    His arc is one of the best in the entire series, but I do wish the show did more with him leading to his inevitable death. I think had he be introduced and credited as an actual new main cast member of the show during Season 3 it would of hit more. Personally, I would of preferred his home life being shown more. Giving him reason to prefer being at school vs. at home. Rather it be constant neglect or abuse or a combination would of gave more understanding to his anger issues. Then instead of him leaving the school & return, having him stay throughout would of added on to all the things that lead to his boiling point.

And when he came back he was showing the same obsessive signs with Emma his new crush. And here is the craziest part when he showed up with a gun his first target was paige and Emma was a target. He was a coward who only was bold enough to hurt women. Even when he shot Jimmy he couldn’t even look he had to turn away

    1. i have to disagree with toby ever taking his relationship with liberty seriously. they were grieving and that’s his dead best friends true love aka her dead baby daddy, that’s some tubi shi cmon toby 😭 2. agree that claire could’ve ended up with either guy and been in hell. she should’ve slapped eli after that “really claire” moment. stayed single, been besties with drew, and went on to not be tied down by her toxic high school sweetheart. sis couldn’t stay away

    before even starting the video, i think degrassi is amazing at showing all of their characters as victims and villains at some point in their arc. even tho i didn’t watch it until i was like 16, it helped shed light simply on the complexity of human nature. especially when it’s teenagers! such a valuable lesson

    • @ShaneTheCreative
      @ShaneTheCreative 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I def agree, I feel like most were more flawed as opposed to villains, but even with villian characters (i.e. Jay, Alex, Rick, Johnny) they weren’t just 100% bad despite joining the show as antagonists, so just like you said

  • @doe.dearest
    @doe.dearest 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    i have a lot of sympathy for esme. she shows traits of what i think is maybe bpd. i just finished watching next class for the like 5th time and i was really upset at the end because i felt like it further stigmatized mental illness in a way. when they showed all the social media posts of the characters' happy endings going off to college, etc., but they did not include one for esme, i literally started sobbing for her. i was also upset about how awful all the other characters talked about her and the only sympathetic thing said about her in the end was maya saying esme needs the kind of help that i did. i feel like that's just how people treat mentally ill people in crisis irl tho. like instead of seeing someone clearly needing help or acceptance, people tend to demonize those people. they immediately write them off as inherently bad.

    • @ShaneTheCreative
      @ShaneTheCreative 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree, even in times when I didn’t care for Esme the other characters still treated her terribly like when Zig and his friends tried slut shaming her, and oh how I wish that the show would’ve had another season to have Esme enter her redemption arc/seeking help and us getting to see the process for that, and I agree it’s sad the lack of sympathy the other characters had for her, now granted I can understand considering a lot of them had been done wrong by her and also the fact that they were most likely ignorant on the type of disorders she could be struggling with hence her “odd” behavior, but still I can def see how the show ending her storyline like that comes across as slightly demonizing her and her mental illnesses/disorders

    • @doe.dearest
      @doe.dearest 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ShaneTheCreative ugh, the slut shaming was awful. another moment that made me feel for her, is when she tried to fit in at the beginning of the camping episode, and no one would give her a chance and made it awkward. you're so right, though. esme did some terrible things, but it would've been amazing to see her character development and an inspiration for viewers to see that everyone deserves a chance at redemption.

      Very much on the “glorified extra” part, in my newest video I talk about Liberty and had did some looking back at her time on the show and I came to realize that they didn’t do her charater any justice either really. Goes to show that TV in general from American media really is racist. The people who obviously say 'woke crap' this and that are even more racist just because a character of color has any kind of prominence. The fact that Degrassi is better and is still pretty racist in their writing is very disappointing. This is the world we still live in. It's not any better. Look at movies like Barbie and other blockbusters, any series these days. People say it's on average better but it isn't/

    Great deep dive video.i was just thinking about this issue when watching the reality show southern charm which features mostly white blonde females who look exactly the same.i work occasionally as an extra in Atlanta tv and film.i actually feel bad that black females get treated like glorified extras.cant feel good,if you have trained so hard to be a working actor,then get upgraded to cast ,only to get one line in an episode.ive seen extras randomly given.a few lines hopefully this issue will improve since the strike and with networks like abc adding workshops for minorities that supposedly help them find opportunities in Hollywood.

      Marco and Hazel as well, they tried to put them together when we knew he was in the closet. Ummm...with Jimmy it was a bit of a strange one, so he was dating Ashley first then Paige tried to make Ashley jealous by kissing Jimmy during a play rehearsal at English class. Then Jimmy and Ashley broke up, then Jimmy tried dating Ellie who said he was cute but she couldn't go out with him because Ash is her best friend, then he went out with Ash again then they broke up again, then he went out with Hazel and nothing happened through their entire relationship until Hazel broke up with Jimmy because he said Ellie inspired his art, then Jimmy asks Ellie out and she says she likes someone else (obsessed over Craig...deserves whatever heartache she gets) then Ashley gets back together with Jimmy and then Jimmy and Ashley stay together for nearly a year (school time) and break up when Jimmy goes out with the newly introduced guest character (yeah they had to bring a guest character who also was paralyzed) Trina who he said he wanted to marry in his last ever appearance on the show in an episode in Season 8. Technically they did barely enough to kinda make it not seem that way for Jimmy even though it did but everyone else it happened to in classic textbook fashion which is horrible. I always wondered what it would be like if Jimmy and Emma ever were together...he's too good for her, she would have drove him crazy

    I hate how women of color were treated on this show. The black women were extras who had a line or two, the number of asian women in the degrassi black hole is ridiculous, and we didn't really get any other women of color until Next Class (even then, you had one of the few women of color written as the "crazy" girl).

    • @blackflameprod1455
      @blackflameprod1455 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand your point but I do wanna add in that Esme was not just the “crazy girl.” Although never stated on the show, Esme is diagnosed borderline personality disorder with histrionic traits (it’s on the wiki) and I also have the same exact diagnosis and always felt like I had true representation on that show. It’s unfortunate next class wasn’t renewed for another season because they finally showed her having a fleshed out borderline splitting episode and weren’t able to touch on anything more afterwards. And I just don’t want people to think of Esme as “the crazy girl”. Seeing her and her behaviors instantly made me feel less alone. She’s not crazy she just needed help. But I do understand where you’re coming from but at the same time I also think it’s better they made a character with mental illness a POC. Because a common stereotype is that mental problems are a “white people thing” when anyone of any race, gender, or sexuality can struggle with mental illness.

    In all honesty, I preferred Cartoon Network at the time. When I was on Disney, I wanted to see Dave the Barbarian (my name is Dave). For me, Proud Family was just something that was on. I watched it, but I never got into it. As an adult, I tend to prefer shows that were meant to entertain over shows that were meant to teach lessons or morals. Those that are supposed to teach (preach), in my opinion, typically handle their topics in a rushed or shallow manner that can potentially do more harm than good. Like in the episode about bullying where Penny's answer to dealing with the gross sisters was to work for them. Or how one or two episodes prior, Trudy let them into the house and guilted Penny into accepting them. I was bullied by some of the girls in my class, so I didn't appreciate either episode. I actually just got into South Park, and I think they handle race better than Proud Family ever could. The Big Fix in season 25 taught that you should get to know someone before you try to "Help" them. Stan tried to "Help" Tolkien, and the guy was heavily embarrassed. At least that's how I interpret the episode. As for, say, the Juneteenth episode of Louder and Prouder, it felt like the creators were trying to catch up with political fads from 2020. All in all, I think they suck at what they do.

    White privilege? Shawn was also white. He was just poor while Peter was a rich kid.

      Yes, even poor white people have/benefit from white privilege. Granted, Peter had more privileges over Sean with being a rich white male, but Sean was still a white male. White privilege doesn’t mean your don’t have struggles and isn’t effected by other oppressing factors (i.e. white women, having white privilege but still facing sexism) and then race and class are two different things

    About the Gross Sisters. They're way underrated and just like with LaCienega people focus on the negative and knit pick reasons to be offended so they can have something to complain about and their voices be heard. The Gross Sisters are bullies but they actually break stereotypes about female characters being soft and girly and chasing after boys and what not. Two the Gross Sisters were shown to have moved up out of the hood and decided to pursue a career in music. I know what they say about black people using rap to get out of the hood, but the Gross Sisters waited until they got out of the hood to start rapping. Also after they met Lou Rawls in the original series, he was the one who suggested they should pursue a career in music after they showed they were really talented singers but declined because they felt there were too many CROOKS in the music business. Also the Gross Sisters (or at least Nubia) are actually quite intelligent. they Gross Sisters are business savvy. They formed their own record company and have advanced accounting knowledge for their age. Also they work hard everyday because their parents are tough on them and they instill the importance of having a work ethic which works against another stereotype that black people are lazy. They also know not to cross certain lines as well.

      I see the point you’re making, even though I’ve got my issues with the gross sisters and their designs and whatnot but like some of what you said they were eventually shown to have some good qualities. But I will also say they could’ve showcase them not being “soft and girly” without making them the antagonists/villains of the show too
