There was no commentator like Reon Murtha. Just like the phenomenal trotter Luxury Liner that won the 1988 New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington in Christchurch was. This video was when harness racing in New Zealand was like nothing you'd ever seen before. The standard of racing was phenomenal. And make no error driver of Luxury Liner Tony Herlihy defined harness racing driving. The finish of this race is like no other. Note how TOUGH Luxury Liner is...got passed by Our Mistro at the 200m to go...but NEVER GAVE UP...and came back to beat a courageous race from Our Mistro who simply ran out of energy after doing so much work to hit the front. Yes the Purdon family do define harness racing here in New Zealand, they are the standard, and if you ever beat them, you have beaten the best there is in New Zealand harness racing, and that is some effort. New South Island Christchurch racing caller Matt Cross is rapidly developing into an excellent horse racing caller/commentator. He's got what it takes.

Great races, hard hitting mares going head to head week after week. Wonder if the kind of shadow roll, "Shady Daisy" used..with the "clothes pins" up, would have kept Anniecrombie from looking down..

Great vid, thanks for posting..these races you could only read about in weekly Harness Horse back in the day and only years later see on TH-cam.. I always loved Willie as a horse..but was always sorry Farrington used him up till 1983..I know they will say he wanted to run and being a gelding, etc..Should have retired him end of 78-79..

Cheetah was the largest and most beautifully gated harness horse I ever saw. He raced for many years on Chicago circuit.
