    Pure noob here. If I bought a good condition Atlas then add a sprint style tank and Manx seat would it look similar to yours? Or is there much more involved? Thank you.

    • @peter2ym8
      @peter2ym8 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to get hold of a petrol tank oil tank seat to match your frame. Wideline or Slimline. Atlasses came in Slimline, but this one is in Wideline. Then clip on handlebars, rear set foot pegs. That’s basics. The list goes on…..!

      @@peter2ym8 Thank you for the reply. The list going on sounds very involved haha. But not impossible for my near zero skills.The engine work is what I’m most keen to learn.

    Great work...I did the same modification on my 1949 rigid B31,bigger valves,Goldstar cams...but kept my magnito and 6volt lighting. Put a 23 engine sprocket and she goes really well! The music you used on your video I've chose the same tune on one of my videos too!

    Interesting, your gearbox has the main case from an earlier WD box with later internals and outer covers...No mention of the fact that the shafts should be shimmed correctly during assembly which is an important omission....

    Did you have any trouble getting hold of all the parts required ? .My b33 gearbox doesn't have too many issues ? , maybe an extra neutral , but I have a weird cyclic vibration , there were issues in the primary which I thought might fix it , like very tight chain , clutch basket out of alignment, worn triumph basket etc , ive made it better but it's still there a little bit , I was wondering if the bushes or bearings in the box are bad , I did find one other thing , the exhaust was jammed hard on the foot peg lug . I need to test ride see if that made a difference, Have you ever had anything similar ? Cheers

    • @peter2ym8
      @peter2ym8 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      BSA boxes generally are considered pretty robust. They have not had excessive power through them! Also I was told by someone older and wiser that these old 4 speed boxes should be nice and loose to work smoothly. So don't over engineer new bushes to 001" clearance. I needed a couple of new pinions because the dogs had worn and the "dovetail" no longer held the gears when engaged. Ebay is your friend. I found what I needed in Australia (I am UK based). The parts arrived in 10 days, and not expensive. Having said that, I have always managed to get parts I needed from UK suppliers.

    I think you have to remove the speedo drive to extract the layshaft, your kickstart ratchet gears are very worn, replace them.

  • @johnhampton5320

    Shouldn't a gasket or sealant be used between the casings before assembly?

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. Blink and you miss it. 12.43 ish. I use Hylomar Gold here. You can just see the colour on the jointing faces and the box the tube came in.

  • @chrislaunders8283
    @chrislaunders8283 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen pushrods miss the ball end of the rocker arm and still lift the valves, I always visually check them now looking up through the exhaust rocker cover holes with a bright light.

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, Chris! I had that happen on a Triumph 500 Daytona. It ran pretty well for about 100 miles, but let go after a gave it a bigger handful! I find you can usually feel a good position if the pushrods will spin true and freely.

  • @allenhanford
    @allenhanford ปีที่แล้ว

    When you say that the kickstart "slips" was there mechanical grinding that would indicate a problem with gears? I'm writing this as I prepare to fix the kick start on my BSA B33 but the slipping on it is smooth. That makes me to think the clutch is to blame.

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was clear to me that the slippage was in the gearbox, and not getting as far as the clutch. I could feel an initial resistance on the k/s which sometimes was good and started the bike. Other times there was a slight graunch and the k/s pushed down without the clutch spinning. As I am sure you know, if you experiment with the p/c case open it will be clear.

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! I have had Bonnevilles and single carb 650/750 Triumphs. For me the Dommie/Atlas is the way to go. I always strip and build engines, and with a sensible dynamic balance these Norton engines are pretty good on vibes. On the road (3-5000RPM) you can produce a vibe free ride. On track, once you get beyond that the adrenalin takes over!

    If thats not an old distributor for ignition what is it ? ,I thought all 750 Atlas and ss models reverted to magneto .

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is a dizzy! It’s also a Wideline. No Atlas left the factory like this. It’s also a phased crank and the Dizzy is modified accordingly.

    • @peterashley6257
      @peterashley6257 ปีที่แล้ว

      The single carb was standard on some of them, and that is how the engine arrived from USA. If it were still mine the next move would be twin carbs. The engine is interesting... lightened valve gear, and a phased crank. Consequently off-the-shelf electronic ignition not possible. I overhauled the Dizzy...shaft bearings, bob weight springs, a/r range. It runs well like this.

    I brought one in 1977 and get this ; it was titled in New Jersey as a ' 67 days days fays Atlas. I have heard that Dunstall didn't even sell whole bikes back then..There were items rhat came on the bike that encouraged me to think maybe.? It looked absolutely terrible when i first layed eyes on her. There was this ugly seat half hanging off and was being secured byva freyed bungee cord A sissy bar maybe a foot high hung off back. Femders were kinda cool though because they didn't have any rust. They were later identified as some sort of alloy. Unfortunately they were secured with too long a bolt and. It ripped a groove that seemed at least 1/4" deep! Rims looked alloy too and spokes? Stainless steel? The frame looked like it was plated with nickel and looked like it had same shape as Comando but minus isolastic rubber. Was told it actually handled better than comando because stiffer frame. I couldn't start it with kick starter ever. Hey it was on wrong side of the bike.Seemed like it rotated the wrong way too. Wait i must be thinking of another bike. The kick starter did rotate countrrclockwise because closest i ever got to starting it jiust backfired and sent me over the ape hangers ( ok, i am embellishing now. Not true ape hangers but they had. a 8" rise) My leg hurt for several days and when i tried again it seemed like it was going to be a repeat of the painful failure from s few days ago.. Luckily my parents house was on a steep driveway so i just paddled it in the righf direction and put it in what i thought was second but musta been first and then i remembered that not only was the shifter on wrong side it was a up first then neutral through forth were all down. Started right up! Don't remember using a choke on those big amals. Just tickled them twice when bike was cold

    I had one back in the 70's - with the standard clutch, and there was NO WAY to find neutral at a stop with a warm engine, mine too had a Commando front brake. You can't beat the classic feel of a Nailbed frame and Road-Hopper forks ;-)

      I have two of them. They do not vibrate excessively. Comfortable at 70 - 80MPH all day. They are longer stroke, so vibes are different. Don't sound as fragile as a Bonnie at that speed...I have had a few of them too, pre-unit, unit and OIF.
