Rocky Mountain Chick-Flicks - A Nature-Therapy Channel.
Hi, I’m Dee, and this channel is a little bit of “nature therapy” (and wildlife photography), mostly from Alberta, Canada. I am a wildlife photographer who primarily loves to capture interesting bird and animal behaviour. I also try to give more than I take by volunteering my photography “skills” to a wildlife rescue & rehab charity. I have been doing this for 8 years now.
My hope is you will love nature as much as I do. Being out in nature is incredibly therapeutic, and the more people that care about wildlife and nature, the more advocates there are for protecting habitats and ecosystems.

Getting a Licking from the Paw Patrol | GREAT PYRENEES DOGS are Big Friendly Giants - Rural Alberta
Sometimes when I'm out driving the backroads of Alberta, I'll come across dogs that roam free and (hopefully) discourage rural crime. Most of the time these dogs will come running out into the road, barking their heads of and leaving me terrified that I'll hit them with my vehicle!
On this occasion, I was photographing some birds, when I noticed these two wagging tails in my wing mirror. These gorgeous pups (which I think are Great Pyrenees - please let me know in the comments, if you know) came over to check if I was friend or foe. Pretty sure they decided I was a good girl, as I was treated to lots of kisses and puppy-love, so I gave them lots of fuss in return.
Thought I'd share the little clip I managed to get of them, as they really made me smile. And yes, in case you're wondering, I did end up with several scratches in the paintwork! Totally worth it, lol!

Common REDPOLL Enjoying the SNOW | Autumn Birds of Alberta, CANADA
มุมมอง 4821 วันที่ผ่านมา
A cute little Common Redpoll enjoying some fresh snow in my backyard tree. This was actually shot this time last year, but we have snow in the forecast, so I'm hoping I'll get some other cute little bird visitors to photograph while I still have some fall foliage in my trees. Watch to the end to see the photos I was lucky enough to capture of this sweet little bird. If you enjoyed this content,...
Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) Timelapse | Alberta Canada - 10th Oct 2024 | 🍁Happy Thanksgiving🍁

Aurora borealis (aka Northern Lights) timelapse from Alberta, Canada on 10th October 2024. Timelapse taken with the Insta360 Ace Pro camera. Stills shot with an iPhone13. This is what science and magic combined looks like. The lights were so spectacular that night that they were clearly visible even with city light pollution. I first noticed them around 8:15PM (they may have been visible before...
Cutest Raven Calls - Raven Finds Her Voice | #Alberta #Wildlife #Birdsounds

After her friends flew off and she was left alone, this raven seemed to take the opportunity to test out her vocal range. She made the cutest raven sounds. She only went quiet again when one of the other ravens returned. Unfortunately, I had to cut quite a bit due to wind noise that I couldn't edit out (Grr). This was the second week in a row that I've filmed ravens making funny noises (yes, th...
RARE Sighting of ENDANGERED WHOOPING CRANE in Alberta, Canada | Wildlife Photography | #nikond500

A Whooping Crane is not a common sight in southern Alberta. Firstly these birds are endangered, and secondly they normally fly to northern Alberta to breed, by way of Saskatchewan. I had a chance to spend some time observing one that spent a couple of months in an agricultural area near Calgary this summer, and got to witness some interesting behaviour from the Sandhill Cranes that were spendin...

Watch to the end to see how close this raven gets to the vultures! And wait to see the tender moment between the vultures afterwards. Whilst out looking for wildlife in the Alberta foothills, I spotted a pair of juvenile turkey vultures resting on a rocky outcrop, next to some lovely early fall foliage. They were minding their own business when a raven flew over to their rock and started callin...

Back in June, a fledgling black-billed magpie turned up in my backyard, after probably falling from a nest in high winds. Red-tailed Hawk's Screaming Call - Alberta, #Canada | #Wildlife Photography | Nikon D500

The soundtrack to summer, here in Alberta, Canada, is performed by a beautiful red-tailed hawk. Watch till the end to see the gorgeous prairie and mountain scenery that this buteo raptor calls home during the summertime. I love the way he turned his head. That’s cute and beautiful.
Isn’t he something! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave some comments. Very much appreciated 🙏🏻
I love your videos. I live in Alberta too. ❤
Hey welcome to the channel, It’s nice to have a fellow Albertan on here. Glad you like the videos 😁
Is on the power line?
Yes, on the pylon. A few of them seemed to like hanging out there.
Awww he so adorable. 🥰🥰❤️. He sounds like a crow though. 🤣😂🤣😂
Good thing you didn't get out of the car! Do you realise how dangerous that was??? You could have been licked to death😅👍
I know right! Did you see the size of the tongue on that big guy! 😳😝
Well let the gosling cry
Nice shot - new friend
Welcome to the channel! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Appreciate the support :o)

Outstanding
Mother Nature's artwork at its finest!

Excellent video
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Which camera do you use
For this video it would have been the Nikon D7000, but more recent videos were shot with the Nikon D500, which is still a relatively old camera, but is far superior to my old D7K.
Such a beautiful bird and well captured Dee! Good bit of music too! Lots of variants of redpolls in Europe and nice to see we can agree on the Redpoll ❤
Thanks so much Richard! I do love these little cuties, and it's wonderful to have them here in the winter (sometimes with the odd hoary redpoll in the flocks) 😊
He has a face that looks permanently sleepy. It makes me wish he wiuld sit on my hand☺👍
Can you imagine! He looks soo soft all fluffed up against the cold. 🥰
Beautiful little bird. Hoping you will get some autumn warmth back before winter weather settles in.
Isn’t he gorgeous! We’ve been really lucky with the weather so far, had an absolutely fantastic fall. We need a day of snow to remind everyone to get their winter tires on 😀
Oh I love that you took a video of them! I dragged my older kids out onto our deck to watch them. It was a fun experience for us 😍 Like blue flames dancing in the sky ❤
That’s awesome! I hope your kids appreciated it. It’s just magical to watch hey.
@@Rockymtnchick they did 😉
Must have been an amazing experience. Reminds me of how I felt when I saw a full moon eclipse but those colours must have felt more spectacular👍
It was spectacular, it’s been years since I’ve seen such a good light show. This wasn’t the best I’ve seen, but it was magical to watch. The hard part was tearing myself away before I strained my neck from looking up so much 😝
I am so happy for you, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Amazing! I would have been thrilled to get the sandhill cranes, let alone a whooping crane! So awesome 🤗Congrats!
Thank you! ☺Yes I feel the same way - highly unlikely to ever see one again and I'm amazed I got the action with the sandhills. I feel very lucky.
I think someone loves you.
@@MelindaGreen 😂🤣😂
This reminds me of the magpies in my area. They make the sweetest sounds and chirping at nighttime. ❤
I have some chatty magpies here too. Their funny little sounds are adorable sometimes 😊
Me too! There some on my deck looking for dog food.
How can you tell it is a she? We see our raven couple almost every day and still can't tell for sure😐Yea that wind is definitely a Grr! But you still got a lot of good sounds in spite of it👍
I can’t! 😁 But other raven videos I’ve seen have had the females making quieter sounds than the males. This one seemed a bit smaller than the others too. Could just be a young-un 🤷🏼♀️ Thanks! It’s a windy ol’ place is Alberta! I should’ve put the microphone on the camera but I didn’t think I had enough time.
Our family hiked down the red rock canyon last month and I made a video all about our experience at Waterton 😍
Ok this is adorable. The music. The text (that could be a little bigger for my mobile screen 😅), and this massive bird just trying to make his life in the wild. Also a fellow Albertan creator 🤗 subscribing because I need more nature in my life
Thank you for that lovely comment (and for the feedback about the text 👍). This channel is definitely for people who need more nature in their life (which IMHO is most people 😉), so welcome! Always nice to see some fellow Albertans on here too, wishing you all the best with your creative journey.
great video, good morning, I drove couple thousand miles to look for this angle, thank you
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Wow, that’s a long way to drive, I hope it was worth it!
Quite a repertoire. ❤😂
I have a new video coming soon with an even better raven-repertoire! 😀
❤❤❤
This is epic! Thanks so much.
@@tgill2943 Thank you so much, that’s very kind of you.
It likes to run! Must be quite an effort for a big bird like that to fly. It is interesting how it is interacting with the other birds. It is interesting how birds or animals join other species when their own kind is not around. Great stills at the end. Love that time lapse image😎👍
Interestingly it did seem to wait until the wind had really picked up before it took off. My footage is a bit shakier towards the end as I took the camera off the tripod to be ready for when it flew over. I was so happy to get those shots at the end. Being such a big bird certainly helped me lock on for those bird-in-flight shots 😂 Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t know if you’ve noticed (😉) but I have a bit of a thing for interesting wildlife behaviour 😂
Wow, what a bird and how special to see it. Nice one Dee😀
Thanks Rich! It really is an impressive bird, I feel very privileged to have had that experience 😊
I'm was actually casted for a movie and my scene is on Tuesday. And, I a crow. And, so I'm just doing as much homework as an actor to do an outstanding job for this movie. I appreciate you showing this. And, when the movie comes out..., it is called "Faces Of The Undead" done in the USA.
Hope this was helpful and hope it all goes well!
@@Rockymtnchick thank you.
Love those red rocks! If you take away the mountains and the forrest this could be a scene from the north of Western Australia👍
@@wildhomevideos 😂 so not much different then 😜 It really is striking there, I don’t feel like I can do it justice.
@@Rockymtnchick Only one difference of note. At this place you have to be careful not to get wet or you get frostbite and here you can't wait to get into the water to cool down. These places do have an effect on me too. It is no wonder that the first people had strong religious connections to places like that.
@@wildhomevideos 😁 Yes, I can understand that. This national park is my heaven-on-earth. I’ll eventually get round to making a video of the wildlife I’ve seen here, with some spectacular scenery thrown in for good measure.
I like the hiccups! Do your Ravens do that often?😎👍
I’ve not seen it often. He did it twice, I was just too slow to catch the first one. I think this is the first time I’ve recorded it.
Who would have thought that two vultures would ever make you say 'awwwwwww'.
Not me, for sure, but they were soo cute, lol! 😊
Cool! I love Wilson's Snipes!
@@pHelmerinCarburnPark Thanks Paul, me too!
I wouldn't trust the Raven if I was one of these two youngsters. The Raven was probably checking whether they were sick or still young and vulnerable. I have seen a Raven creep up to a blind rabbit and was compelled to shoo it off because I knew what would happen next. Lucky these two youngsters were old enough and in good health, otherwise this encounter would have ended very different. It is amazing that you caught this on camera. Things like that seldom happen while you are filming👍
I was also amazed I caught it. It was only because I saw the raven's shadow as it flew over that I moved off what I was shooting (scenery) and went back to the vultures. I was surprised to see the raven had joined them and just managed to catch it make that funny noise before it started cawing (I missed the first one he did). Also glad it just had an amusing outcome.
This one sure takes chewing its food seriously😁👍
Yeh, I got several videos of this one eating the grass, it kept me entertained for a fair while!
A nice family outing. Lets go see some humans😎👍
🤣😂🤣
Great looking birds. Both of them. Love the pattern of their feathers. Hey, nice ambient sound, it's the bit that takes you there👍
Thank you! I like how they are such different birds, but with similar colouring and interesting patterns. That's the sound of our wetland areas coming alive in spring! Things have gotten a lot quieter now.
such a beautiful sound! 🎵
warms the heart! 💗
@@pHelmerinCarburnPark Thanks Paul! 😊
Good Job, Rockymtnchick! Here in Western Co I have a plethora of pidgins eating from the song bird feeders. Doves flocking through (getting out of Dodge before some buffoon starts taking pot shots at them) And the occasional red winged black birds. It is my great good fortune to live close to the Colorado River. Thank you so much for your efforts. Gotta love some magpie babies. 💯
@@tgill2943 Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it. There’s more of this little one to come. Sounds like you live in a lovely location.
What a lovely present to have this guy pop up. A noisy little rascal. Gorgeous footage and audio including the lullaby👍
You guys are so fast to comment! 😀 Thank you so much! There'll be more to come, including her reaction to shadows (which is adorable). I will have that lullaby stuck in my head for weeks, lol.
@@Rockymtnchick Hahaha, at least you will sleep well. And it is far better than having "Bye bye American pie..." churning in your head all day long. Oooops! Sorry didn't mean to put that in your head! ....It is raining outside so I just happened to be on the computer downloading stuff when your bell rang.
@@wildhomevideos 🤣😂🤣 Yes I will have that stuck in my head now! And I was looking forward to a good night's sleep! 😜
Lovely bit of footage Dee, I'm missing the Red Tails as they seem to be quite scarce here! Nice work. Rich😀
Thanks Rich! This was a rare event for me to get a red-tail on camera, especially being so vocal. 😁 I was quite surprised to see you had them year-round at your last place. They’re a summer migrant here, I’ve maybe seen 2 here in the winter.
@@Rockymtnchick All the more reason to have that special experience with them, I miss them now we've moved, so common in Toronto. Great birds and that RED tail! Special. Cheers R
Must have been an old one. It's a lot of work just gathering the nectar and pollen. Not as much energy as she used to have so a lift is appreciated😊👍
I know how she feels! Lol. And she does look like she has a problem with one of her legs too.
Our birds of prey tend to avoid us and never give us a chance to take the camera out, but this one clearly didn't mind being filmed. And he even sang for you! You sure got some gorgeous footage and sound. It must have been a beautiful day👍
Thank you :o) Red-tailed hawks normally take off when I'm 1/2 a mile down the road, so this was a lovely surprise. He was definitely a chatterbox. A beautiful day indeed, a bit hot for me though and there's a bit of haze obscuring the mountains, but nothing too much (some days we can't see the mountains due to the wildfire smoke). I love the hawk scream, it's one of my favourite sounds of summer.
This is a surprise! Your magpies are a different species to ours, but the youngens sound the same when they are fed! Who could not love this little rascal 🥰👍
Interesting. And do your young-uns have the same level of manic wing-flapping when they are about to be fed? 😁 Yeh, such a cutie pie this one. So entertaining.
@@Rockymtnchick Very similar but they are accompanied by an adult at all times who is very good at hiding them under low branches and behind trees. We can never get close and we don't want to appear threatening. Our magpies are possibly even more smart than the North American species and they perceive someone looking at them directly as a threat. They live a long time and can recognise and remember human faces. They also have a tendency to attack people they take a dislike to and can cause serious injury. And once that starts they keep doing it. We have a peace treaty with the tribe which lives around our house and we don't want to break it. So we stay away.
Weird, I didn't get a notification of this reply. I've heard something similar about crows, remembering faces and even communicating to others about 'good' and 'bad' people. The fledgling used my backyard as a nursery for a few days before disappearing (presumably on an adventure into someone else's yard. About 10 days later the adults were giving their 2 youngsters flying lessons in the street and then the family ended up back in my garden for much of the next few days. I'm hoping that means I'm not a 'bad' person or at the very least that they enjoy my mini backyard nature reserve :o)
That's a killer Thumbnail Rocky! I can see more than one video with this little rascal😎
🤣You’ve got me there! I couldn’t resist! I have one more for the live stream and then I expect I’ll put one together with the other clips I filmed from inside. Such an entertaining little character 🥰
Just saw your little magpie "Live" but was too late to be able to leave a chat message. That is one cooperative little guy😃I think it wants to be your pet when it grows up. We had one like that which was brought to us because it was dying of starvation. The only way we could feed it was using chopsticks. That worked well and he recovered but it is really good that the parens are still feeding this one👍
I need to go live a little later for you guys to be awake! I appreciate that you would have left a chat message had you been able to 🙏 Well done for saving the little magpie! I don't have much of a maternal instinct, but this little one really brought it out. The adults are amazing parents thankfully!
Ooh I now have a live tab. The videos go under there after streaming, and people can watch and comment etc from there. I'm such a newb! Always learning something new :o)
