In this comparison test the contribution from the turbo inlet elbow is reduced to better compare the flow performance of the intakes. The intakes consist of the air duct, airbox, air filter, and inlet hose. The modified stock GTI airbox flows surrisingly well compared to the Blaze ATOM Race V2. mygolfmk7.com/2024/07/blaze-atom-vs-stock-airbox-surprising-results/

Turbo Inlet Pipe Install - IS20 and IS38
I ended up switching from blaze to r600 :) thanks to you. One thing that you don't take into account of the testing, is just how much shit does the filer passthrough and with that setup what blaze has, I think it much bigger passtrhrough of dust/particles vs others.
You're welcome! That is correct that particle filtration is not accounted for in the testing that I conduct. I've looked into how that testing is conducted following the ISO 5011 Standard and it is beyond what I'm capable of, or willing to pay a qualified organization to test for me. I agree that it's an important consideration, and one reason I choose a Vibrant air filter for the intake I'm designing instead of a less expensive no-name brand.
Great work ! Love the detail and video length.
Thanks!
Good stuff man, I've been reading plenty on your website from back when I had the Mk7s (did a twin-cooler on one of them), and now again that we got the Mk8 Golf R. Lots of misinformation out there for sure, glad to find someone who does some legit testing.
Thanks!
Do you have the turbo inlet as well?
I do use an aftermarket inlet elbow, although I have a few and I tend to swap between them depending on what I'm doing and what other parts are on the car.
When is the intake you're developing go into production? I want one
I don't have an estimate for when I'll be done. Hopefully sooner rather than later. It's been a side project that I work on sporadically and therefore hasn't been moving along very quickly. I'm still trying variations to the design to see how they affect flow performance, and I want to also address keeping the intake air cool, which I've not begun to investigate yet.
@mygolfmk7209 I'll be looking forward to it l!
Jeff, I really appreciate all your work on the mk7 platform. Your website is an invaluable resource for owners and enthusiasts. The data and analysis presented have been very helpful in planning my own build. I was disappointed to learn that 034 was not willing to submit their ECU software to your testing. Consequently, I will be switching to a Stratified tune. I had been running 034 due to the perception that they offered a relatively “safe” tune (but who knows without verification?). According to 034’s TH-cam channel, they don’t defeat any of the OEM safety measures, which after viewing your analysis likely means not raising the knock retard threshold like EQT or SneakyTune does. Like COBB, this results in a little less power compared to other tunes, but I figured was worth it for better reliability. However, I thought it was interesting that Stratified achieves more power without numbing the knock retard either. I wonder if this evidences a more skilled tuning capability by Stratified than say EQT or SneakyTuned who do numb the knock retard (assumedly, in exchange for more power). Perhaps that’s an easier way to achieve more power, but there are risks.
Thanks for the feedback! Sorry for the delay in responding, I've not done well with following up on the content I post on TH-cam. I believe numbing the knock sensors is a simple approach to addressing the issues that arise when increasing power output, and gives consumers a false impression that they are making power safely. My guess is that choosing to raise the knock threshold is primarily done for marketing reasons.
Much respect for putting this kind of content out there for us MK7 guys.
Thank you!
So what turbo inlet and intake combo do recommend? I currently have the stock IS20 but eventually going to is38
There are quite a few options that are very similar in how they perform. With a stock turbo I don't think you can go wrong with any one that is in the top half of the performance standings. Even then, if you have some other criteria that is important to you that would be what I suggest you use for making your decision.
Very interesting research! I enjoy this type of video a lot.
Thanks!
@@mygolfmk7209 I've been reflecting about this since I saw the video, do you think that the knock values on the more aggressive tunes (Sneaky, EQT) were affected by the fact that they recommend colder plugs? Do you think that the results would've been the same with the recommended plugs or did you do the dyno/pulls with different plugs for these tunes? It still doesn't change the fact that the knock sensors treshold is modified but I am curious to see if this changes anything.
@@RSXengineering I had 2 step colder plugs installed while comparing these tunes.
Is it a good idea to run a bov? I know these cars dont have mafs in em but i didnt know if there were any downsides? Looking to get one especially since its a good bit louder than just the spacer
There's no downside to the electronically controlled pneumatically actuated valve that I could find. It's a valve that opens and shuts similar to the stock diverter valve.
Forge sounds better but is 100% atmospheric, which makes your car run worse unless it’s tuned to account for the unmetered air. Diverter spacer allows some air to return so it honestly is the better choice of you’re keeping a stock tune
The Mk7 uses a speed density system, so there is no "metered air", that is a reference to a measurement made with a mass airflow sensor, which the Mk7 does not have. A DV spacer accomplishes the same thing as a VTA BOV, redirecting the discharge air outside of the intake.
That’s the info I am looking for. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing your in depth testing on all the parts you do on your site! The entire community benefits from the effort you go through to test and share your findings.
Thank you!
Was that bov in a wreck or something? Lol
Not that I am aware of.
It's interesting - I would love to hear the tuners responses to the change in threshold. Without knowing much about KR, I could see that with the other variables changes, there would need to be some changes to the threshold to avoid "noise" caused by the other changes. As in, are they perhaps safely addressing false knock created by bumping up boost, timing, etc?
Increasing boost and timing are a couple methods for increasing the cylinder pressure, which is what leads to more power. I'll be putting up a post tomorrow (4/8/24) that shows the effect of adding some E85 to the Stratified Revised tune. That tune had a bunch more KR than the OTS tune, so if there is just more noise, and no more knock, the amount of KR will remain the same.
Thank you so much for the information. As an aviation technician who has worked in the research and development side of things, I know how important it is to have data instead of guessing. May I ask you, which stock mounted intercooler you'd recommend. I went to your website and the amount of data is great, but I felt overwhelmed.
For the weight, airflow and thermal management, these are your very best options: APR DO88 Mishimoto Unitronic This is verifiable not just with Jeff’s website, but by reading through hundreds of threads in the Mk7 community where folks living in brutally hot climates were able to keep their power output and IATs consistent and in a safe range. 👍
It depends a bit on your application. I've been using the AMS IC a good deal because it cools very well. I also like the APR IC. I think the difference between almost all of the stock location options is negligible for an IS20 or IS38 application.
Thank you for your research. Greetings from Brazil
You're welcome!
thanks for sharing your findings! Those Knock sensor changes in some of the tunes are quite interesting! Def. very useful info when deciding what tunes to go with.
You're welcome, thanks for the feedback!
Nice! Ty
You're welcome!
What's the best combo you've tried to date? Stratified ecu and dsg tune?
Stratified offers custom tuning for the DSG. That's what I have done.
what your exhaust setup? and is this with the blue ring forge dv
Baun DP and mid-pipe with AWE exhaust. I'm not familiar with what the blue ring entails. To my knowledge this is the standard vent to atmosphere BOV that Forge offers for the Mk7.
If your so good why don’t you tune it yourself and why don’t you have a performance shop if your tests are sooo valid?
Hey Greg. I do use HP Tuners to do my own tuning. As I mention on the website, I work as a test engineer, so this is just a hobby to do quick, low cost tests. I do some testing on behalf of performance shops, but I enjoy the testing I do in my line of work. I'm not sure what you mean by "sooo valid"? Testing, especially what I'm doing, has inherent uncertainty which I try to express by describing the processes and showing results so readers can make up their own mind about whether or not they want to agree with my conclusions.
Did Ed send you here?
I've seen mixed sounds with the ECS DV spacer some get the Stututut sound and some get the Whoosh sound? In a comment someone mentions having the open slots Orientated towards the top and Front of car to get the Stututut sound. If slots are facing Top and back you get the Whoosh sound. But on ECS install it shows indents so there's only one way to install this. Unless I'm not seeing something. Another rumor is only Manual cars get the Stututut, while DSG can only Whoosh. Have you tested different orientation of the ECS DV spacer? Is there a loss in boost when installing one of these?
having the same issue man running a dualkompact bov and a turbo muffler delete only get swooshes this guy i talk to said use a dv spacer if this doesn’t work i’m positive a hks bov will do the trick look them up they sound awsome
Yeah I just got my ecs spacer and it only does the whoosh, the guy that had the turbo flutter did have a tune and an intake, could that have something to do with it?
The orientation of the slots should not matter since the Stututu sound is caused by air in the compressor wheel. I've only tried these parts on a DSG. One possibility that I've not reached a conclusion on yet is the manner in which the ECU closes the throttle plate on a Manual vs DSG. If the throttle plate is closed slowly after letting off the accelerator then the air pressurizing the charge pipes would be able to still enter the engine, at the same time it is escaping out the DV, so that could prevent air from going back out through the compressor wheel and making the stututu sound. If the manual ECU shuts the throttle plate more quickly, it may be more likely to have air pass out the compressor. I haven't seen a good comparison for how the ECU closes the throttle plate on a DSG and Manual, so that's just a theory.
thanks for the explanation with graphs
You are welcome!
Love the way the Forge BOV sounds. Thanks for the video
Dare I ask, how's eco mode shifting?
D and S are the only options, there isn't an ECO mode.
Can you link to the tuning software you're using? Your philosophy is like mine- I want a mild/fuel efficient drive, and more aggressive sport mode
I'm using a Stratified DSG tune. Keep in mind that I have the GTI DQ250 transmission, and different transmissions will shift differently. www.stratifiedauto.com/
Proper dsg tune in 7gti its very importent, because long gear ratio, most in drive mode.
I agree that the DSG tune can make a big difference in how the car drives.
Hello Jeff! Love all your mk7 parts reviews! I’m recently in market of an intercooler for my mk7.5 golf r. Which one are you running right now? I’m looking at a CTS IC(700CAD), IEv2(1450cad)and Wagner(1400). Which one should I go for? CTS is the cheapest but your tests showed there isn’t a significant improvement over the OEM ones. thanks!
😅 P-R-O-M-O-S-M!!
As "cool" as they look, the design seems to have one too many flaws.
Thanks Jeff, you played key part in deciding on the Hardware selection onf my STG 2 mk7 R
