Frédéric Chopin: Ballade No. 2 in F Major, Op. 38
Chopin's second Ballade remains a topic of discussion amongst pianists and classical music lovers alike, if only for its unusual key relationships. Composers in the Romantic era would frequently contrast music in major keys with themes in the relative minor (in this case, D minor) or parallel minor (again, F minor), but the F Major Ballade simply drops the listener into an explosive A minor theme with no development or modulation. This odd key relationship persists to the end of the piece itself, with a coda and finale entirely in A minor.
Critics of this piece often point to its disjunct transitions and repetitive melodies, but the work stands on its own as emblematic of Chopin's creative genius. Pianist-composers of this era strove to push the instrument to its technical and sonic limit, and the Ballade is perhaps one of Chopin's more daring experiments. One also cannot ignore the work's dedicatee, Robert Schumann, who famously struggled with what might perhaps today have been diagnosed as bipolar episodes. Given its inspiration for such extremes, its no wonder the second Ballade remains a staggering accomplishment of inner turmoil set to music.

Lili Boulanger: D'un Vieux Jardin from Trois Morceaux
มุมมอง 14721 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Lili Boulanger's compositions are some of the greatest wonders of the 20th century repertoire, eclipsed only by the tragedy of her early death at the age of 24. As with many composers who died young, one can only wonder the quality of music she might have gone on to produce. Her Trois Morceaux for piano are a small insight into her harmonic and melodic genius, each a short character piece or ev...
Frédéric Chopin: Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23
มุมมอง 57314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Chopin's Four Ballades remain at the core of the piano repertoire for good reason. Their breadth of expression, technical challenges, and potential for variety of interpretation provide endless opportunity for discovery. A lifetime of study and practice are not enough to sufficiently explore every detail of this music. Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23 is unique in its broad appeal - even the mo...
Amy Beach: Dreaming, Op. 15 No. 3
มุมมอง 1.6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) was an American pianist and composer, the first American woman to compose and publish a complete symphony. Her many solo piano works, including this stunningly beautiful selection from a set of Sketches, are unapologetically Romantic and often suggestive of songs, for which she was most popular during her lifetime. The piece includes a quote from Victor Hugo's...

Always thought this piece felt like a lost Liszt consolation or Liebestraume

Amy Beach has such a unique style. She’s got the harmonies of Liszt, the finesse of Brahms, the boldness of Rachmaninoff, and the poetic nature of Chopin. Good stuff
