I play and teach the fiddle. This channel is all about that! I focus on bluegrass, Texas/contest style, and old time fiddle styles and here's a link to my bio, if you want to know more. www.fiddlestar.com/about-megan.php

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - 1/2 and 3/2 double stops Here are two double stops which make the same chord, but do two different jobs. Chord voicings, baby! I hope you also have a house full of banjos, like I do. It’s a pretty joyous existence. #fiddle #fiddlestar #fiddlelessons

SYSPTW - Bb ending tag
มุมมอง 177หลายเดือนก่อน
Something You Should Practice This Weekend - Bb Ending Tag Hi friends! I couldn’t resist doing another tag where we start and end on the same note. I’ve been noticing lately how often we have to just noodle over the same chord for a while in between important phrases and these little tags will help increase your noodling vocabulary. I’m here to help. 💜 #fiddle #fiddlestar #fiddlelessons
SYSPTW - key of C tag same octave

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - key of C tag same octave Hi friends! I have been working hard on John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project stuff over the last few days, not to mention obsessing over the Olympics so this video is coming to you a little late but there’s still plenty of weekend left - and now you have a fun key of C tag (with a little twist) to work on while you watch gymnast...
SYSPTW - key of B tag with double slide 4th finger
มุมมอง 255หลายเดือนก่อน
Something You Should Practice This Weekend - key of B tag with double slide 4th finger Hi friends! I’m back and it’s time to improve our 4th finger strength with a classic and important tag for the key of B. This is one of those tags that should be as comfortable as breathing. But we get intimidated by it because of the 4th finger slide. I get it. It’s time. Tackle it. You can do it. Channel th...

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - cool break in E part 2 We’re back this weekend with the second half of the awesome break @deanier played while @sistersadie was warming up backstage at the Opry last week. I couldn’t leave you just hanging on the 4 chord with nowhere to go… 💜 #fiddle #fiddlestar #fiddlelessons

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - cool key of E break part 1 Listen. This is shameless. I saw @deanier playing with @sistersadiemusic backstage at the Opry (a video on IG stories courtesy of our friend @sethtaylor427) and the break she played was so badass I had to teach it to you immediately. It fits so perfectly with the double stop progressions we’ve been doing lately - I couldn’t...
SYSPTW - descending chromatic 3/1 lick
มุมมอง 2932 หลายเดือนก่อน
Something You Should Practice This Weekend - chromatic half step 3/1 lick Now this one may be short, but it is pretty cool, if I do say so. It goes lots of places (I mean within songs, not like Topeka, or Paris) and you should be able to pick it up fairly quickly. Plus, it helps you practice your 3/1 second position double stop which you should be using more than you are. Have fun, my friends. ...
SYSPTW - chromatic bow crossing fill

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - chromatic bow crossing fill Happy scorching hot weekend everyone! Here’s a fun fill that involves some half step slides and a groovy little bow crossing section and it’s in a closed position so you can play it over any chord and well, I just hope you like it. Lester and I are staying inside mostly, and I wish the same for you. 💜 #fiddle #fiddlestar #...

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - G waltz double stop progression but also counting in to 3/4 time I’ll admit, I got a little carried away here. But this is so fun to play and it will teach you all kinds of amazing things along the way. I swear. I hope you’re loving your fiddle this weekend and that you got your bow rehaired already this year. If not, holler at my friends @theviolins...

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - counting into pickup notes I know, I know, I wasn’t here last weekend and now I’m late this weekend but I swear it’s not because I don’t love you and I don’t have things for you to practice over the weekend. Last weekend I was playing a festival with the John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project and there was zero service and this weekend I’m in Weiser, ID t...

SYSPTW - two double stops for an ending lick
มุมมอง 3373 หลายเดือนก่อน
Something You Should Practice This Weekend - two double stops for an ending lick Well, I’m back from Croatia and I had a little trouble revving up to film this video because jet lag, but I will not let a seven hour time difference stop me from double stopping. Today we’re adding a couple of different double stops to a little ending lick. It’s so important to get used to grabbing for these finge...

Something You Should Practice This Weekend - double stops with toggle thingie Just because I’m on vacation doesn’t mean you get to be! There’s still plenty of time to practice this weekend. Here’s what needs to happen when you play longer bow double stops so that no one (including you) gets bored. I hope that some of you got to see the northern lights and that you feel bad for not telling me ab...

Hi Megan, this is Claude Sevigny. Do you have any recommendations for selling an Italian fiddle by Maggiali circa 1932?
Everyone played this when I was a kid. Love it
I just started learning clawhammer after spontaneously buying a banjo as one does, I love it so muchhhhh I've gotta make it to something like this. sneeeeee
👏👏👏👏 🪕 🎻
Looks like I missed a great one!
I'm well into middle age and recently decided to try my hand at violin/fiddle, as I play several other instruments and figured I'd see if I can tackle my favorite yet hardest of all. I've purchased all of the fiddle books I could find with your name on them, though that was before I realized you also have a TH-cam channel. I appreciate your dedication to and love for teaching. Thank you. :)
Great ideas
These are great suggestions l Love it
Worth noting that the Turkey in the Straw melody is closely linked to older British Isle fiddle tunes that predate the blackface minstrel song - so you can think of it more as appropriation rather than purely racist origins. Not trying to to downplay the core issue though - blackface/minstrel shows were a huge part of 19th Century American popular culture and perpetuated racist stereotypes that are still present today. There are plenty of straight up racist social relics that have gone unchallenged for too long.
Great tribute and wonderful lesson!
Sure would like to find music notation for this tune. A great tune.
Wonderful job, Megan 🩵
One time of meeting and fiddling with him changed my perspective and gave me more confidence to play MY way. I can only imagine the influence he'd have getting to sit with him multiple times. He was super nice too. What a great way for you to pay tribute to him.
Thank you! I am trying to learn this by ear with Strum Machine as my accompanist and This is perfect!
Thanks Megan! What would you recommend for selling a 1932 Italian fiddle Maggiali32?
Megan, thank you for this lovely tip of the hat to Bobby. I tip my hat to you both.
So good!!
Great tag!
Millers Reel and how to master bowing
Camden locks I found fascinating watching a boat navigating and operating the locks. We found Camden a nice change of pace .
I like this simple circular tag. I feel validated in making up tag variations. Thanks!
It may be because I don't have a therapist and I am mentally unwell but you brought me to tears, beautiful playing.
It'll be nearly 40 years since I heard Rudy Meeks play this. What a treat! You're fantastic.
Where can i find music to this tune
Love you, Megan! meg eldridge here!
Good stuff, as always.
you are amazing! Happy Fiddling indeed. More B content please
Awesome! Fiddle barking and biting!
This is delightful both the tune and the banter 😂❤
Ohhh Yes!
Love that you included marking the 1, passing, and 4 chords. I think it helps when youre learning, for that to be pointed out so that the brain begins to process it. Especially when its chords other than G, C, and D (1/3 chords) Maybe its just me. I can hear the melodies fine. As an adult learner coming from a lifelong background of rhythm guitar by ear, I find that on rhythm guitar i always know what chord im in at any given time. But sometimes on a lead on the fiddle, in one of the not 1/3 chords, I might not realize just at any random point in it, what chord it might be in at that place in the piece without doing some thinking. Great piece and great instruction! Thank you!!
Yes! Everyone wants to sound cool. That makes a fun song kickoff too.
Lovely 😊😊
Nice!
Those half steps are killing me! Sounds great though, thanks for sharing :)
Very nice.
you are amazing!!
Lovely
Is there any way I could get the sheets of this song? Thankyouu
This one is going to take a bit longer. Glad you split it up. Sounds awesome though!
Thanks for transcribing and demonstrating this Megan. Much appreciated. Practising now..!! 😂 Sister Sadie are on at The Station Inn tonight. 😉
WOW .. Very helpful, thanks!
I think I got it!
I can hear some of John Hartford's style in the tune. I guess the only place it was studio recorded is the Cadillac Rag LP. I'm surprised it didn't show up in his Mammoth Collection book.
Sweet!
Thank you!
Cool! Thx
You betcha!
From Texas Time Travel: (The intrique continues indeed) Fiddler Cotton Collins first heard the catchy waltz in Germany during World War II, bringing it back to play in the halls across Texas with his band, the Lone Star Playboys. It was after a show at Westphalia Hall in 1946 that hall manager B.J. Lignau suggested calling it the Westphalia Waltz.
Wow, that is so cool! Thank you so much for sharing that.
Didn't quite catch that name!
The guitar? Or the mom? ;)
very nice!
Thanks! It's a great tune.
I learned this in the car on the way to a contest and played it the next day, thank you for the fantastic recording!
That's so cool, you must have a great ear to learn that fast! Jeepers
