Tuning Tips: 1. Play three beats with the bow 2. Listen during the fourth beat 3. Adjust fine tuners between bows, as needed, until each string is “locked in” to pitch 4. Experiment with pizzicato, long bows, shorter rhythms, different articulations as a warmup! ~ ~ ~ This is a 12-minute recording, so students can get plenty of opportunities to tune each open string! I added tape/marks to my fingerboard to visualize the notes in different positions. You could use automotive pin striping (which is generally removable) or draw temporary lines with a graphite pencil on the ebony (black) part. I added these tapes, corresponding to A-string: B-natural (first position, 1st finger) D-natural (first position, 4th finger) E-natural (fourth position, 1st finger) A, O...

Harmonics - Largo desolato by J. Mashak

Harmonics have a highly unique sound. They are created when a finger is placed lightly on the string instead of pressing the string down against the fingerboard, as is normally done. This allows the entire length of the string to vibrate, and it can sound haunting and beautiful at the same time. The piece I am playing here comes from a solo cello composition by a friend named Jacob Mashak. He l...

I used to hate practicing with a metronome, but it is so helpful! 1. It forces you to pay attention to rhythm and meter, which helps with accuracy 2. It shows you the places you tend to rush or slow down 3. It trains you to keep a steady pulse, which builds confidence Music is about patterns and repetition, as well as change. It’s easier to notice the changes when something (the beat) is consta...

Simple Gifts - Shaker Hymn on Cello and Oboe
@ParkerPlus it’s true that your fingers have to be in exactly the right place to be in tune. It takes a lot of careful practice, and constant attention to pitch. But, it gets easier the more you do it!
Guitar player here , how in the world do you know where to put your fingers , like I get after you learn it ,you remember it but like if I put mine like 1cm more up then your g it will sound different ,no?
Great question!
