3D modeler, AI Artist, texture artist, and video editor always ready to learn something new.
I love telling stories through visuals. Little scratches on an object or some dust sitting on a piece of furniture helps viewers see the history in what they are seeing. I enjoy the little details that make things unique.
I am proficient with 3ds Max, Adobe Substance 3D Painter, and V-Ray and have a degree in Simulation, Animation, and Gaming.

Runway and Sora
With the recent release of Sora, I was eager to dive into its features and see how it stacks up against Runway’s image to video tool, a tool I’ve used extensively. To test their capabilities, I created the same project on both platforms. Starting with ChatGPT and DALL-E, I generated a series of images with the theme of weather personified. Not only was this a fun and creative concept, but it also allowed for plenty of variety to test how each platform handles different visuals.
The Experiment
Once the images were ready, I imported them into both platforms to see what I could create. Here’s what I found:
• Sora: Delivers dynamic movement and often adds a cinematic flair to the final video. However, in many cases, the output included the initial image with little to no motion before cutting to a properly animated shot. This transition felt jarring and used up valuable time, especially since exports are limited to 5-second clips.
• Runway: Stays closer to the original image, preserving the core design and details. However, in some cases, it focused on applying effects to the image rather than animating the entire scene or character.
Key Takeaways
• Motion and Originality: Sora takes the lead with more dynamic motion and creativity in its output, although the abrupt transitions can impact the flow.
• Consistency: Runway wins in maintaining the integrity of the initial image, which can be a critical factor depending on the project’s goals.
Additional Considerations
Beyond animation quality, I explored the broader toolsets and pricing options for each platform:
• Tool Range: Runway offers a more comprehensive suite of tools, making it a versatile option for creators who need an all-in-one solution. Sora, while promising, is currently more limited in its functionality.
• Pricing: Runway’s entry-level plan is $15/month, providing videos at the same resolution as Sora’s $20/month plan, but without watermarks and with more features included. Sora’s lower-tier option imposes restrictions that may not suit all users.
Conclusion
Both tools are excellent in their own ways. Runway has established itself as a robust and reliable platform, while Sora shows a lot of promise and brings a unique creative edge to the table. That said, Sora’s handling of initial images and time limitations can hinder its usability for shorter clips.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your goals and preferences. Do you prioritize motion and cinematic flair, or consistency and a broader feature set?
I’m excited to see how both tools continue to evolve.

For this project I utilized @joeloudon629's footage of the Pirate and the Scholar, and combined them in front of a series of images created using Adobe Firefly and Photoshop. With these images all connected, I made a scrolling background for the characters to sail through.

I completely agree! It’s a genre that needs to be explored and brought to life much more! What’s your favorite existing steampunk game or move?
you did this by yourself and some ai tools? wow
I put this together using Runway. I’m trying to learn how to use a verity of AI tools. Runway is a AI video tool that creates short clips. I will be releasing another video soon that will break down my process for putting this together even more.
This is just wild.
