    My dad had a Corvair. He tried to sell it to my brother in-law and said listen to that engine. My brother in-law said, I already have a weedeater. LOL One of my best friends got a gremlin as his first car. We thought it was pretty cool. I disliked this video for all the incorrect content and that AI generated voice. AI NEEDS to GO AWAY!!

    That 60s videophone had a cool, stylish look to it. So many devices that came out just didn’t sell because it wasn’t the right time. I am amazed that we now live in a world which was depicted in fantasy stories when I was young and most things we take for granted now would be considered science fiction just a century ago. Consider: I walk into a store and the doors open without a doorman present and close again, behind me. I go in an escalator to the third floor without need to climb stairs or walk very far. I gaze out the window on to other huge buildings. I receive a videophone call (signal permitting) and can communicate with another human, face-to-face, on the other side of the world. If I could go back a couple of centuries and tell someone about this, they’d try me as a witch! 😂

    Where I'm from the yugo is legendary, compared to the other cars available it was one of the better cars. Unless ofc for those who could afford Opels, Renaults, VWs or BMWs and Mercedes bought when working mostly in Germany. Renault models were also put together in Slo and Cro. The bad rep it got mostly from movies and because of much higher standards in the us, resulting from an overabundance of material, traditionally no need for fuel efficiency which carried over until today despite one real and numerous perceived shortages, traditional almost no care for workers in the golden age of fuel inefficient cars... Anyway I personally didn't like the yugo much, kinda ugly (I found the 101 even uglier), outdated (the body design is actually VW's from '70-71 which is rarely mentioned), the pedals in the slower model are very close together which makes tight shoes a necessity, also never mentioned anywhere. Apparently there are legendary british sports cars where the space is so tight it makes a comfy straight driving position impossible (Lotus? Not sure..), so ergonomics is a far cry from murican cars - otoh, there the safety standards are questionable, various issues up to today's visibility and size of SUVs. Let's see the rest then, if I can take it. Nope, Fuegos's quirks, some people just shrugged off quirks "oh yea it does that", why not do that when you have this extremely beautiful car? Prowler was a statement, period. Riviera? Ok, not everyone would buy it anyway, why make such a fuss? Corvair tricky? I guess, especially if you are heavy on the pedals, I probably would have to try it. Many others mentioned still lasted for years, just like the yugo, outdated in the early 80's it lasted a decade? And was still sold decades later as "Tempo". Ah well, thank you for all the info between the lines.

    Automatic seatbelts did not "shoot" up. I love how, in one sentence, it is noted it started the occupants at start up (like they didn't see it) and the next statement is how occupants had to wrestle against it to get out (the only wrestling was the occasional snag of the inside most hand). In reality, the reason they failed was due to the frequent issues with the motors, especially after crashes. Which was why later iterations included a button release, but those defeated the purpose. Also, three point seatbelts existed BEFORE the automated seat belt. They were just another attempt at advancement.

    • @LarryStauth
      @LarryStauth 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The death of the Corvair was not due to the suspension. After Nadar's report, Chevrolet recalled and fixed the issue. What killed the Corvair was the advancement of the Aluminum Block engine. At that time, people cooled their engines with straight water (you can still see some of the evidence along highways occasionally). The problem being, when you heat water in aluminum, it oxidizes quickly, leading to engine blocks developing issues. Thanks to the Gas Crisis of the 1970's, there was a push for fuel economy. Some chemical companies sold automakers on utilize the lighter weight block engines, but with the understanding they would need their product to protect the engine... the chemical was ethylene glycol.. we commonly know it as Anti-freeze and/or Coolant. But, the Corvair had a damaged reputation, much like the Ford Pinto, any Fiat, the Porsche 914 and many others.

    • @LarryStauth
      @LarryStauth 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The Car Phonograph was a "hype" product. It was never in any of the practical vehicles, because only the teenie-boppers were into 45s. Young drivers weren't buying new cars and they were never buying anything "optional". 8-tracks and Cassettes did not become popular in vehicles until the Music Industry helped subsidize the cost of making them standard. The Edsel's demise was far beyond the Automatic shifter buttons. They had major mechanical issues from the jump, it's Marketing Campaign was the story of legend (and poor use of hype), Ford did not have a clear market strategy and didn't fully understand the Market of the late 1950's... when there was increased spending and the look of the Edsel looked horrendous... it was obvious it was thrown together and the Oldest son of Henry Ford was just trying to put his name over his Dad's... And you could fill this list with any "new" car design from the 1970's and 1980's, not just the Yugo. The VW Rabbit, AMC Spirit, Chevy Sprint, Ford Fiesta, Ford Festiva, Olds Firenza, Pontiac Acadia (Chevy Chevelle) and the list goes on... Lastly, you want failed creations, Chevrolet in the 1980's and their Clutch "Paw" tightener. Designed to prevent the feeling of a loose clutch peddle... they were cheap plastic and frequently busted off teeth.. nothing quite like trying to shift in rush hour traffic and have your left foot slam to the floor. Thing of nightmares.

    If I remember correctly, the motivation for the automatic seatbelt was that it was cheaper, at the time anyway, than airbags. Congress was wanting to make airbags mandatory. So automakers proposed automatic seatbelts as a cheaper option to improve safety.

    First VCR I saw was in 1978 while my dad was stationed in Spain, we watched Battlestar Galactica recorded and sent from the states. I remember playing Pong on the T.V. in 1977 before going to Spain. Also remember Calico electronic Quarterback game the first handheld game also while in Spain. After coming back to the states, I remember owning Intelevision and most of the games. Then in 1986 I got the Commodore 64. After that was Nintendo 64 before getting my first 386 pc. I also got many watches in between such as the casino calculator and remote watches. I was an early adaptor of the Handspring and the Palm pilot and Windows CE devices. I can remember getting a special cable to hook to my Kyocera cellphone to make my Palm Pilot a Smartphone! For almost 20 years it seemed I'd upgrade computers to play the next great PC title until about 2016 when computers had already outpaced most games and upgrading became less important. These days i mostly use smartphones as they have caught up with most PC's and even surpassed them in many ways. Once in a while I'll look back fondly on these things especially my Sony Walkman!

    When I was a kid in the early 70s, I had a cassette recorder very similar to the one this video starts with, but mine came with a cool fake leather carrying bag with a shoulder strap that perfectly fit the recorder with strategic holes so you could plug in power, microphone and so on - and it had a flap you could close it up with completely to keep it dry. There was a compartment to store the microphone of course. I carried it around and recorded 'stuff' everywhere. The whole assembly also looked quite a lot like a Star Trek tricorder. I loved that thing. And the picture phone was one of the favourite attractions of the permanent Philips 'building of the future' - the Evoluon - that most Dutch kids of my age probably visited several times with family or on school trips. Two things always come up when people talk about visiting the Evoluon back in the seventies: the long line to have a go at the video phone (they basically hooked up two that could talk to each other) and the massive metal wireframe dinosaur they built in the main lobby that would move its head on its long neck towards the loudest sound in the hall, causing the place to usually be filled with ear piercing shrieks from children trying to get its attention. It moved surprisingly fast considering its size.
