09/20/2024, Wayne Benson from different angles, Series 1 of 4. Under Front Bumper & rear. #dbbb
This is Wayne Benson from West (Hwy 36) to East (Johnson Hollow/1274(Old Beaver Creek)). Doing this series a little different, I’m using a below the front bumper camera sis combining that with the ear camera for a fresh perspective. Doing it this way gives more depth to the forward view. It was very dry on this day and posed little if any issues with navigating the ruts. It still has the 2 main obstacles and a few more ruts making it a medium trail difficulty of about 4-5 depending on your ability and equipment. I am on 37’s and most everyone else is similar. There are several off shoots where you can make a wrong turn in this direction.

Awesome video
Thanks, I'm, way behind posting videos. Following us is the best way to see the latest vids.
🔥🔥🔥
What a great shot of that flex! Also good vehicle control on the driver's part, and good directions from you spotting!
Yeah it was pretty sloppy and took some control to stay out of that rut!
Awesome seeing the greenery-odd to think it was just 3 months ago. Really like the longer format videos, it’s nice to just follow along and enjoy the ride and be happy in the woods
Glad you liked it, the first half was really over 4hrs.
Those dogs are no joke, and fearless!!! I’ve done that ride the opposite way twice-nice to see it this way.
This is the harder and correct direction. The other way is less travelled and you run the risk of meeting others with no real room to turn around on this hill.
@@naturesglorycabin3792that’s the vibe I got about the direction-looking forward to going the more challenging way
Definitely had a great time thanks for taking us out!
Our pleasure. Hopefully we can do it again sometime.
Thanks for the series. Looks like a great 2 days in the woods! Merry Christmas and thanks for all the videos. 🎄
Thanks, the day was just too long to try to make one video. Merry Christmas!
Next time I go left and follow your path instead of trying to go the way I did. Hung up on my skid plate. Embarrassing! At least I didn’t have to winch out. 😂
No worries, it's all in good fun and with a group we'll always get you out.
Nice looking group and looks like a fun, low stress and easy ride in the woods.
Always a great day for a ride or 5.
Directions to and from trails are priceless
Thanks, I think it's important especially when they are publicly accessible.
Thanks for the part 2 video!
NO problem, More to come!
Another awesome trail, 1st time on Wayne Benson. Glad we did it the easy way.
It can get much tougher if you go the other way.
The Toyota looked good in the rear camera!
Yeah, he was behind me most of the day. Told me he came to meet us and of course for the meet. great guy.
The Toyota wave huh? lol, thanks Mark!
What the wave wasnt to me?
@@naturesglorycabin3792 of course it was!
Made the same mistake a year ago was not using map and followed Sheltoee trail until jeep would not fit between trees. had to back up to get to a turn around spot.
I had done this trail one other time in this direction and didn't notice all the off shoots. From the other direction you just drive it out. But it is much harder in the other direction.
The rain just made the run a little more of an adventure!
Yeah, it was definitely an adventure!
That area is amazing in the winter time, especially with snow!
Yeah, it is pretty cool.
Fishing wires through the firewall is no joke. Dealing with those mass connectors was pretty impressive.
Yeah, I was going to try to tackle it myself, glad I didn't.
Beautiful
Yeah, it's pretty impressive. Thanks.
Love those J-series. Trail doesnt look to crazy, practicing spotting?
It's not too bad in this direction but this was an easy ride with several stock vehicles that did drag over a few spots. The other way is markedly harder.
We had some stockers that needed a little more direction.
That’s a nice looking pickup
I thought it was cool too.
Wiring after the fact is often challenging. Great video, even when it can be nerve wracking getting out the drill!
Apparently the JLs wiring is different due to the electronics.
I ran brushy fork this past Sunday and was kinda disappointed as well about that rock climb 19:13.
Yep, it looks lie the rock climb may come back over time when the dirt gets washed out from between the rocks. What surprised me most is that after doing all of that the left all those deep holes on the ridgeline.
I gotta get back up there. Got lots for you to show me
Whenever you're ready, give us a shout and we'll arrange it!
Looks like it was a fun day
Most of it was, the downed tree not so much.
Did that trail for 2024 DBBB. Our trail leader and the rest of us had to winch up the trail coming out of Sinking Creek. He had a 4 Runner with front and rear lockers. You made it look easy. With open diffs on both sides I had to be winched.
It can be very rough unless you have good tires small lift and at least one traction device, preferably 2.
Good to see that Sinking Creek connects to New Virginia. Most maps show it stopping. I tried it with a buddy this spring and we couldn't make it up the rocks after the hard left. Too slippery, and his winch wasn't working. We were on 33 and 32" tires. Definitely doing this one soon! Thanks!
Yeah it's gotten tougher over time and wet just adds to the difficulty.
@@naturesglorycabin3792 Just got back from a weekend down there. So much rain from Wed-Friday! We did Sinking Creek Friday and I just couldn't make that obstacle at the 6-7 minute mark on Sinking Creek. I also had to winch at the end of the trail where it makes that sharp turn uphill to the left onto New Virginia. I was locked F/R but only on 32s. My companions were on 35's and 37's and made it up after a few attempts without winching. Finished well after dark...fun trail to explore!
Yeah it's pretty tough on anything less than 35s. I had done it in the past on 33s with the old TJ, I'm no are I could do it on 33s anymore without winching either. I just did it Sunday in the JL on 37s and I had more trouble than usual myself, but I did get up after a couple of tries an the beginning and took several on the last one.
Fantastic video. Weird seeing all the green trees
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I just rode new Virginia ridge and came out on cave fork this morning. Was odd to see this after I just got home😂 they’re both fun trails that a stock wrangler should have no problem with.
Stock wranglers and most anything with less than 33s and at least on traction device have lots trouble on Sinking Creek. Youn are almost any stock 4x4 cn do the route you are talking about.
Do you know if the gate that now unfortunately has No Mans Overlook closed to drive up on is before the elevated wooden bridge that leads to it, or after the bridge. Asking because I heard that although since it was closed to drive up, I've heard you can still actually walk out on the overlook. But not sure how far the walk is from the gate at which point access is denied. Really sucks you can't actually drive out on the rock, I was basing a whole trip on that 😢
Yes there is a gate you could drive up to the last time (last year) I was up there. Yes you can walk up, I have no idea how long the walk is.
That's a fun looking trail. Heading down this weekend and going to do some new trails. Still haven't done old fincastle, so might start there.
Yeah, it's fun but a long drive from the Slade area. Old Fincastle is fun too. This weekend Fri & Sat is the Annual Meet & Greet ride. Looks like there will be about 300 rigs all over the area. May be more congestion on the trails than you want.
@@naturesglorycabin3792 who puts that on?
Ohio River Four Wheelers. It has a facebook page and a web address Fb- Meet and Greet Ride, or web - www.meetandgreetride.com/
We usually run Pistol Creek the other way. Those mud pits at 15min can definitely get you if you are not expecting them! Great video, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, mud is always "fun" and the wetter the more challenging.
Was researching trails two days ago and was wondering about pistol creek. Great timing on vid!
Glad it was good timing for you. When you coming back out?
@@naturesglorycabin3792 wife has been traveling a lot. Gotta take care of her kids. Be out VERY soon I hope!
So are there any lookouts left that you can actually drive out on?
Ravens overlook and picnic point in Hollerwood, which is a fee area
@@naturesglorycabin3792 ok I thought Ravens overlook you can technically drive up to, but doesn't appear that's there's room to actually get the get out on the rock for a photo opp for example. Looks like you drive up and physically walk out from the trail to the overlook. That's why I was initially so interested in No Mans Overlool cause you could drive out actually on the overlook edge, until that got ruined apparently. Not sure about the picnic point in Hollerwood.
You can park very close, there is a loop to turn around. Walk to overlook is maybe 20 yards. Yes you can walk to on it or photos.
Been doing a bunch of research about this area specifically cause I potentially may make a trip soon. Are you aware of the lookout that just off and overlooks Cave Fork Rd? It's somewhat near just east, the intersection of where Cave Fork meets Bald Rock Fork Rd/Lairson (same road that intersects with the start of Sinking Creek trail. I've heard that it was inaccessible now due to people getting it shut down. If you're aware of the spot, is this true? I'd hate to waste a trip. I can send you the exact coordinates if you need.
I think the overlook you are referring to is "No Man's" overlook off of Fixer/Lairson. Access to the overlook was blocked to vehicles the last time I was up there but you could drive to the base in and out. You could still walk up to the overlook. I have heard from one person that the entrance at the creek had a cable across it. I haven't verified this, but if it is you can't see it from Fixer/Lairson. I believe I have a video that has this (No Man's) in & out and another called Raven's overlook.
@@naturesglorycabin3792 OK thanks I will look more into this. I would like to get the jeep out on that overlook if possible and honestly, I don't want to waste a trip down there if I can't get to it. I actually sent you an email prior to your response so you may see that it has the exact coordinates and a reference video from another person on it if you want to check the nature glory email
First off nice video! I've watched a few of yours now. I may have the opportunity to finally hit up the DBBB soon and Sinking Creek may be an option. I was following your route exactly by map up to the point of the right at Zachariah Creek Lake (at which point it becomes Lairson Rd technically but for all intensive purposes if you want to still refer to that as being Fixer Leeco than understandable. However, following that to the point at which it leads to the Y intersection you speak of and the start of Sinking Creek, than technically, on your map at 6:32 and throughout your verbiage, you refer to entering the "start" of Sinking Creek off of New Virginia Ridge Rd which is contradictory to all accounts of every map I've referenced (Google maps, On-X, Apple Maps, etc) If you're traveling the route East to West which is apparently shown and implied, than New Virginia Ridge isn't until basically the end of the Sinking Creek Trail farther West. The start of Sinking Creek East to West (as implied) comes of off Bald Rock Fork Rd or even continuing to refer to it as Lairson or Fixer Rd would still even make sense considering the road/route changes names along course. Regardless Lairson, Fixer, Bald Rock would all understandably make more sense than that start being off of New Virginia Ridge Rd. For someone potentially planning a visit, that is rather confusing. On no map, is that Y intersection with the oil rig at the start of the trail, referred to as New Virginia. Just saying.
Using the "Official" Back country byway map is where I get these names. One is crowd sourced and there for can be unpredictable. If you need a guide to show you. Let me know when you are around and hopefully I can show you the way. New Virginia ridge road does go for some reason in the directions I show. Yes it does "Start" at another point at the end of Sinking creek on the water. It can be confusing especially if you have not ran these trails before. Sinking creek is not on the Back country byway but does run adjacent for quite a bit to it.
That was a bad storm
Yes it was
Great video. Everyone could learn from this. Thanks
Yeah, I made the mistake so hopefully you won't.
Always happy to see the jeep keeping up,with the Toyotas 😂😂😂. Great looking video-liked the music during the drive times.
You meant the toyota's keeping up ...sometimes....with the Jeeps.
Ya noticed they had me go through what they thought may be deep water? It was fun I don't care what you drive it's all about the fun.
I`m not on FB. I googled DBBB and there is no info about it that I can find. Be nice to have some way to find out about these trails. I might come down.
This particular video is old in relation to the current condition of the trail, for example a wood bridge is now over the creek where we had to go down into and up the creek to cross. The official Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway map is available on cartotracks.com and runs on the aveza app for both Android and iOS.
I plan to do this trail on the 12th October
Have fun. Like I always say don't go alone especially of you are unfamiliar. You never know what can happen. I'd with you but I'm committed to a pre-ride for the Nov 1st Meet & Greet ride.
So many trails to explore! Nice to see other options to Kat Hard 2. It was fun, but so, so muddy..... We like Pistol Creek a lot, but doing other trails while down there makes the drive south from Callies more enjoyable. Thanks for posting! I'll be down there mid-November! Can't wait!
Yeah, you definitely need to plan to do more when you drive this far or stay closer. Glad you liked it.
Looked like a fun day. I need to get back out in the trails when I finish working on the cabin
It was fun but a long day for little trail on this day.
We did Spencer Ridge after we left you Mark. Man, camera makes it look too tame. 😂 Well, I'm on 34" tires now, so looking for you to take me on something harder, maybe sinking creek.
My camera is mounted lower on the rear and show a better perspective, dash caber not so much. Do you have front & rear lockers limited slip? Sinking creek can be rough!
@@naturesglorycabin3792 Center diff lock, no fronts or rears, but I'm up for the challenge and if worse comes to worse, got a wrench
Alrighty, we can give it a try!
Looked like a blast out there. Those were some rough trails.
I was so fun I broke Muddy Blue!
@@naturesglorycabin3792 definitely a sad part. Is it fixed yet?
I have to call the guy today, but it should be.
So much mud! Looks like it was a great ride and as always a lot of fun. Have you seen the new off road license plates Kentucky has? Sorry the day ended on a tow truck.
It was muddy and made it harder too. Yes I've seen several of the OHV plates.
Thanks for Cold Iron in particuar, I was really interested to see it.
Glad you liked it, my intent is to show how to get there & back, show short entertaining sections of trails I've done many times and more detailed versions of new trails I had not previously covered. Glad you liked it!
That drain pipe can be a menace! Great looking ride!
Yes it can, glad you enjoyed the show!
Do you do tours? I’d love that
Yes we regularly take folks around the backcountry byway. We use the Facebook Page to coordinate all of that. Nothing formal.
Have you guys taken the new expansion yet? I'm very curious about those new trails. Also, what air compressor do you use to air up? I wonder if a basic air up device on amazon like $60 will be ok to do on my tacoma
I did a little at the spring dbbb meet and more on the last day. "Most" of the southern expansion, although scenic there is a lot of gravel & blacktop. There are 3 or 4 harder trails of varying difficulty depending on weather, Ross/Pistol Creek, Rader ridge, Herdes Spring Rd and another I can't remember. We have done Ross/Pistol Creek & Rader Ridge. Depending on where you stay it can be a long drive to get the the southern expansion. We stayed at Callies just outside of Stanton and it took over an hour to get to the trails. There are other campgrounds at the southern end, Turkeyfoot, S-Tree to name a couple. As far as airing up. Most of the cheaper compressors start to lose efficiency after the first tire and get worse the longer you use them.. However if Money is an issue(ain't it always!) start out how you can and work your way up as you can. I use the MoorflateTenSix with the 4way air/up/down tool. I ran the others myself until I was able to step up. It is not cheap. I can air up or down in about 10 minutes 35>18down & 18>35 up. Thanks for watching our videos.
That point when u asked me if we were stuck or stopped… we were stuck and he was trying to maneuver his way out on his own. He asked me not to say we were stuck quite yet. 😊 we got it! We had lots of fun with you all thank you for an amazing trip
After the fact I should have had you closer to me so I could have directed you better. Glad you all had fun, that's what it's all about.
What radios do you guys use?
We started with midland GMRS and didn't have great success. The seem on not every occasion not transmit after 4-5 hours. So we switched to Tidradio amzn.to/3zfYogc they are usb rechargeable and com with 2 radios and 2 extra batteries. We still have the Midlands we loan out to folks that don't have a radio.
@@naturesglorycabin3792 awesome thank you. I’ve used basic two ways for trails when we’re all close but for long road trips and convoys or high speed riding I want something with better range.
Most GMRS's are good for about a mile on open country, much less when in the mountains.
