Sugar Cookie Process (From Dough to Decorating) | How Long Does It Take? How Much Does It Cost?
While the majority of my videos revolve around chemistry education, I wanted to take a brief detour from my usual content to show the applicable and beautiful chemistry-in-action of making edible artwork sugar cookies.
Many people do not realize the time commitment that goes into making these types of royal icing designed cookies, and I wanted to educate the public on the process!
In this VERY fast-forwarded video, I show how to make the dough for sugar cookies (and how long this takes), along with rolling out the dough, cutting the shapes, baking the shapes, making the royal icing, coloring the royal icing, and finally, designing the cookies! The entire process is surprisingly time intensive and every cookie is truly a labor of love! Enjoy! :)

    Very interesting to hear your perspective. I direct breastfeed my baby 90% of the time, pump rest. Thankfully, breastfeeding came quite naturally and easily to both of us. Personally, I find it very covenient, I dont have to worry about packing bottles, etc. although it does tie you to your baby quite a bit, first 6 months especially. Also BTW you can measure how much their taking at a feed by weighing them before and after feeding, but that does require a baby scales of course. Glad you found something that worked for your and your lifestyle, though! ❤

    Genuine question, do feutueses breathe ?

    • @Duckonta
      @Duckonta ปีที่แล้ว

      In a way, sort of! (But not in the typical way we do outside of the womb) They begin practicing the breathing motion throughout pregnancy by sucking in amniotic fluid (the stuff they are floating in). For the aspect of breathing "air," the mother's blood carries oxygen in it, and the fetus receives this oxygen (along with many other nutrients) through the blood vessels in the umbilical cord (and the placenta, which is connected to the umbilical cord). I hope this answers your question! :) <3

    I wonder why it doesn’t decay with a hydrogen nucleus, losing 1 proton and 1 neutron, instead of 2 of each… also I don’t understand how in beta decay when a neutron switches to a proton, it emits an electron. If the electron is thrown out into space, wouldn’t the new element created need that extra electron to hang around because it added a proton wouldn’t it need that extra electron?

    • @Duckonta
      @Duckonta ปีที่แล้ว

      These are very great questions, you were really thinking this through---I am impressed! :) So, for alpha decay, the reason it decays into a "daughter particle" of Helium instead of hydrogen has to do with Nuclear Physics calculations for a "Q" value. This value basically encompasses the energy requirements to make things---and since atoms like to be "lazy" and choose the "easiest way out," they will typically go with the route that costs the least amount of energy to get the same result (kind of like humans with basically anything we do! LOL) As for the ejected electron in beta decay, I do not claim to know all the ins and outs of Nuclear Chemistry, BUT I am pretty sure it has to do with "quarks." The new daughter particle wouldn't necessarily need this emitted electron---it is actually completely normal that some materials at room temperature contain a number of ionized atoms and free electrons! Thank you for your questions, made my day! :)

I think they're a great addition to a home medicine/first aid cabinet for household chemicals you regularly have on hand. Most of the important stuff is on the bottle, but if you're buying in bulk to fill smaller containers or a label peels off it's great to have all that info in a centralized spot.

    I'm curious as to the pharmacology of the drug. Is it possible to have a drug that seems to have a permanent effect but which can be reversed with an antidote? I would presume that to have a permanent effect a drug would need to produce a persistent effect that would remain after the drug is eliminated which would be difficult to reverse. Are there any IRL cases of such things?

    • @Duckonta
      @Duckonta ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I'm not specifically aware of a drug with permanent lasting effects before an antidote (as depicted in the movie). The closest thing that comes to mind is carbon monoxide poisoning where the carbon monoxide binds to red blood cells, which makes a person unable to breathe until an "antidote" of hyperbaric oxygen therapy would be applied. Or maybe the venom from a snake or spider, then an antivenom applied thereafter...except all of these examples result the victim with death without having the antidote rather than just becoming a raving monster, like in the movie! Thanks for the question! :)

    At how many weeks is the fetus brain able to experience basic thought processes such as thoughts of pain ? Can the fetus be awake before birth ?

    • @Duckonta
      @Duckonta ปีที่แล้ว

      To know whether a fetus can feel pain, we'd first have to know the specific location of pain in the human brain…which is a hotly debated topic that we still don't have the answer for unfortunately. Researchers over the years have found multiple areas of the brain that react to a painful stimulus, but then found these same areas also react to other stimuli (other than just pain alone). So, in short, we don't know what area(s) of our brain exclusively process pain for certain…even as of 2022! Which is CRAZY, right?! What we DO know; however, is that there are pain pathways from the site where the pain occurs, then the electrical message of "pain" travels up our spinal cord, and into our brain, where this signal gets delivered as a chemical message (like a key) that fits into specific "locks" in our brain. Once the key fits, our brain says OUCH! According to a paper published in the National Library of Medicine (linked below): “Free nerve endings (the “alarm buttons” for pain) begin to develop at about seven weeks' gestation when projections from the spinal cord, the major “cable” to the brain, can reach the thalamus (the lower alarm) at seven weeks' gestation. An intact spinothalamic projection might be viewed as the minimal necessary anatomical architecture to support pain processing, putting the lower limit for the experience of pain at seven weeks' gestation.” BUT, again, we do not know for sure because we cannot ask the fetus if it is in pain, and everyone’s experience of pain is different (what might hurt you, doesn’t hurt me or vice versa). HOWEVER, we know humans and other organisms flinch from a painful stimulus, so…since a fetus does interact with their environment pretty early on, and can be seen flinching and/or grimacing to ultrasound waves…AND the earliest surviving premature baby was born at 21 weeks (so we know he would cry when he felt pain in the NICU), I would say a fetus could potentially feel pain anywhere on the lower limit of 7 weeks to an upper limit of 21 weeks. And YES, a fetus can absolutely be awake before birth! www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1440624/ www.uab.edu/news/health/item/12427-uab-hospital-delivers-record-breaking-premature-baby www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-battle-over-pain-in-the-brain/

    • @Duckonta
      @Duckonta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brandon, In a real calorimeter (not this make-shift rigged one LOL), you wouldn't take the final mass, you would only mass the amount of food you added to the calorimeter initially (since it would all burn inside a real calorimeter). I only took the final mass of the cheese puff (the portion thereof without the black char) because that large portion of it didn't burn, and therefore wouldn't have contributed to the temperature change of the water. However, with the Dorito chip, most of it burned---so I didn't want to try and break off that tiny tiny piece that didn't burn to weigh it and subtract it from the initial (BUT, to answer your question, YES---if I was being more precise for the sake of the experiment, I would have either needed another person to immediately help me burn that little remaining piece while I measured the water temperature, OR I would've needed to weigh that tiny little piece that did not burn). Since this is an open system rigged calorimeter, there is a fair amount of error for the values collected anyways, but it gets the premise and idea of calorimetry across without all the fancy equipment! Good question! :) Best, Duckonta

      @@Duckonta thanks. I figured most of what you said above. It's definitely a great tool (even if the heat exchange is very inefficient) yi talk about conservation of energy and mass. It does show how things transform but are not destroyed or created. Thanks for the video.
