Simon finds vintage computers and 80's retro games to restore and preserve. On this channel you'll see videos of what he finds each week.
I've been collecting and building vintage computers since the 1980's. Even though I am considered an expert, I don't claim to know everything about computers. Because of this, I frequently recommend other people who specialize in particular topics, that can help you as well.
Whether you’re Gen X, who grew up with classics like the Commodore 64, Atari 2600, or Nintendo NES, or a new enthusiast discovering the retro gaming, this channel is for you. If you're new - collecting can be challenging, but don't worry - I'm here to help!
I showcase rare finds, deep-dive restorations, and behind-the-scenes tours of a curated collection spanning the 80s and 90s. From retro tech setups and iconic games to hard-to-find collectibles, I'll explore the stories, history, and magic that made these items.

Commodore 64 Unboxing | Mint Condition Garage Find 1987
มุมมอง 22014 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I pick up a Commodore 64C that has been stored in a box in a garage since the 1980's. As I open the box I find a mint-condition Commodore disk drive with a cool brown cover. Also included is a Commodore 1802 monitor, which has now been fully restored to working condition. This is a dream find for me, because a lot of the Commodores are typically well used and the chips are fried....

Vintage Computers & Retro Games Studio - Behind the Scenes!
Fabulous presentation Simon.
Thanks @chookin1 - a lot of work went into that studio. Its now my 3rd. Fingers crossed that this one survives! No more flooding.
Those are so damn awesome man. I'm so jealous!@!. Any interest on selling either? Cheers :D
@bot_pepper.4029 - both boxes were holes in my collection. The Doom trilogy was a grail find for me. I had the other Duke 3d but not this version. Just very very lucky. Have not seen anything this good since.
How good! Nice find! 🙌🏻
Thanks @macmuseum - could not have dreamed this up!
It works. It's just not set up properly. It will need some troubleshooting. Main possibilities in my opinion are that (as you suspect) the video settings are wrong. It could also be bios deres. It could be that there is no disk installed in the floppy drive. It will need a bootable disc at some point. There is also the chance that a ram stick failed. If you have one, you can swap out the video card for a more modern vga card and monitor counterpart just to test the box is working. Swapping ram and getting a boot floppy would also be a good step. After as long as I have been fiddling with this stuff, somethings you just ruin on instinct with. Bottom line is that I'm gonna say it's perfectly alive and kicking. You just need to teach it how to talk to you again.
Wow! What a find! Good price too.
@aussie_retro_dude9253 - yeah great price. They have to make a bit of money out of it and I'm happy to do that all day long! 🙂
Re-watching this video, I just realized that's an IDE hard drive... even if it is a Miniscribe, that's pretty awesome for an 8088. I would expect to see an MFM drive, and those are getting extremely hard to find (in Canada, at least).
@altscott I didn't realise this at the time either! Good pick up. I googled the model number and its definitely IDE. I found a scanned brochure for it. Will replace the batteries after Christmas and see what I can do about getting it running again. I can't find any MFM hard drives in Australia either. At least not reliable ones.
Beautiful restoration... I used one of these back in the early 1990's. You might want to check that power supply for RIFA capacitors though. If I'm not mistaken, some of the old Apples used them. They make a god-awful stench when they fail.
@altscott - yes been down that road with my Apple Europlus and it blew. I think I'm starting to get a backlog of caps to replace and hard drives to find !
I was an NEC authorised engineer for those machines, and have extensive experience with them. Personally I'd murder you for it were it not illegal to do so :). To see one still around today, in Australia (I'm in Melbourne) pleases me immensely, even with those annoying non-magnetic chassis screws. Two beeps on those machines means nothing other than a CMOS checksum mismatch - hardly the end of the world. Banging "F1" has a good chance of skipping past it, though it might not boot from the HDD. Based on the sound alone I'd bet the hard drive is an NEC D5126 20MB drive. Absolutely bloody bulletproof, and that one is running 35 years later does not surprise me in the slightest. Back then almost any AT BIOS utility could write to the CMOS and correct the CMOS checksum - it was only later on that extended CMOS added other boondongles: custom drive types was not a thing on the APCIV/1 machines. Send me a PM message if you want more information, and I'll see what I can find. This was the first NeAT chipset machine NEC made, and the first that was actually useful (the APC3 machines were not) - and as you've already noticed, they were incredibly solidly built, in a way you just don't see these days.My resources for this gear may not what they once were, but my knowledge is not.
Bummer. I hate you didn't get the NEC monitor! Glad you got the computer, though. I agree that, whenever possible, certain pieces of hardware should remain together. This is one of those cases.
@BollingHolt - yeah I can't believe someone would take the monitor and leave the actual computer! I hope whoever got it, puts it up on marketplace or sees this video and lets me know. I'd like to reunite it. Now to find a monitor that will work with it.... and resolve those switches.
She needs a little love, but this computer is definitely worth saving. I would pull that battery out immediately though. It is probably leaking.
@altscott - yes. Good advice! Will do.
@@RetroRarez Great work btw - It's always good to see a new retro-channel!
@@altscott thanks. Its a lot of work with editing etc.. but given I find stuff every week and preserve what I can.... its nice to document what I'm doing... and if people like it, then its a bonus!
It looks like you connected a monochrome TTL screen to that EGA card. It probably won't work out of the box like that. Was likely configured for the NEC multisync monitor You might be able to configure that EGA to output in MDA mode with those dip switches though.
Hey @canthearu4876 - yes it was the monitor from that Commodore video I did a few weeks ago. I didn't actually notice the switches until after I turned it on. I have another NEC multisync, but later model with a different set of pins. Hope to find the original Multisync or some other generic monitor that will work. Still looking around for the manual for that card. Had a similar issue with the Amstrad laptop. Argh displays !!!!
If it is a true multi-sync monitor, you should be able to find a pinout for both the monitor and your standard ttl (DB-9) and vga (DB-15) and create converter cables for both of them to work on that multi-sync monitor. Otherwise you can always drop a VGA ISA card into the NEC computer for testing. Good luck, and nice system. Rare to see such systems turn up in near completely stock state.
Great suggestion@@canthearu4876. Will absolutely give that a go. Future video. ;-)
I'll absolutely do another video of trying to get this vintage computer to work. I don't even know the specs (it was not even detailed on the purchase order! From memory I think its a 286 with 640k of RAM, but I could be wrong about it. Ideally I'd like to get that NEC Multisync II monitor back. So whoever bought it, I'd be interested if you wanted to flip it.
Can this computer run Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows 95?
@aldwinpanny10 - its prior to all those. It runs MSDOS.
my first experience pc XT...it was awesome and still have this .
Ahh yes @dipankarbose5933 you never forget it !!
Now I wish that I had seen the listing!
I had one of those.. spent many hours waiting for games to load😆
Another REALLY nice find! May your good luck keep coming!
Thanks @BollingHolt - I was amazed that things like this are still out there. He certainly took good care of it.
Better than gold!
@philpots48 - That monitor was gold !!! I've never had that model, so was incredibly happy to add it to the collection. Having a clean 64C is also good. The brown drive cover was pretty funny. It wasn't long ago that I found that other XT with the plastic cover on it, so it reminded me of that.
Impressed you got this. I don't seem to have much luck with FB Marketplace. Far far far far too many scams and scammers in my experience.
Hey @josephphillips9243 - Oh yeah! I should actually start posting the scams I've avoided. So many of those around right now. I've nearly been taken for a ride, but then when you look at their profile, you quickly learn they are not who they say they are! The other thing is dealing with people who say "oh yeah it works", then you test it and it doesn't. So quite often I walk away. Sometimes I give them a price for it not working, which factors in my time and parts to fix it. But I try not to do that, as its not worth my time and hassle.
This video is a bit rough. I wasn't originally going to post it, but I did, in the spirit of "keeping it real". This was literally me, holding my camera and filming this at the time I first opened it up. Sometimes I miss opportunities like this, and forget to film, so I wanted to get this out there, because it shows that these things are still around! I've never had the 1802 monitor before, so very happy to add it to my collection.
"See DOS. See DOS run. Quick, quick, quick" never saw that manual, cool :)
I still can hear the background music
Yeah @alisharifian535 love this game.
I chucked away a Tulip computer 386sx last year ,it was sitting on top on a server cabinet in a comms room still running along witha monochrome monitor. It wasn't connected to anything and had probably been sitting on that cabinet powered up doing nothing for over a decade. It's been years since I saw an XT computer or 286.
@roasthunter oh wow. Wonder if it had anything on it? Got to love those mysterious machines that nobody knows about, that have been sitting there for decades. Just had one of my 286's repaired yesterday. So going to give it a test - probably with Alleycat if I can find it!
@ I did try rebooting it after taking it down from the rack it was sitting on and it came up with an error so I suspect the battery was long dead. My first pc was a 386dx40 which I bought in about 1991 and I literally threw the motherboard and memory in the bin about 15 years ago when I moved house, I wish I hadn’t now as it has some good memories but at the time I just needed to clear the house out and didn’t care much for this old stuff. I would dread moving now, I have so much stuff but I’m often conflicted on keeping stuff as it often sits unused collecting dust and think I might be better off selling it.
So no battery? How is time date stored?
@JoCrt I literally have no idea about it. Was searching for one, but maybe I'm blind and cant see it. Will need to investigate as the last thing I want is for some battery to leak. 😵
This motherboard can accommodate the whole 1024 KB of RAM, but there is very little use of the extra memory. The chipset of the m/b is not compatible with EMS, but one man from Bulgaria wrote an emulator driver, moving data and emulating EMS page frame in the last 64 of conventional 640 kb of ram. try to find it (called jukoemm or something like this). This is one of the fastest XT class PCs. 15 or so years ago I had the same m/b, but it's chipset died.
Hey @andrewsuvorow6818 - thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware of that! Very cool. Will try to find that driver. 👍
My first Computer was a TI-994A as that's all I could afford. Got a generic portable audio tape drive, and made a cable and that was my storage and worked nicely abet slow. Then I got a IBM PC/XT, all the extras were non IBM to keep costs low. Got a job as a programmer then I got an IBM AT, Now I have many computers and laptops in the house. The computing power is insane today, compared to the beginning LOL I still have my TI-99 and PC/XT in the basement. You found a nice find!
@joehorecny7835 the TI-99/4A was a cool little computer with the black cartridge slot on the right hand side. I bet you love the graphics upgrade when you got the IBM XT !!! Should definitely get it out of the basement and dust it off. Sounds like you need a good game of alleycat !
@@RetroRarez My mom bought me one for the holidays, I had great years with it. Beige version. Cassette recorder, books, games, I learned some BASIC programming! It was great! 1983.
@@jackilynpyzocha662 - every kid knew something about BASIC growing up. Even if it was 10 Print "Hello" 😁
Been patiently waiting for this video! Forgot to mention you're the third owner ;) glad she's still booting for you, I basically bought and stored, then sold. Looking forward to your next video!
Hey @LuKasFunHouse great to hear from you !! Third owner.... 🙂 good to know the history. Yep, we are just mere custodians of this stuff. She's had a good clean and is being well looked after. Currently sits next to the Commodore XT I found just before. I'm in the process of putting together some games on floppy disk and will test her out on some other things. Seems to crash now on Digger, not sure if its a himemory thing or something else. Sierra games still play fine. Eventually I'll open up that power supply and give it a good clean out and see if any caps are bulging. Other than that - very happy! Glad you love the video!
@ i only played conquest of camelot so cannot help you there! Though if i find any other cool odd things around, ill let you know!
My first PC was a Sega SC3000 with tape drive. First IBM was at work in 1987 and IBM PCXT 4.77 Meg Hz green screen running Basic and dBase3. Talk about slow on dBase.
Hey @paulwarner5395 - did you have the black Australian version or the white Japanese version? The tape (SR-1000) had a cool little sega logo on it. Better than the C64 tape! dBase would have been slow as.... maybe because of the different ram on that thing too.
Also started with an XT, but it was a Taiwan XT-clone (kind of like this system in the video) called the TAVA PC. My dad originally upgraded it with an NEC V20 and a new crystal, but I remember being a little frustrated because it made some of our games run too fast. I think my favorite games were Into the Eagles Nest (on one of those disks), Captain Comic, Shark, and Sopwith I remember having a lot of awful games too though. Things like Bushido or Disney Matterhorn Screamer
Hey @krad2520 I haven't heard of a TAVA before. Yes! If you have a faster(ish) PC everything will go super fast running msdos. I did a TH-cam short on Captain Comic running on one of my IBM PC's. Very cool game - filled many a weekend. Also remember Bushido... not shark though!
To answer your end-of-video question: First computer, Timex Sinclair... though I was VERY little. I cut my teeth on the CoCo2 I received for my fifth birthday in 1986, that I referenced in our modem conversation the other day.
1986 and a CoCo2 !!! Big investment for back then for a 5th birthday. Good parents!
I remember those monitors from back in the day... we had one on the test bench at the computer store where I worked in the early 90s.
This one seems to be pretty reliable (touch wood). I might open it up at some point and just check that theres no bulging capacitors.
I D K F A
Greetings, mate! We couldn't afford a PC with floppy disk, or a disk drive peripheral in those years, so my beginnigs were with a Sinclair ZX81 and then the beloved Atari 800XL with Cassette Tape peripheral. You could type a game programme from a magazine too. Loved seeing the Aussie surroundings.
Hey @mrfndz - Yeah the Sinclair is a cool little compact unit. The Atari cassettes remind me of Commodore with their cool graphics. Glad you like the Aussie landscape! Had to feature the cows. 🐄I wondered if people outside Australia would appreciate it or not. In any case, its just part of me finding this stuff. I film when I can, but most people don't like me filming when I pick up something as they value their privacy. I hope to do more shots of the actual deal or maybe feature some footage with their face blurred or something like that. Where abouts are you?
Commadore PLus 4 & Commadore 64. Now I have a modern system.
Hey @sgottoboni - Love the Plus 4. Which one did you use more? Guessing the 64 ?
What a find! Thanks for sharing it with us. Really enjoying the channel, keep it up!
Thanks @TheBasementChannel - yeah this was such a cool find. I'm adding it to the studio in the background. I'm just filming what I'm doing and showing what I find. Makes me happy to know that other people like it and are passionate about this stuff too! 🙂
Awesome score! I’d love one of these chunky red power switch models. Worth the drive for sure. Thanks for sharing with us 😊
Yeah the power switches are one of my favorite things on these XT's. Nothing also beats the little button points on the side to slide the case up too! I'm going to look after this little baby. Hope to get the keyboard alt key fixed. Shame it didn't have CGA or EGA or something, but it is what it is!
Impressive that unreliable Miniscribe hd still works.
@32KOFDATA - hahahaha yeah I was surprised, given the Commodore PC I found the other day and then the Epson before that.... both of which I need hard drives for. Dont want to jinx it now! 😁 I did see that Digger crashed on me a few times, so I'm not sure whats going on with that. Will need to have a peak through it.
Nice find. Gosh it looks really nice. No rust, as you say a bit of dirt but that half aint bad. Did notice some additional and empty ram slots(?)...........In my case beggars can't be choosers......... I'm begging for a 5150 😃
@josephphillips9243 - you wont believe this, but I just found one, in amongst a huge collection of IBM's. This collection is soo big, I need to schedule some time to unpack it and go through it. I'll end up making a video on it, probably around Christmas, as it will be up there, in terms of big finds. But I do agree, nothing beats finding an IBM XT, especially a mint 5150.
@@RetroRarez Looking forward to that video 👍
@@josephphillips9243 yeah its going to be days of videos and editing. Probably will be the biggest video I'll ever make. I'd like to do it justice so it might be cut into into parts. Maybe an overview video first, then unboxing for some software (theres a few of those boxes), then an overview of the hardware, then opening it all up. I actually can't believe that this happened, because everything was in the way to stop it. Absolute fluke that it worked out. Will enjoy filming it though!
I hate you…. How come I can’t find something like that
@rastkopetrovic7896 - hahaha yeah I totally get it. Sometimes its a drought and then bang. I usually find one cool thing every week. Sometimes it might be that modem video I did... other times its an XT, other times it might be software. Its whatever it is.... meant to be. One observation is that people are selling stuff at the moment, trying to raise cash, pay the bills etc... so its a buyers market - at lease here in Australia.
@ here in WA is mostly drought…it only drizzles
@@rastkopetrovic7896 Oh really? Hard to find stuff over there?
Kind of amazed the psu didn’t blow a filter cap. Probably worth checking (the monitor too)
@Octamed - I was very concerned that when I picked it up, it would BLOW 🔥or at least smoke. But the seller had it running for hours, so it might be fine (for now). However, we all know it WILL blow up - just a matter of when.
Fantastic find. If you keep finding machines like this every week you will need to open a museum! And it boots ! My first family pc was the Amstrad CPC 6128, then further down the track a 486.
I'm a magnet for this stuff... and I hope to put it all on display. I've got an insane collection and really want to showcase it and have people USE it. Sounds weird but I'm not a hoarder, I just feel like these things should be preserved and I'd like to eventually have a place where people can enjoy it as much as I do. The Amstrad 6128 was a cool looking machine with that black disk drive on the right hand side. Those disks were unique too. Funny looking back how all these things had different formats. Not like now where most stuff talks to each other. Glad you enjoyed the video @aussie_retro_dude9253 !!!
amstrad cpc464
Ever found an XT before? They're getting harder and harder to find. While I have seen the occasional IBM 5150 and 5160 around, the clones are getting especially hard to find. What was your families first computer? Mine was an XT clone, made out of someones garage! It was back in 1986 and ran msdos. While it wasn't the first computer I used, it was the first in my household. I spent many a weekend playing Digger !! Oh and it had an EGA monitor too. Pretty advanced for back then (couldn't get VGA as it was too expensive).
Maybe it's a bit offtopic, but i'd like to point out that the device at 1:38 is not a surge protector, it's just a somewhat sensitive RCD. Its only job is to protect humans from earth fault currents.
Yes it is. I should have been cleared about that. It's designed to protect me !
Dial up modems are one of my favorite things about retro computing. Not many people make videos about it. I have a made a few on my channel over the years, and I still actively use a dial up modem to connect to BBSes sometimes. The first modem I owned was a 300 baud modem on my CoCo2. I started calling BBSes on it when I was in the fourth grade. I recently found one of the modems, new in box, and made a video about it as well, as I've been trying to recreate setups from my childhood. The modem you featured here is really cool. I love how they took extra effort to put in different colored LEDs. Gorgeous!
@BollingHolt I've decided to start a little modem collection on the side. A 300 baud modem with a CoCo2 would have been very cool back then. State of the art! The LED's are really nice and I love the colour and box too. Next to a US Robotics Courier, this would be my favorite modem.
@@RetroRarez I always am happy to hear about more modems and more modem content! 😎 I can see why those would be your favorites. Excellent choices!
Have mercy, take it to the recycling depot.
My first 'modem' was a Sendata Acoustic Coupler (had to go down the garage & find it to get the brand.. 300bps (300 baud)... My first [real] modem was 1200/1200 though... They both came with Telecom (Australia) registration paperwork, alas I've been a little tardy and still haven't sent that in yet (personally owned equipment needed registration to be connected to the public phone network the reason for the paperwork.. that requirement now only in history)
@ChrisGuiver - Sendata is a name I haven't heard in a looong time. I used to laugh at the Telecom and then Austel stickers and compliance... like the network ever burned down or crashed because someone was using a 1200 baud modem. 🙂 I'd love to find sold old paperwork on that.
Wow k eh I actually MADE THESE VERY MODEL at Racal Electronics at North Ryde on the production line in 1985. Could even have been one of the ones I made🤣. Those were early days for sure
So amazing that all these years later, this modem pops up along with the person who made it 39 years ago! What was the production line like?
@@RetroRarez Well sufficed to say, I was gone 3 months later 😏. Lines are as boring as batshyt, where the biggest issue is which radio station gets listened to. After doubling the daily throughput and halving the number of bungs (i.e. units sent back for re work) and surrounded by a pack of wolves telling me to slow down, I decided it wasn't the place for me.
Very cool. I remember a time when I thought "8088! I want an 8086 with an 8087 math coprocessor." Now I think an 8088! Those were the days. Thanks for the video and the journey.
Hey @pcgoblin2 - Yeah its funny how we want to go back. I remember my dad telling me in the 80's not to throw out all those floppy disks and computers. Now all I want is a good 8088 XT !!
@@RetroRarez If you want a whole _wall_ of similarly retro machines, let me know!
@@prophetzarquon who could say no to that? But I'm in Australia. 😢
I've still got my 8088XT. It works fine... Also, my IBM PS/2 286, & an Epson 386. The 486/Pentium/Core based boards, I've pulled from their cases & boxed up. The Kaypro II needs a main drive swap (it has two, but they're keyed & IDK), & the Apple Lisa with external hard drive, has a failed power supply. Not sure the status of the NeXT Station? Still got a bunch of books, too: Osborne manual, IBM manuals, etc... Haven't found any museum etc, interested. I hope they don't end up as landfill, especially since the condition ranges from salvageable to working fine!?
I used a couple of NeXT systems in the 90's. They were very cool. You've got to get that Lisa up and running... such a great machine! Please don't let them go to landfill. I'll happily save them. 🥰
So does my Compaq Portable (slightly hacked with a 286 CPU card…).
@@RetroRarez Yes! The Lisa was one of my favorites; a great machine. For better or for worse, the one I have, was set up to run MacOS 1. (Just be sure to disable an app's Sound before it tries to specify a tone's frequency; unsupported by the piezo buzzer!) I'd like to flip it open & look for any obvious blown capacitors, etc, but I've got no safe space to leave projects laid out right now. I actually have a plan to make the Kaypro II battery powered... _sort of!_ There's a lot of unused space, inside the case. Rather than running the Kaypro itself, I've considered powering just the Kaypro's display off an inverter, while emulating the "Kaypro" CP/M environment using a Raspberry Pi. One advantage of this, would be that the display can show (green-on-black) _video_ rather than just text, if I want to make someone say "How?"! I'd even sacrifice a spare power cord, to leave a frayed end so that it looks _really_ impossible. If you are interested in taking the whole collection off my hands, I don't really need any significant amount of money for it all. My main concern is that they be seen (& ideally, used), so that more people can learn what old "personal" computers used to be like! The main barrier as I see it, would be safely shipping them. Know any retro computing enthusiasts in Colorado?
