Free Worldwide Heightmaps for Unreal and beyond - JAXA to Blender Workflow ⛰️
Mapbox recently started requiring a credit card to access even its free options, so I wanted to show a slightly more tedious but completely free method of getting high resolution worldwide heightmaps from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency public database.
We will download heightmaps, overlay google earth color maps, trim the image to 10km, bake, and export.

Bring Blender Geometry Nodes to Unreal Engine (works for cloth simulations too!)

After much searching and hair pulling I have found a way to export geometry nodes to Unreal Engine using a series of exports and imports in various file types. This tutorial outlines the workflow of taking real-world location height maps into Unreal Engine 5. In this workflow, we use Quadspinner Gaea to add detail to the height map and create material and foliage masks. Then, using those masks, we quickly texture and populate our Unreal Engine landscape. Requires mapbox api token, which requires one to sign up for an account and give them credit card info

@Natedotfbx nice! Many options require tokens now unfortunately... BlendergGIS?
You have to give Mapbox your CC information mandatory before you can sign up. Just a heads up, I froze my CC then signed up using a frozen CC, got my access token, and I will just delete my account. terraining.ateliernonta is a MUCH better tool!!!
Thanks for mentioning the website, I was just searching for an alternative. Works perfectly! Didn't trust my cc card to something as random as Mapbox.
This is so awesome! Unfortunately the amount of frames multiplied by the number of vertices results in large file size pretty quickly. But some amazing effects can be made with this, thanks!

when trying to import into ue , ue5 crashes , any idea?
Might be too large of an import. If there are too many verts or frames, you might not have the RAM to process it.
@Natedotfbx thank , one question though , what if we export alembic and not do all the does extra steps?is this just because of already mbic cache file size?

ay so ima help a lot of people out who are showing up late to the video. the first file he opens up around the 6 minute mark you don't need. he just has a bunch of extra stuff in there but you can still load up the png file you downloaded, just follow his steps from when he right clicks to find the file node. where there's a will, there's a way
how to make different like 5 biomes in gaea on one landscape???

Searching something like this for procedural animated materials - PLEASE don't tell me the only way is baking one by one frame ;_;
You can take some of the same data points and build the shader in your respective engine instead. Blender-based texture animations rely on a completely different rendering engine. You'll need to use a shader builder / language for your specific render engine. GLSL -> WebGL -> Godot / ThreeJS etc. HLSL -> Amplify -> Shader Nodes -> Unity And whatever Unreal uses. etc.
I'm very interested as I can use this for urban planning with undeveloped properties.
Any chance you'll be updating your template for Gaea 2?

Great tutorial, your tool look amazing, too bad it doesn't fit with Gaea 2. I failed to recreate, need more details into it.
I purchased this package from gumroad, and my version of gaea 2.0 will not open the gaeabuild.tor file it doesn't even show up in the open dialog. If I try to open it directly rather than from inside gaea, gaea starts and then crashes.
when I go to export as an ABC I cant see the tick box for selected objects only. Does anyone know if this is because I am using Blender 4.1 and if it is called something different now?
Where is the foliage defined in the template? I've been trying to change the culling distance, but it seems the foliage is perhaps done procedurally. It's still well above my skill level.

I have a problem at 20:00 with the water mask. When I connect it to the other modules (M_Lake, Combined, M_Riverbed), I don't see the mask as in the video but still see it as it is at 19:50. Can anyone help me with that?
That node is a file, make sure your file path is properly assigned in the settings of the node
@@Natedotfbx The file path is correct but the problem persists. Also, when I try to have a look at the textures clicking on the Minimap node, it applies only one texture. It is kinda a weird behaviour :/
@@giacomofranzoso3114 Does it have any affect on the final nodes in the sequence? Sometimes Gaea encounters a bug that causes it to display masks as 3D. Its annoying but overall harmless.
@@Natedotfbx Yes, unfortunately final nodes display something completely wrong or blank.

Hey man I was wondering if you would be willing to help me? I want to use this for detailing a city but what is the best way for me to add details such as roads, city areas and farmland. thankyou for this video :)
Since man made objects like roads need to be very exact, youll probably need to manually implement them. Look up spline roads. Depending on the look you are going for, you could accomplish farmland with a different landscape texture, use decals, or create a model in blender. Theres always more than one way to do things in UE, give it a shot and see what you can do.
@@Natedotfbx no worries! and Im making a tower defence but using real locations as the inspiration, would it be possible do you think to use the map we have to pull the roads out in a similar fashion to the water mask and then maybe elevate them slightly for ease of finding? or do you think there is a better way?
@@IgniteSlickGamer Unfortunately, the resolution of landscapes does not allow for fine details like that. You'll have to model details like that. Perhaps a large decal if you aren't concerned with how it looks up close.

sure thing, its on my gumroad. its one of the gaea builds that came with the Stylized version of the tutorial.
how did you create the RVTs. I have them from the other project but it can't be dragged into the outliner or scene
RVT set up is a bit complex and can break if moved from its original project or added to a new landscape. Step 4 onwards explains it. docs.unrealengine.com/4.27/en-US/RenderingAndGraphics/VirtualTexturing/Runtime/QuickStart/
The masking and vegetation nodes are giving me errors and stopping me from building my terrain. It is quite weird.
Sometimes Gaea has difficulty compiling large graphs. Try clicking each node from the beginning sequentially to let gaea recompile manually. If that doesnt fix it, maybe a node got disconnected?
Stuck at 6:40... When i press import theres no file like GaeaBuild.tor and also no GaeaReal etc folders.... i scanned whole PC for it and theres none.

no its not. he skips so many steps, its impossible to follow this tutorial fully. 👎👎 that's one thumb for each of you
ive got it to work without having to make a location key skipped everything after that works fine
would you be able to use the same stuff for say a none stylised landscape or could you cover one for none stylised love the video its excalty what i need to get my landscape finished off the problem is im not going for the stylised look im going for a landscape.

I made some test using USD, it's working, you have nothing to do except exporting as USD. bonus, you're keeping material (if compatible)
there is also 2 plugins on market (99euros). But haven't test it yet. if someone else had ?
Hey I followed through to 10:52, but when I click on the '00_Minimap' node things stop progressing as shown in the tutorial. Not even sure WHAT is going wrong, but Gaea is saying something about the '11_GM_Tree_L' Node?
Try right clicking on the L_tree node and turning off underlay. Then going back to the beginning of all the graphs and clicking through the sequence of nodes one by one. Sometimes gaea needs help processing larger files.

Hmm, not sure why that would be the case... how large is your map? make sure to click the base level calculation before clicking the height scale

@@eunachaanakya the website was down for a bit, but it seems to be working again. You can always export smaller maps and combine in a photo editing software.
