Use your old iMac screen with your MacBook Pro/Air
In this video I show you how you can use Luna Display to share your MacBook screen to your old iMac.
If you want to utilise your old iMac as a secondary screen for your new M1/M2-based MacBook Or older Intel Mac, you can do this using the Luna Display hardware/software option. This enables you to connect your iMac and still access its hard drive and integrated graphics card to enable you to easily pair this with a new Mac.
In this video I show you my set up, using the USB-C version, showing you how I connect my, 27inch 5K iMac, to use it as a perfect second screen connected to my MacBook Pro 16" 2019 (Intel).

will my camera and microphone and speakers work using this method? Or would I need a separate webcam for that?
The Facetime camera, Speakers and microphone will not work on your iMac whilst in Luna Display mode, so you'd need a separate camera, speakers and Microphone connected to your MacMini/Mac Studio.
Thanks ! muy útil !
is there a version for canon 750d?
If it's not in the list then, No.
@ no luck then. Thanks though
I bought is but it is no good at all, I have a very high speed connection but it looks very bad
What is bad about it ? Resolution ? Clarity ? Color ? Response ? Make sure Luna Display settings are optimised for your iMac.
Hi! Thanks for your video! 2 questions... what about switching to the MBP while having some processes going on the imac? they stop or continue going on the background... and... can you close the MBP lid and keep seeing it on the imac? Thanks again!
You can't run additional iMac applications, as Luna Display (Secondary) completely takes over the iMac screen. Yes you can close the MBP lid and continue to work on the iMac (Clamshell mode). Obviously you'd then need external mouse and keyboard, best connected to the MBP not your iMac for full functionality.
Thanks for this video. From your statements I gather that using an iMac in headless format has some problems. I have with me an old MBA. Can this be used as a primary display for a proposed new Mac Mini M4, and use the iMac as the secondary or actually the main display?
You can only use one additional Mac as a display. I prefer to suggest that you acquire a second monitor, your iMac can still be the 'Main' monitor, but you will have times when a second monitor is required for start-up, logging in, and other operations when you don't have the iMac on first.
@@HelpfulPhil Thanks for your reply Phil. So my old MBA cannot be used at all and thus save on costs? Sorry for not having knowledge in these matters to be able to understand why you are saying so. Would you mind me contacting you by email or would you prefer me to communicate with you through this thread? I need your advice related to many things on my heart for I perceive that you have the necessary wisdom on these matters that aren't clear to me. Regards. Dr. Somanna
@@garudasomanna I support Luna Display and other Mac related subjects as a hobby which fits into life when I have time. You can't use your MBP and iMac at the same time as monitors for your new iMac. Luna Display only supports one Mac as a monitor.
@@HelpfulPhil Thank you for being so helpful. Would the purchase of a cheaper portable monitor serve the purpose?
@@garudasomanna Yes.
Can i buy a new mac mini m4 and use my old monitor as the display for the new mac mini? Or do I need to have two monitors to make it work?
I presume you mean iMac as a monitor! the answer is yes with reservations... see my other videos on Luna Display in Headless mode.
Thanks for this video. I have with me a 2017 model of 27" Intel iMac and also Luna Display. Can I use Luna display to use the iMac as a primary display for any Mac mini I hope/plan to buy? If no, is there any workaround? Thanks in advance Dr. Somanna
Yes, any recent MacMini, but see my other videos for recommendations about using just one iMac as a screen in 'Headless' mode.
@@HelpfulPhil Okay. Thanks. In cae you can, could you please send me the link to that specific video? I loved to see your two-camera set up for this video. Just a doubt I have: do you use a teleprompter to get your voiceover? If yes, did you place the teleprompter above your main display monitor, out of view of the camera behind and to your left? What is the microphone you use and into which DAW did you record? Just curious. Regards and have a great day.
@@garudasomanna here's a link to the Luna Display playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLrImRRg9AZOh51-iGrJc_201IjuSy1LG6.html I don't use a teleprompter, just talk to the camera. Blue Yeti microphone with Adobe Audition for audio post production.
@@HelpfulPhil Thanks a lot. My present iMac, a vintage 2017 model is nicely chugging along with MacOS Ventura and being Intel, can climb no more. Just getting tempted to plunge into the newer MacOS features and buying a Mac Mini 3/4 could be lighter on my purse should the iMac be used as a primary display courtesy Luna Display that I have with me already. I am amazed that your voiceover is of an extempore kind! The flow of speech, though a bit slow and of a 'homely' kind, seemed to be devoid of stutter or search for words [Uh, hm etc]. If this voiceover has not been overly edited for such 'flaws' then I have to say that you have a very good talent of expressing your content. God bless you HelpfulPhil. You have been a blessing to me.😀
Thanks for the review. I have set up between MacMini M1 and late 2014 iMac with Retina display using Thunderbolt 3 to Tbolt 2. Only issue I am having is getting the mouse to work properly. Currently using a 3 button PC mouse with USB dongle. Guess I'll try a USB wired mouse. Any suggestion on mouse?
I don't generally offer hardware suggestions, just make sure that your mouse is driving the MacMini, not the iMac in this situation.
I was having the same problem with the Luna splash screen appearing either showing WiFi or prompting for WiFi in the connection options, even though I had selected Ethernet in settings. I also had the 'jumpy mouse' effect. Thus this video was of interest as was your superb video describing the Luna product. However I found that my Ethernet was functioning OK. I have a new M4 iMac with a 2016 iMac as the second screen and as WiFi isn't even enabled on the 2016 iMac I found the whole thing quite confusing. I experimented by disabling WiFi on the M4 and this fixed the problem, with Ethernet showing in the Luna panel. As some things rely on WiFi I tried changing the service order in the Network settings on the M4, with Ethernet first and WiFi second, hoping this would allow both to be connected without this issue. But this caused the original problem to return. It seems that Luna gets a bit confused when both connection options exist, prompting for WiFi even when everything is connected and working. I've now disabled WiFi and all is OK again. I also notice that Luna initiates the second screen far faster when the WiFi is disabled, I assume because it is no longer trying to make the choice. I thought my experience might be of use to others.
Thanks for your input. I still have both Wi-Fi and ethernet working. I find that commonly Luna Display will choose Wi-Fi, but then, if I wait a few seconds it will switch to ethernet.
Apple is fine at my special words. That’s not the problem. The problem is, the Apple wants to write its own thoughts instead of my thoughts. If I want Voice recognition to dictate for me I will have to get rid of Apple as my dictation tool because Apple can’t do the job anymore. Replacing what I say with phrases that Apple thinks are more common has gone too far and has broken dictation in Apple. Want to dictate TH-cam comments but I have to get Apple out of the process because Apple dictation is worse than useless.
I've never found the Apple tries to write things for me! Yes, it can get things wrong, but that's generally the English language for you!
@@HelpfulPhil i’m on an iPad and when I press the microphone button, I think it is Apple that is doing the dictation for me. Whoever it is doing the dictation for me knows my contacts. My problem is that whatever is writing my dictation for me on my iPad is replacing too many of my words and phrases with phrases that they think I’m more likely. I’m tired of things like the word Venus being a place by the word penis. Is it much more likely that I would want to write penis than Venus? It also seems that whatever is writing for me, does not want me to write the words, Israel or Zionist. I can only write Israel and Zionist if I speak very slowly. I will say some thing about Israel, Zionist, and it quickly spoke in Settings and watch what happens. The rain in Spain is mainly in the plane is really Zionist are also in the plains
Can you do this in Ventura or Sonoma?
Possibly not! I'm unable to check, but it is certainly not the same sequence in Mac OS15 (Sequoia). I'll investigate further and produce a MacOS 15 run through if it is still possible.
Hi Phil, I'm thinking about purchasing a new Mac Mini M4 and a Mac Studio monitor. I have an older iMac, which I'd like to use as a secondary screen using Luna (to drag and drop and use for extra windows with my main screen - and now, extra storage!). Luna says that you have to plug the dongle directly into the Mac Mini - does that mean that I can't use a Thunderbolt 4 dock, like a Caldigit? Just asking because you don't get a lot of ports with the Mini. Also, could you let me know if all the above is possible (using the old iMac as a screen)? Thanks for the videos - they're really useful!
You have the perfect use case for Luna Display. Theoretically you should use the USB-C/Thunderbolt port built onto the Mini, but you can try the Caldigit though it would definitely need to be one of its Thunderbolt compatible ports.
I have a MacBook Pro from 2015, and recently purchased a Mac mini. I would like to ask if I can use a Mac mini as the host for my MacBook, but operate it with my MacBook. Thank you
You 'can' use the keyboard and trackpad from your MacBook, but you still need to logIn and perform other operations on the Mac Mini which requires a dedicated keyboard and likely a mouse too, so although it's possible, the best option is to use a separate Keyboard and Mouse for both and try it to see what works for you.
@@HelpfulPhil Apple has a screen sharing feature, isn't it the simplest operation. Thank you for your reply
@@chinesegoodstuff4371 Apple does not support making an iMac one of your extended screens for a Mac. Screen sharing is a different, but very useful feature which I use in some of my other videos..
@@HelpfulPhil Friend, I have been able to use my 15-year-old Macbookpro keyboard and mouse to operate my new macmini m4. Although it has a little delay, I think it is very good when I use it at home.
Can I use Luna to display my Mac Mini on my Windows PC and/or the other way around?
No. This is for making an iMac a display.
@@HelpfulPhiloh, so it also doesn’t work to show a Mac Mini on a Macbook Air or iPad Pro? In that case I’ll have to cancel my order
@@AndyDeMeyer It will allow you to show your Mac Mini on a MacBook Air or iPad, but your message stated '...on my Windows PC'.
@@HelpfulPhilah ok great. Yes that’s true, was just wondering about the different scenarios I can use Luna for. As a developer it would be very helpful to be able to see my Mac on my PC or vice versa. But my main use case is showing my Mac mini on my MacBook air or iPad
Hi Phil! I have a late 2015 27 inch iMac and I'm buying a new Mac mini M4 with a 27 inch Apple Studio Display. And the appropriate Luna dongle of course. Can you suggest how to connect the two displays please? My router is in another room and I can't connect to it with the ethernet cable. Could I connect the Studio display thunderbolt port to the iMac's thunderbolt 2 mini display port using a mini display port to usb c cable? Many thanks!
Although I don't have the same setup I'm sure you can connect the iMac with a valid Thunderbolt cable to either your studio display or your Mac mini. See the connex options here: help.astropad.com/article/470-connection-methods? sca_ref=3948717.ToH2p0eo7q
@@HelpfulPhil Thanks will try it soonest
I bought one for my 2017 imac. I gave up trying to make it work. The latency was painful..
It can depend upon how many apps, and whether you have multiple video related apps running. Connect using cable and it should be good. I comfortably run my 5K iMac as the main monitor for my Mac Studio M1, and watch TH-cam videos on it too. What are you trying to run with it? What is your main Mac?
Thank you
Thanks. Finally a solution without having to trash the Dictation preferences and reboot my computer. For those with short attention spans, the solution is to simply enter the following text into the terminal: killall corespeechd
Hello Phil, thanks for making this very useful video. You mentioned in the video (around 05.25) that "there's no HDMI ports on any Mac's as far as I know." I have an M2 16`' MacBook Pro and it does have an HDMI port (according to Apple's Spec). Can this be used to connect my laptop to my 2017 iMac Pro using a physical cable? And if yes, will this improve the latency of connection between the two, e.g. cause less delay issues and increase the quality of the image on the iMac?
thanks for the comment, proves I don't know everything about all Mac's! No, you can't connect the iMac to your M2 using an HDMI cable. Only with Luna Display can you use the iMac as a screen. Any wired connection, ethernet-USB-Thunderbolt works best.
Terrible 6 minutes of confusing instructions I looked elsewhere & found a ''2 second'' fix. Hit CONTROL TWICE fixed the problem
🤷♀
It's only terrible for somebody who doesn't understand the problem that he is showing you how to fix. Sometimes it's better not to comment on things that you don't understand.
@@lazlo342 How does hitting Control twice fix a stuck Dictation feature? It can't. The problem is described quite clearly in the video. Only people with a matching problem would be likely to search for and execute this solution. Hi Phil. Thanks for your really useful videos. I've got an new Mac Min M4 coming on Friday and I'll be following your tips with using Luna to keep using my 2012 iMac screen. Just one question though. Will the Mac Mini utilise the speakers in the iMac?
No. Speakers, Microphone or Camera will not work on the iMac whilst connected with Luna Display. I think I cover this in a Q&A video on my channel.
@@HelpfulPhil Thanks Phil. I must have missed that in the Q&A.
Legend, Thanks. Works a treat.. got me think what else I can do with Shortcuts to improve my day / make using a mac a bit easier 😊
How is the CPU usage on Luna display?
nothing I've ever thought about, which means it is insignificant.
This didn’t work. Running Sonoma 14.2 with two users. Dictation is working perfectly for one user but stopped working for the other who used it a lot. Any suggestions?
This fix is so that the Dictation feature runs if it gets stuck. Do you mean that it doesn’t recognize the voice, or that it doesn’t run for the other user?
We appear to have found a solution to this problem by changing the language from Irish English to Australian English. This also worked when we change the language to French or Dutch may be of interest other people that have the same problem.
Hello, and thanks for your explanations. Will you get 5 hours in 4K streaming been using 1080p since it might overheat?
Try using a small USB case fan behind the camera. I and many others do this. You can stream all day so long as you have enough power, so make sure your power supply is delivering enough to keep the camera going. You'll need <2V from a USB block.
Yes. based upon my recommendations below.

Hi Phil! My situation and my use cases are similar to the ones described by @davew3139. I am planning to pre-order the new Mac Mini M4 and to connect it to my 2015 4K iMac in headless mode. You need Luna Display for Your iMac to work as a secondary monitor. Once you have Luna Display, connect the Mac's using a good quality USB-C/Thunderbolt cable and you will be good to go.
@@HelpfulPhil Ok, thank you for your response.

Hi Phil. Great video btw. My wife's new laptop has both usbc/thunderbolt port and HDMI. She wants to use her 2020 27" iMac as the display. Should I buy the HDMI version or the USBCT version? Will the graphics card in the laptop produce a retina-quality signal and thus use the retina display? Or shall I stick with the HDMI one (which she could use in her older laptop) and there will be little or no different to the quality on the iMac? Thanks!
I don't know what the features of your laptop graphics are. Luna Display will however cater for up to 5K video output.
Hello. Thank you very much for your video! congratulations! I just bought the coffee maker. I haven't started it yet, but I have verified that the steam control, when I put it down, has a lot of "play." That is to say. He moves a lot from his position. As if it were poorly tightened or loose. Is it normal for this to happen before use? Do you think I should return it? When it is in a horizontal position, however, this does not happen, it has no play. Thank you so much.
I suggest you use it and ensure that you retain the warranty just in case it fails.
Hey Phil, thx for the tutorial. Question - is it still possible to connect 3rd monitor to old iMac via thunderbolt cable? I think yes, since old iMac as I see, works as stand alone device and running its own MacOS system not in a Target Mode. Just wonder if the 1st Mac Studio would recognize both monitors with Luna device? Theoretically it should see it as an external computer with 2 monitors. Yet I'm not sure thus a question to you if you have had a chance to try this kind of set up? Thx for answer if you have any personal experience on it or know it from other source.
excellent question. Yes you can connect as many more external monitors as your Mac will allow, one being the Luna Display connected iMac.
thank you so much for this detailed video. I was able to get my 4k functionality to work. I had the camlink and the HDMI cable this was the last step the camera settings. thanks for show me how to navigate the camera. I have had this camera for over 2 years and finally a clear tutorial on the difference between the menu and the function button.
Thanks . Glad it helped.
It didn't work for macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 The only way everything comes back to normal is the restart of the system
this video was made in Mac OS Sonoma so it works in most situations. I hope that users would have chosen to restart the system as a first line solution.
Sweet!
With a newer iMac using an older one as the second monitor, I assume two keyboards would be required, since both iMacs would be operating as standalones?
Basically you’re correct. You’ll use the keyboard and mouse connected to the newer iMac mostly so make sure they’re your favourite/best devices.
did work great
Its work, thank you
I'm getting nowhere with my Luna display. close to sending it back. 2017 Imac and a Mac mini m2 pro. why do need a router to connect your Mac's. Im trying to connect with ethernet directly with a network cable. Wi fi just keeps taking over. Imac unusable as a monitor. 2 second mouse lag and totally blurred screen. Hate it!
The router option is the easiest and allows you to use all of the wired networking features of your Mac's, plus most people have a router with Ethernet ports so don't have to buy any new gear, other than Ethernet cables. If you have selected Ethernet as your primary connection choice in the Luna Display software, give it a minute to find that connection as it will likely find WiFi first then switch to your choice. It works brilliantly with my M1 Mac to 2017 iMac! I can watch video and edit in full 5K.
Thanks, your Video was very helpful Phil 🙂
Awesome
Hi Phil, do you have any video on how to use imac as main monitor with luna ?
yes - search my channel, even look for the Luna Display playlist
Thank you Phil... Can I connect my Mac Mini to my Imac 2017 directly with an ethernet cable instead of using a switch or router as you have?
Yes.
Help.. I have the t5i and followed your steps but still have the black border in obs.. how do you get rid of it?
maybe it's not possible with the T5i. I guess Zooming in with OBS is an option.
Great video Phil! Very helpful! Keep up the excellent work!
