You kind of slander Paul by claiming he was all pie-in-the-sky and not the least bit practical. Justification by faith is a PRACTICAL (rubber meets the road, meat and potatoes) doctrine. Listen to his words: "What shall we say then that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works he hath wherefore to boast - but not before God." Justification by faith keeps a person humble and Romans 4 is all about that very thing. Works righteousness is what the Pharisees and religious establishment had. A person like Paul - who came out of that snake pit - understood that QUITE well.

James 2:21 - Was not Abraham, our father, justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? This is THEOLOGICAL! It's every bit as practical as Paul's VERY SIMILAR statement, "What shall we say then that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works he hath whereof to glory but not before God." James is COUNTERING Paul's theology with an insight of his own. These two men disagreed to the tune of just about 180 degrees and anybody who understands how the language works (whether English, Hebrew or Greek) can readily see that. Unfortunately, we cannot see that because in order to see that, we have to gore our sacred cow that assumes the apostles were all one big happy family in the first century. They were not. Church is church and people are people.

We cannot get around the fact that two men (that we know about) cited Genesis 15:6 in their theology. Reading the New Testament from front to back reveals this indisputable reality. Only two men cite Genesis 15:6 in their theology. One man uses that verse as the cornerstone of his theology, the other uses it to disprove the theology of the first man. Paul referred to something he called "my gospel" and, since he calls the doctrine of justification by faith the cornerstone that the builders rejected then we can be pretty sure that Genesis 15:6 is the gospel to which he was referring. James tried to tell his readers what Paul was describing by his doctrine but all he did was erect a straw man. I use it in debating all the time so I recognize a straw man when I see one. Paul claimed that a man is justified by faith without regard to works (see Romans 4). James turns that on its head by defining "faith" as the mere belief in the existence of God. "Thou believest there is one God, ye do well. The devils also believe and tremble." (Jas 2:19) Where in Romans does Paul define faith as belief in the existence of God? He doesn't. The quality of faith that Paul describes is that faith that Abraham had when God justified him. "What shall we say then, that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works he hath whereof to glory - but not before God. But what saith the scripture? 'Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness.' Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace but of debt. But to him that worketh not but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." The two are not describing the same quality of faith but one counters the doctrine of the other using the same passage. How does he accomplish that? By turning Genesis 15:6 into a prophecy and not a done deal. It's clever but it's wrong. James 2:21-23 - Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Pretty slick, eh? Turn the passage into a prophecy and the doctrine goes away. Paul was going by the word as it was written. James had to massage it a little first. I prefer to go by the word of God as written, if it works, which Paul's gospel definitely works better than James'. We know they're talking about the same thing because they cite the same passage (Genesis 15:6). The language James uses is contentious. He's set out to disprove a theory and he uses the same source as his adversary to do just that. Listen to the language: James 2:21 - Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? The answer to that would-be rhetorical question is a resounding NO! Abraham was justified in Genesis 15. He didn't offer Isaac on the altar until Genesis 22. Furthermore, if James is correct in his epistle then Abraham was not justified UNTIL AFTER he was circumcised, which destroys Paul's doctrine and tears down his whole ministry to the gentiles. Nice try, though. I'm looking for someone who can reconcile these two apostles and you came about as close as anybody. Close, but no cigar.

I stumbled upon this video and I have a few "grievances" to share with the self-appointed prophet, Gerald Barnes. Consider this an open letter to anyone who may watch this video. You obviously do not know Joe and Deborah Oakley, nor the congregation of Grace Fellowship Church. I say this in love, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. After examining your channel, it seems that you invest more time and effort into tearing down the body of Christ than building it. Perhaps you should examine the plank in your own eye since you have so much to say about so many churches. I would encourage to spend some more time in the word, in prayer, and in worship seeking Gods direction. Test the spirits! You are operating under a divisive spirit and false humility. You are scattering, not uniting. Invest in winning souls, not picking apart Gods kingdom.

Something else I've noticed Not all the scriptures are KJV and youve only told part of the story Paul preached. He said those who are saved are not under the law. You conveniently forgot this. You also forget that if you break one commandment you break all commandments. Thats why the law didnt work. Go home and study AGAIN
