    Nice, am I'm from Vancouver Island and there's some words in the general culture there from Chinook it's interesting to see the pre-Confederation fur trading culture stay alive! Interesting how the Canadian border didn't make it down to the Columbia river, unite Chinook Wawa. Am personally extremely glad as a BCer that the American 5440 or Fight slogan didn't happen. Love the early fur trade history as a Canadian and Metis person. Also, I dislike the term the "pacific northwest". The northwest of what? The USA? Not even the northwest of the continent. BC is the pacific southwest of Canada. It was Columbia or New Caledonia, this western fur trade region run by the HBC and other fur trading companies. Also, I'm curious how you justify saying that the "fulness of the language only took place between indian to indian", as it seems wrong to me unless you count the Métis in that category, as they are basically an ethnicity that arose alongside such languages creating a new culture on the basis of having one foot in each community often and often working for the HBC. Intermarriage was banned in the USA but not in pre-Confederation Canada so it gave rise to this context of the Métis peoples, Washington state before it was conceded to the USA was also part of the British colony of Columbia as you know. After Washington state was ceded to the US, American politicians blamed the Metis for the trying to influence chiefs to not sign treaties with the USA.

    I look back now and wish they would have taught this in school to us.... even if we were white kids. If for no other reason than that we lived here.
