My Summer Car - Taking the Satsuma to the Shop

She's all build, upgraded, tuned and ready to go. Time to hit up the shop! Just fancied showing her off and seeing what speed we can reach on the open road to Teimo's. If you haven't heard of My Summer Car and like the look of this then definitely check it out. It's a lot of work building the car up but feels like a real accomplishment when you finally get your plates. A great title if you're i...

It finally arrived! In the video I briefly show all the components from the Kickstarter version, including the optional faction upgrade pack for owners of the 1st printing. So pretty much what it says on the tin really. I've been eagerly awaiting this one and I'm really looking forward to trying the new factions. Here's hoping it'll be hitting the table some time in the near future.
Game Talk - Revised Art in Board Games
มุมมอง 534 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the first video in a potential series aiming to explore topics in the tabletop world. Have you ever seen a newly revised edition of a much loved game and just though "yuck"? In board games it can be tricky to get the right balance between making the art appealing and functional. Here I aim to highlight some of the design changes to board game art by giving examples of reprinted games wi...

My 5 most disliked game mechanics

    I agree on most points, and I would like to expand a bit on a few and add some opinions on the others: The main engine in the game is your deck (this is a deck builder) so obviously pay attention to that. What I saw in many new players, they look at the cards and then just start buying because they see some good ones - inflating their deck beyond any reasonable point. Buy only the ones that go with your current play, what do you want to do. This goes double if you have the expansion, Expedition Leaders (which I highly recommend, we never play without them). Don't buy everything just because it is good - it needs to be a) good at the moment b) fit with what you are doing and c) be able to be drawn in the right time. A deck with 20 cards is a useless deck. You want at most 10-ish cards that can do some combos and that can be drawn multiple times. Focus. While it looks like you can do everything... don't. Two biggest sources of points are Guardians and Research track. Focus on one or the other (and build your deck accordingly), never on both. You might focus on one and do a few steps of the other, but never go for both with the same force, or build your deck to go for both. And don't forget the Idols. First two slots should be used early on to give you a head start on the Research track (so you get Assistants earlier - meaning more free resources over time) or hunt some Guardians. Later slots should be considered based on the amount of points/rewards you are getting (because 3-4 points are not a joke) but the first two spots for 1-2 points, don't even think about it, use them! At the end - about Fears. Sure, they are the worst cards out there... but they are not useless. There will often be a requirement for you to pay a Boot for some effect (Assistant, Guardian, travel...) so unless you absolutely pollute your deck with them, they will always have some use every turn. 1-2 is OK, don't be scared. 3 is borderline, depending on what you do, but not recommended for Beginners. 4 is too much. With Idols and Fears (they both essentially cost you points) come rewards in the form of faster start, and sometimes that is very powerful, setting you up for mid-late game as an absolute powerhouse. You'll have Assistants faster then anyone else, more free resources with which you can get your hands on the cards before others. So suffering a few fears and an idol or two used up by turn 2, is no biggie. You'll just spend the latter half getting rid of Fear cards while gently cruising towards victory, having left more careful players in the dust. Appendix: About the cards and Assistants displayed in the video - I would avoid Fishing Rod and Precision Compass. They are powerful, but they take place in the deck and their sole purpose is to populate (dilute) the deck even more. At the same time, they are not that cheap, have lowest point reward and only a single moving icon. Artifacts are highly situational. As for the Assistants, the two gold coins one is S tier, while the Discount for purchase one is the one everyone avoids (I was surprised to see it featured here as a good choice). Two coins one is so powerful that it has been nerfed in the expansion (there it gives one coin and one boot on silver side). Coin for arrow/ruby one and boot for arrow one are great, followed by tablet and movement Assistants. But again, base them on your build and focus.

      Good additional comments; My two cents are 1) highlighting is the two "workers" are limiting, therefore items or artefacts that can activate sites site without a worker are usually worth their weight in gold don't just frivolously spend your gold in the first round. 2) even a nice (and clean) deck needs to spend cards for placement, so also look out for cards that have a double ship or double jeep ability. And you don't need to spend an artefact for its ability the second time around, they are all aeroplane symbols! PS: the mixed (jeep and boat) ones are useless towards this cause since there are no mixed symbols on the board.

    Kemet was a game that I thought had lovely art, but could do with updated symbols etc. But wow they somehow made it worse!

  • @Sweetslut82
    @Sweetslut82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mostly prefer original art because the new art that came up are pretty but they distract from the gameplay, especially for euro games. I think you can also make comparisons about games that were reimplemented in your future videos. Not all reimplementations are necessary or better than the original.

    • @tabletopcloset8992
      @tabletopcloset8992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm the same for the most part but occasionally it is an improvement. It's definitely more of a concern for euro games where being able to keep track of the board state is very important. For thematic games there's more leeway, but I do think there has been a move to a more generic art style and that designers/publishers are less likely to take risks (e.g. Inis). Indeed. If there's enough demand for a game why not simply reprint it and let it thrive on its own merits? Unfortunately this isn't always possible right enough, when the publisher doesn't hold the rights to the original assets. All food for thought though. Thanks for watching. :)

  • @TheBeardedFool

    I feel that the title cards are unnecessary. If you are wanting to keep your videos shorter, I'd recommend scripting yourself, so you can flow through your topics faster.

    • @tabletopcloset8992
      @tabletopcloset8992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The title cards were really there to help structure the video, but I know what you mean about disrupting the flow and adding to the length. In the future I might focus on card types (creature, action, artifact) as opposed to houses as this grouping should allow quicker comparisons and explanations. I did have a rough plan for the video but decided on a fairly loose approach as it's really just an opportunity to get my thoughts across and talk about the deck. Thanks for the feedback!

      Yes, I have thoroughly enjoyed my two plays of it so far, but I've found it's a bit too involved for some in my main gaming group. Chinatown is much more streamlined so it's much easier to get to the table. Shame as I love the deep trading and complex interactions this one promotes. Thank you for watching.
