Ultegra R8000 Pedals - FAKE vs Original
I bought a pair of Shimano Ultegra R8000 Pedals from eBay and they just didn't seem right. Went ahead and got another pair form my local bike shop and immediately started noticing differences so I made this quick video so that you can know the pedals you have are the real deal.

Thank you bro. There’s a lot of really good clones out there especially on Amazon !! my advise to ppl spend a little more at your local bike shop and have a piece of mind.
I got fake one on aliexpress to😒 but just some days over the refund zone...
Thanks for making the video for awareness. I purchased some "R8000" pedals on Amazon the other day for about 100 bucks. When I tried to install them yesterday, they simply would not thread in (I am very familiar with L/R-hand threading on pedals so that was not it.) They looked pretty convincing out of the box, but now I wonder. I wasted no time in returning them, however. Caveat emptor.
Thanks for making this. I got a fake shimano chain on amazon and now I'm paranoid anything I buy is counterfeit!
the original box have the qr code to check its original?
Great info. Will be getting a set of these in the mail, so ill be referencing this when inspecting mine. Thanks!
I ended up caving and getting a genuine pair. 119g/pedal. Tension adjustment has a strong click sound. 6g/pedal lighter than my 105 pd-r7000.
My genuine 105 r7000 pedals weigh 125g each. I wanted to upgrade to r8000 since the rest of the bike is r8000, but for 3g/pedal weight savings and Ultegra written on the pedals it's not worth it. Also, one big thing you didn't mention is the tension adjustment. Genuine will click, fake won't.
If u dont have both in hand,no way to tell if u just buy them
That's a pretty accurate statement but sometimes you can tell by the price being too low. Besides even if you already bought them and you notice they are fake you can usually return them to the seller.
Thanks for posting. I got stung with a fake shimano 105 chain from aliexpress. I will learn to be more careful which seller I choose from now on.
What made you realize the chain was fake?
@@TalMaital There was no blue tick on the front of the packaging, otherwise appearance wise it's almost identical except for lower quality cardboard. The instructions leaflet was quite dark, like a poor photocopy and it was not folded neatly. Price wise, the seller was selling the DuraAce and Ultegra 11 speed chain for almost the same price. The chain itself is a very good fake, has all the inscriptions stamped on each link and even the quick links which were in the packet with the chain. But after researching on TH-cam, another channel said the quick links are always packed separately from the chain. I then bought Genuine from a local bike store and then compared them.
Thank you for posting. Confirmed I was sold fakes (ebay, yenzotrading-1). Unfortunately not the only TH-cam video doing this kind of comparison. The fakes have been improved somewhat. For me the giveaway is the bottom part which holds the tension spring. Notches at the ends of the semicircle = genuine Shimano. Obviously too expensive to go back and change the molds for the fakes which have no notches. The clicking screw, box art, and print quality on the pedals are improved on the more recent fakes.
AWESOME! Thanks!
I look forward to review of knock off models including 540 550
Please help us how to tell a fake from genuine from only one sample?
If you don't cycle a lot, they're fine. Fake stuff is easy to get in China, I live here. Most of it is great. It's amazing to shop but there's genuine stuff too. Often fakes wear out, try sonething else. It's fun.
For sure, if you cycle a lot that's when it starts to matter, otherwise some of the "fakes" put there are more than enough.
Did someone here have an issue where the tension adjuster won't tighten down or rather the spring kicks the adjustment back to it's starting position. It's a racework cleats pedal.
The bolt that secures the axle to the pedal sits flush against the pedal on the fake while the bolt on the original is bezeled near the pedal.
Make another video with proper lights..
Been using a set of 105 carbon pedals from aliexpress. Haven't had any issues. Possible they are just made for Asian markets.
Aliexpress definitely has some original parts as well, I've also had mostly good experience on that front.
Thanks for sharing your insight. I just bought an ultegra pedal from Amazon at $50 less than msrp and I was wondering if I got a real one. So far everything I researched is pointing to genuine. Is it possible that Shimano has 2 factories? And the ‘genuine’ version is marketed to rich countries while the ‘fake’ one is marketed to the less rich?
I have always been buying Shimano cleats on Aliexpress for 50% off RRP. They look like real one and lasts me over 2years so I doubt they are fake. I have fakes that lasts me 2-3 rides and broke. Or If i am lucky , about a year or sold. So yea its normal to be way cheaper than RRP online I believe.
Just for you info Shimano does have a factory in Malaysia, but it's mostly manufacturing components for Shimano
yes malaysia is the bigest factory for shimano
How much did you paid for the fake one? There must be a difference too, right?
Where did you buy the fakes and were they advertised as Shimano OEM? Thanks, good vinfo
Are there differences in performances? Price differences between the two?
Yes there is. I bought a fake by accident and it didn't even last 2 months. The metal plate fell off, the bearing locked and the pin that holds the back cleat lock fell off. You're better off buying a pair of genuine R550 than a fake R8000 ultegra.
@@lIIustration shit, the metal plate of mine also fell off and i just realized i bought fakes. Shit!
thanks man!
Hi! Also check if the tension adjustment clicks when you turn the allen key? On the fakes, I understand they don't - but on the genuine ones there should be a clicking sound.
right
So far. Mine have all the tell-tale signs in the video. But mine clicks... maybe they're getting better at the fakes? Also, mine are 130g vs 132g that the fakes were in the video, pretty close though.
@@Marc_B. Where did you buy the pedals?
@@aus80srockradio94 starts with an e, and has four letters.
@@Marc_B. Oh yes, that "place". 😒
