved in that repair there might have been an opportunity for Morris-Shea to design new equipment that would have allowed the use of this kind of pile for use at greater depths? I wonder if Morris-Shea was contacted by the people in charge of that fix. Less vibration and the fact that soil would always been blocked from flowing into the hole for the new pile might have been very big advantages for the Morris-Shea piles.
