1981 Indianapolis, Last Ride for Jim Hurtubise
Former driver Norm Hall formed Luxury Racers in 1980. Hiring Journeyman driver Jerry Miller, they ran in the USAC Silver Crown Series. But Norm wanted to come back to Indianapolis. Norm purchased a Kingfish (72 Eagle copy) from Grant King, and entered Miller for the 1981 Indy 500. Jerry passed his rookie test but never felt comfortable. Norm then recruited Jim Hurtubise. What happened? Watch the video to find out. Thanks to Marie Hall, Norm's widow for her recollections of that weekend. Please pardon the background noise (Winter Racing Memorabilia Show at the Dallara IndyCar Factory in downtown Speedway, Indiana). Special thanks to John Mahoney who found a rare photo of Herk in the Kingfish. When in Speedway, stop in at Three Sisters and a Trunk Boutique & Racing Memorabilia store on Main Street. From Motorsport Magazine - Brands Hatch, England, July 30th. It is remarkable, hut true, that we have not had a serious motor race, other than Grand Prix events, in Great Britain since 1959; this was brought home forcibly when practice began at Brands Hatch for the B.O.A.C. 500. The assembly of cars was such that British spectators must have wondered if they were not at Nürburgring, Spa or Le M...

Formidable vidéo ! Merci ! Vive l’Angleterre ! Pays du sport auto ! De France 😜….
Couldn’t understand a damn thing, way too much Backround noise what did you go to a Construction site for this

Fantastic cars from the golden era...but dont mention 'ealth n safety...🎉❤
Yes I was there too! Not only the sights but the different engine notes and the pervading smell of castor R in the days before synthetic lube The cars were full of technical interest too , electronics definitely not the deciding factor factor
13:19: Another story of a car in which multiple drivers were killed goes back of few years before this era. Floyd Roberts won the 1938 Indy 500. In 1939, he died in a crash ( which I think this was a different car than the 1938 one, but can't totally confirm it) at Indy. The car was restored and sold to Cliff Bergere but was inactive for several years mostly due to World War Two. George Robson won the 1946 Indy 500, driving in a one off for Joel Thorne. Thorne did not race his cars on dirt, so after the race Robson signed with Bergere to run his car to finish out the season. In September, Robson was killed in a crash at Lakewood Park Speedway in Atlanta. Considering it to be a cursed car, Bergere then took a torch to the remains.
This is quite true it's also for certain sure and his old driver Aaron dare Carlos Minos those fort isms
Brands Hatch , an extrodirary race❤😢🎉
Chaparral were faster than GT40?
Thanks for this video. I just ordered the book from Octane Press. Regarding AJ's crash at Riverside, I know I've seen a video of Parnelli describing how he pulled a wad of dirt from the mouth of an unconscious AJ. As Parnelli described it, this occurred when AJ was on a gurney outside the infield hospital and presumed to be dead.
Ok, I must have misremembered! The video I could find doesn't include Parnelli claiming as I stated but instead features a narrator telling of how Parnelli saved AJ. Perhaps the video is the source of the myth, or at least contributed to it. th-cam.com/video/gxLxQuRmKmM/w-d-xo.html Also, on p. 137 of his 2012 biography, Parnelli states that he ran to the scene of the accident and witnessed the safety crew pull a gray-faced AJ from the car and get him breathing again!
What a great video! 👍🏿
Thanks for watching!
Ten shillings per ticket, am I reading that right?
It mystifies me to this day how the Jim Hall Chaparral team got financing to compete in the entire series of endurance races for 1967. Especially so to venture to the Targa Florio race on the island of Sicily. Aside from Firestone Tires and Shell Oil, where did the financing come from? Chevrolet (ahem!) _vehemently denied_ any involvement in motorsports after the 1963 Daytona 500 debacle. Development and fabrication of the one-off 2F race car didn't come cheap, unlike the Lola T70 coupe of that era that were sold to customers. Porsche and Ferrari had its automotive sales divisions to finance the race cars development and expenses for racing. Even with the massive financial resources Ford had that year for racing, their official entries was at Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans.
Great video
Mario@2:53?
Wonderful stuff.
5:55 the MGB. Wheres the 107% quali rule? And i had to replay the pit exit at 7:56. Life when common sense was used and not endless H+S rules.
I see a Chaparral in the mix.
Absolutely wonderful... once my ears recovered from the landing Jet during the opening.. hahaha
Also nice to see the Ferrari 330P4, surely the most beautiful sports racer ever made. Mauro Forghieri (who is briefly seen in the video during a pit stop) always regarded it as his favourite creation.
Endurance racing is better than any other racing, bite me.
A great race. I was in the crowd that day - makes me feel old. The throttle cable of my Fiat 500 snapped on the way home. I ran some fishing line from the carb, through the louvres on the boot and over the roof, then down through the sunroof. It was a bit elastic, but with only 21 bhp it hardly mattered.
I'm glad you liked it, such memories. Thank you
Groovy Baby! The Golden Age of car racing.
i wonder what Auto gearbox the Americans used in the chaperall back then maybe a turbo 400 with a manual valve body.
My first race as a Trucky was at Brands back in 1984 with a Group C Lola T 610...... Where I took out the timing equipment in the timing tower!!! Long story...... But it lead to a 27 year career in Motor Racing ending up at Mclaren ...... Great memories....... And LOTS of stories...... :-))) xx
Thanks for posting this excellent coverage. A classic from the days of Ford v Ferrari, with the slippery Porsches and high-winged Chaparrals adding to the fun! 🎉
I was there that day, aged 16, and travelled by train and bus to get there. I watched the whole race at Clearways, just by the pit entrance. When the race ended, the whole crowd along the pit straight hopped over the fence, down the bank and on to the track as the winner came round on his slowing down lap. I'd never seen that before and, slightly guiltily, my friend and I joined. I still have the photo of Phil Hill I took. It was his last race and Mike Spence was killed the following year at Indianapolis.
It's a shame today's F1 drivers don't drive in WEC events. I saw these cars at Sebring earlier that year, 1967 -- won by Andretti/McLaren in the Ford Mk IV. Finishing second was Foyt/Ruby in a Ford Mk IIB. Spectators back then had startling unrestriced access to the pits.
@@HAL9007 Yes, they should race in the WEC. :)
This is a Cultural Classic. 1967 was my favorite year for F1 -- the best looking cars from that year -- Lotus 49, Ferrari 312, Eagle Mk I. No decals, advertising or wings. Just pure, functional beauty. World Sports Car Championship cars were also beautiful. My first attendance was in 1967 at Canadian Grand Prix (Mosport Park) and Sebring. Any uphill, right-turn hairpin reminds me of Mosport.
@HAL9007 1967 is my favourite year for F1, too. Thanks to Grand Prix Legends AKA GPL, the best game ever made. I also love 1976, 1991, 1997 and of course 1989. :)
Nice to get a glimpse of the unmistakable beard of Denis Jenkinson.
You spotted him too! One of the greatest motor racing journalists ever. Always used to love his reports in Motor Sport which I still read today.
Agree, Denis was a great ambassador
Also good to see an actor playing him in the movie "Ferrari", when he and Moss, highly favoured to win the 1957 Mille Miglia after their famous success in Mercedes 722 in 1955, were stymied when the Maserati's brake pedal broke off. Moss apparently went around the next corner virtually on two wheels and Jenks wagged a disapproving finger at him, as if to say, "Bit early to take such chances". In reply, Moss reached down and held up the brake pedal. And that was the end of the Mille Miglia after Portago's tragic accident.
ColoUr!!
Groovy, baby!
Excellent!
I was at the 1968 BOAC watching the race at the BRDA enclosure when slowly everything slowly went quite apart from the racing as news of Jim Clarks demise came in, I guess someone had a portable radio and the news was passed mouth to mouth. at 18 I found it hard to understand how such a great driver could have been killed
Formidable témoignage sur les sixties . Miniskirts, rockandroll and James Bond car for the winers.
