The Influencing the Corridors of Power (ICOP) project is hosted by SOAS University of London. The Project aims to promote the impact of ongoing university-based research. The project is led by Prof Alison Scott-Baumann and former students and staff of SOAS. We are proud of SOAS’s record of political engagement and student activism and wish to improve the impact of university staff and students in Government. By bringing researchers and Westminster closer together, we address the democratic deficit which we believe is a result of encroaching government control on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly on SOAS and other campuses. The project is born out of the five-year AHRC/ESRC funded project, “Representing Islam on Campus”, and the follow-up project, “Voices of Dissent”. We intend that this project will serve as a model for the higher education sector and democracy more generally.
Freedom for Some Confronting UK Immigration Detention
In an era where migration has been reduced to a tired trope for authoritarian political gain, the UK created a system of locking up people on the move. This expert panel seeks to confront pressing questions to entangle the UK detention system: politically, legally, and personally. Central to this discussion is an exploration how we came to have the current system, in what ways migrants, activists and lawyers navigate the system, and how it feels to be detained in the UK. The panel will also reflect on the potential pathways for a progressive UK government to navigate these challenges with integrity and justice.

I recently saw a sarcastic comment that said if you want to deflect accusations accuse your accusers of antisemitism It’s akin to the victim hood that’s been engendered in many here

It's always someone elses fault; from Prevent to Nigel Farage. I'm a British Bangladeshi same as Tasnim. He doesn't mention the rising tide of Conservative Saudi-inspired Wahhabi Islam in our Muslim communities in the UK. The obsession with creating an ahistorical Caliphate in the Muslim world that is divorced from reality. The fact that Masjids, Charities, Madrashas and other places that you would expect children to be safe are now peopled by some who are peddling grievance politics and trying to create a parallel Arabesque culture in our inner cities. We should also address the growing intergenerational divide where our kids can't speak openly with elders incl parents. We absolutely don't talk about relationships and sex. This creates spaces for extremists to befriend children. These girls went to Syria in part to meet their handsome Jihadi Knights in shining armour rather than have no choice in a marriage partner chosen by parents, maybe from 'back home'. We need to reflect as a community how to solve some of our issues rather than deflect and blame the government only. Tasnim is now standing as an independent candidate for the next Parliament for Bethnal Green & Bow based entirely on the Gaza war. So he isn't as far removed from the same Islamic political identity politics that animated some of Shamima's actions. Best that everyone in the debate declares their biases, motivations and sympathies. Not just one side.
