Tim Pierce @timpierceguitar shows the Karma ODR-10, a clone of one of his own Nobels ODR-1 pedals from the early 1990s. Tim encouraged me, over the course of a year, to make this pedal as a much less expensive alternative to the originals, selling now for $2,000 and more. After many tweaks and multiple prototypes, we both feel the Karma ODR-10 nails the sound and feel of his original. An added ...

Sound examples of the Karma MTN-10, a pedal from Karma Guitar Amplifiers. The MTN-10 is our vision of the venerable Ibanez Mostortion of the early 80’s. By utilizing the original CA3060 chip, superior quality parts, sturdy construction, and true bypass, we’ve created a killer overdrive! The 3-band tone stack renders a wide range of subtle to radical tones. And, it’s a perfect companion to our K...

Mine just arrived and Wow, this pedal exceeded my expectations. I am VERY picky about ODs. I could not get on with the green side of the Protien, also inspired by the ODR-1, but there was ultimately a harshness I couldn’t get past. There is nothing harsh about the Karma ODR-10. It’s about as natural, and organic of a gain sound as I’ve ever experienced from an OD pedal. I got a great sound out of it immediately.
So glad you like it - thanks for posting!
@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967Thanks for making a great product! Likely going to order a MTN-10. I’ve been eyeing a good Mostortion circuit for years and I hear it stacks very well with the ODR-10 👀
I’m trying to categorize this pedal in the spectrum. Would you characterize it as a flat eq, medium gain OD? 🤔
People use it in many ways, but personally I like it as a low to medium gain OD. The 3-band EQ gives you many options from relatively "flat" to drastic cut/boost.
Listen back to your own video, you'll be surprised how different they are
Call me crazy but I hear a big difference
same. Karma is darker
The latest version of the AnalogMan King of Tone can be run with 18V power, which provides a little more max volume and noticeably less compression / more clean headroom. The more open sound is very pleasant to my ears. I think you are experiencing the same thing here. Modern op amps can run from even higher voltage, but the limiting factor is usually the voltage rating on any electrolytic capacitors. Also you don't want to smoke the input circuitry on the next pedal with a super hot audio signal.
Personally a big fan of Tim and John Jorgenson. More-so than other Nobels players.
In my opinion, I can hear a difference, as clear as day. The original is way more full and fatter.
Which means it won't cut.
Test EVERY CAP for polarity, even if marked for polarity. I find mismarked caps all the time.
I had a silver Nobels ODR-1 from the 2000's and then suffered through a house fire and lost many things including that pedal. I was extremely disappointed to see how outrageous the things are pricing. I just want my pedal back.
I wonder how close the Wampler clone is.
Not 100% nor was it meant to be

Is Tim playing the Line Boost into the ODR 10? It sounds wonderful and full.
As Buc says the screamer has too much clean tone coming through it. ODR10 sounds great.
Are there any karma pedals retailers in the EU?
Yes! I recently had to stop shipping internationally - too many lost pedals, long delays, stuck in customs, returned to me, etc. I now have two dealers outside of the US. TGT11.com in Sweden is one. I also have a new dealer in the Netherlands: PedalTown.nl I'm also trying to enlist more dealers outside of the US so any suggestions you have are much appreciated! Greg
Love my ODR-10, it sounds way better than my mini ORD-1 and one with the bass cut. It really works great with the gain turned up into any amp. You really need to get one of these into Bukovac's hands and have Pete Thorn demo it!
You should compare the two pedals using the same 18v power. The Nobel will sound better and louder with a 18v power supply.
That's a good idea! I'm fairly certain that would be safe but wouldn't want to do it with Tim's, which is shipping back to him this week anyway.
Actually the 18v power supply is also recommanded for the Nobel screamer@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967
I stumbled upon the original Nobels pedals by accident when they first came out in '93 - Before the Nashville crowd caught on. I own several, they all sound different (some fantastic) and they're all gonna' have issues at some point. Sooo looking forward to trying this one!
I’m gonna need both 😊
I got the ODR-10 as soon as Greg announced it, since I already had the MTN-10 which is a fantastic pedal too. I love the ODR-10, to me it does the ODR-1 thing but with "more"! My ODR-1 mini and ODR-1 BC sound muffled and dull compared to the ODR-10. I used the ODR-1's mainly as a clean boost, but the ODR-10 can do that but also sounds great when you turn up the drive!
You did. a great thing Greg. Glad Tim's happy. I'm loving it and it stacks unbelievably with the MNT-10 into it. I need to try 18v
Thanks Joe! I posted this re 18v: "A couple of you have asked me about running the ODR-10 on 18v vs 9v. I know Tim Pierce is running his at 18v, but he hasn't really A/B'd it at 9v. I did some testing: > Running it at 18v is fine, the circuit can handle it > At 18v there is a roughly 1db dip in the low end starting at ~200hz. That may make the pedal sound brighter and a touch more "open". I don't find the difference dramatic, but YMMV; it doesn't hurt to try both!"
@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967 thanks that’s good to know. I’m using a Strymon 500ma 9 volt tap from iso supply currently and it’s going well. Using live tomorrow.
Just received the ODR-10 - from a store in Sweden - and, man, the transparency of this OD pedal is simply amazing! Raunchy if you want it and sweet as honey if that's your fancy. I'd already got a Noble Screamer and had decided beforehand that I'd keep my favorite... Well, A/B'ed with my Tele thru a Tone King Imperial amp the ODR-10 is just that much sweeter in the lower mids...so it's a keeper indeed!!
I have to say that the MTN is very smoothit gets country all the way to the Steely Dan sound. Happy it is a part of my rig.
Here's an updated Soundcloud clip of Rob McNelley playing through this pedal: on.soundcloud.com/zvdhE
I’ve been playing mine and it’s incredible. It’s so refreshing to have something new that sounds so good, and that can’t be replicated with one of my other OD’s. I’ve had a few the high end ODR1 clones and this one is in a different league.
Where I can watch the full video?
The video came from one of his Masterclass live streams, so you'd have to enroll to see it.
@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967 hey Gregg if you make a demo video side by side with the og Nobels will be amazing for your coming
Honestly, it's in the works but I've been swamped with the "business" side of this! @@rcleon1431
Just got my pedal today, and wow. You guys didn’t just nail it, you may have surpassed it! I don’t remember my old Nobels sounding this good! This thing sounds incredible! For anyone reading this and wanting details on my rig, here you go: 90% of the time I’m running a Super or a Pro Reverb, drip edge models and earlier (‘64-‘69). I can’t speak for any other amps, but with my Blackface/Drip Edge Silverface amps, this pedal stacks perfectly with the Karma MTN-10 (Ibanez Mostortion clone), because it has the 3-band EQ that allows me cut a little bass at higher gain levels. As you know, Tim, when you start to crank up Blackface Fenders, they get increasingly “woofy” and loose in the bottom end, but the MTN-10’s 3-band EQ can cut a little or all of the low end out, depending on where the part needs to sit in the mix. I’m actually running the MTN in front of the ODR, which I thought would be the other way around, but the MTN is so great at the slight breakup tones, that I can take advantage of the ODRs gloriously fat overdrive to handle my mild to medium overdrive duties. Stacking them gets me to medium + gain levels, then I use a Crowther Hot Cake for the heavy/light fuzz distortion category. As a matter of fact, I use the MTN-10 to goose the Hot Cake also, and poke its insanely thick distortion tones through the mix as well! That said, I haven’t found a bad tone in this thing. Even if I had to run the ODR-10 alone in a high gain situation, I could run the Bass on my amp at zero and achieve similarly great results. I can’t thank you and Greg enough for taking on these projects. These two pedals will never leave my board!

Hey Tim, what's the differences between the Karma MTN-10 and the Karma ODR-10?
Hi Bill, I'm not sure Tim monitors this, so I'll answer for you. They are very different circuits; the MTN-10 models an Ibanez Mostortion and the ODR-10 models an early 1990s Nobels ODR-1. I think of the MTN circuit as more of a low to mid gain pedal - it even does almost-cleans pretty well and I think of it a bit like a Blackface amp whereas the ODR circuit may lean more towards Tweed with its great classic rock lead tones. Hope that helps!
Thanks Tim!🎸
It's actually Greg from Karma, and you're welcome!@@bill.clifford.59
@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967 Hey Greg, you absolutely nailed the Mostortion with your MTN-10! LOVE this thing! Signing up for your Karma ODR-10.

Ordered this as soon as I was notified it was coming out! Can't wait to get it in my hands and hear it!!
Whats your thoughts on the new keeley noble screamer pedal? Combining odr1 and ts?
I'm sure it's great! I personally like pedals that do one thing really well.
I've liked every video I've seen from demos of these pedals. I need one!! lol
Sweet
You do know that toggle switches connect the middle and opposite terminal on the switch I hope? If it's pointing to the right that means the middle and left terminal are connected. I wonder how many people have built this and wrongly identified the foil end of the cap because of this?
Excellent point, David! I guess I assumed that anyone building this would know that, but it's an important point and I appreciate you bringing it up... thanks!
Nicely done
I just did this last night with an amp and an input jack. It worked, but this is easier. Wish I found it sooner. Thanks. I will be making one.
Ha ha…when the Telecaster bridge pickup came in I’m thinking wow Greg had the money to hire Joe Walsh for this video 😂
Well, I pretty much grew up (musically and locally) with Joe and toured with him many years ago. So I guess you could say he was a huge influence! That's probably what drew me to this circuit in the first place - it reminds me of what his tone was back in his club days...
I just got mine a few weeks ago and I'm just scratching the scratch on the surface of what this extraordinary pedal can do. So versatile, so smartly designed and constructed. Fantastic job Greg!!
Thank you Paul - so glad you like it!
No mid hump like tube screamer correct?
That is correct - it's not a TS circuit at all...
Awesome job Greg!!! Sounds spot on...only better!
Thank you Alexander - I love hearing feedback like this!
Simple and easy, thanks!!
Nice but I prefer my scope, it is way more obvious and pleasant to use.
How do you do this with an oscciloscope? I have a dso but can't find any information on how to set up the scope.
@@jeeplvr2000 Here is a good video about it : th-cam.com/video/BnR_DLd1PDI/w-d-xo.html Basics of using a scope starts at 8:07. It is very important you set it with the smallest volt by division you can get and it should be at least as low as 5 milli Volts / division. If you can't get as low as 5 milli Volts you wont be able to see the noise, 2 milli Volts is the sweet spot.
Scope is better but not everyone has a scope
What about caps that don't make noise in either orientation? I've got a bunch of caps I've tried to identify. O-scope, amp input, amp input with a fuzz pedal. None of the caps I have tested make more noise in one direction over the other. In fact they hardly make any noise at all and that's with the amp cranked.
Ian - I'm not sure what kind of caps you're checking, but assuming your testing methods are correct I'd say you don't have a problem!
@@karmaguitaramplifiers7967 The caps are what's usually found in a guitar amp. Mallory, Sprague, Orange Drops, etc. I've just recently took up building tube guitar amps and trying to identify the foil end of these coupling caps has been driving me batty.
@@ianaintsaying1625 They all got a polarity and make noise if used backwards. Noise being at least visible with an oscilloscope. If you can't see it on a scope it may be because you do the test wrong, for exemple you must keep the cap body between your fingers cause if you keep it hanging by probe's end without touching the body then it wont generate noise. th-cam.com/video/BnR_DLd1PDI/w-d-xo.html
@@ianaintsaying1625 Ian, if you've just started building I wouldn't worry too much about this. I know of several high end boutique amp builders that don't bother with it at all.
@@Bloodysugar I would build this if I were younger. My eyes are too old to work with surface mount circuits. If there is a thru-hole version I'd be all over it.
Fantastic demo. Really enjoyed how you put the pedal tones in context with a song. Very classy!!!!

GREAT . . . Thanks . . . Just plug it into the XLR input jack of my DAW. What is my DAW ? If DAW is what I think it is, I know I don't have one. So I'm back to square one.
You can plug the 1/4" output into your guitar amp and listen for the difference in hum, just know that the difference may be hard to discern with some caps. That's why I use a DAW (digital audio workstation - Pro Tools in this case) to visualize the difference. That and I'm not a big fan of listening to hum while doing a bunch of caps.
Other solution : 20$ numeric pocket oscilloscope = very obvious noise waves and no need to listen to hum.
@@Bloodysugar Huh? what is a 20$ numeric pocket oscilloscope? And how would such a device be a "solution" . . . ? . . . to anything? I have an oscilloscope. My problem is/was: the location of the noise (in the capacitor) is not identifiable. The object is to identify the correct "side" of the capacitor BEFORE inserting it into the circuit. Because I've got 3 amps to work on, this would be a sorting method . . . Do you understand now? Because your reply doesn't indicate that you grasp the situation, or are able to construct a logical sentence. [["noise waves" . . . indeed. isn't all sound a wave, and isn't every sound a noise? ]]. You're blowing shit out your ass.
Can I buy the tools to determine the outside foil of capacitor?
Sorry, no - we don't make the switch box shown here for sale.
Wow man! Do these Karma amp kit amps go to 11? Nice to see a new product hitting the music market. Haven't been satisfied with the old, stodgy amps. Last great amp [and technician] until now was JB Labs [Akron, Ohio] back in the 60's......
