    We could also say : 老师长得很好看 ("The teacher is very good looking") where 长 originally means "grow". So I would have thought that 长得 can only be used for living things. But I hear expressions like : 这把椅子长得很好看 ("This chair is very good looking") I'm not sure if 长得 can correctly be used for chairs, etc. which do not grow.

    Greeting from Egypt. xie xie meinv. on a aide note The pinyin is very small, look you're teaching very simple chinese, content, meaning we don't recognize chinese characters, we mainly depend on pinyin to recognize the pronunciation and the tone but it's so small, however the Chinese and English are bigger with no reason. Good luck xiao mei mei

    In my dictionary, the pinyin for 给予惩罚 is given as "gěi yǔ chéng fá". I thought that 给 in 给予 is supposed to be pronounced as "jǐ". The English is given as "mete out punishment". Since they correctly used "mete" (rather than "meet" or "meat") maybe they know their stuff. But I still wonder if this 给 should be "jǐ".

    • @MandarinEssentials
      @MandarinEssentials 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is quite strange. I would use "jǐ" since 给 is always pronounced "jǐ" when it's in the word 给予. This is what is taught in schools in China nowadays. However, if you say "gěi yǔ" when talking to people, they would still be able to understand you.

    I have found that 哪里 doesn't always mean "where". It could mean "how could it possibly be" in a rhetorical question. In other words, it states that it's not possible. So 哪里哪里 means "how could I possibly be (as good as you say)" (It's not possible) … 他哪里有这么多朋友? This doesn't necessarily mean "Where does he have so many friends?" It could mean "How could he possibly have so many friends?" (It's not possible.) (A rhetorical question doesn't expect an answer.) … If I wanted to know "Where does he have so many friends?" I think I would use 在哪里 which definitely means "at what location". 他在哪里有这么多朋友?(This question expects an answer.)

    Stephanie老師,我有一個建議,我看TH-cam已經有很多學中文的平台,但是好像沒有一個人全用簡單的中文獨白。我最近在學習西班牙語,TH-cam Dreaming Spanish平台的super beginner和beginner的視頻都很有用!他們沒有用英文解釋,學生要看照片和猜測是什麼意思。我的建議你可以想一想😊,也許你的平台會跟其他人很不一樣,加油~

    Great video, thanks! Wondering if ‘what a coincidence’ would ever be used ironically by native speakers? In the UK ‘Fancy seeing you here!’ in mock surprise is quite a common greeting if you bump into someone in a setting where seeing them was entirely expected, or even if you you’d actually planned to meet them.

    • @MandarinEssentials
      @MandarinEssentials 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing this😃 I would say the phrase is mainly used when the speakers are genuinely very surprised, but I can totally see it being used as a nice small joke between close friends too!
