That Wild Fell cover is gorgeous!
Le Guin (one of my favorite writers!) is never about the science or tech, it's about people and ideas (sociological/philosophical, not techy ones). There's a lot of SciFi like that - for me, that's the kind I like. I'm less fond of space battles or tech-driven stuff where the characters are often thin. Yeah, The Martian is more the latter kind, and I did find that fun, but I prefer Le Guin. The Earthsea Trilogy is fantasy, not SciFi. You might want to try The Left Hand of Darkness next - I'm actually planning on re-reading that in January; it's been years.
I'm doing the Climathon this year and I'm halfway through the 2nd to last book and am about to start the final one, so it's looking good! I've really enjoyed this - are you thinking of doing it again next year? I've liked tracking in Storygraph, but one quibble I have is that it won't let you see, for example, what your friends picked for each prompt. That would make it so much more fun. As for the Water prompt, I picked On Time and Water by Andri Snær Magnason, which is available on both audio and ebook on Hoopla, so if your library has Hoopla, you don't have to buy it... (and I thought it was good! a lot of time spent on glaciers rather than talking about open water, turns out). How great you can read in Polish! I've been reading about 10 books a year in my two stronger non-native languages, and last year I added three in a newer language, but I'd like to up that next year. I'm not living immersed in any of them like you are 😢 so reading's a great way to keep up. I've been loving Olga Tocarzcuk recently - have you read any of hers? I'm waiting for her latest to come in the mail.
I love to re-read favorites; I always like finding others who do the same. I'm on my fourth book for non-fiction November. And I'm not sure what's on tap for the rest of 2024. Thanks for another enjoyable video.
I see you also make impossible end of year reading plans haha. Good luck with whatever you do decide to finish 2024 on
😊
IS IT SNOWING?!? ☃🤗
My book club read Bodies Under Seige a week after the election...definitely depressing =/ Brain on Fire sounds great--adding to my tbr!
Bodies Under Siege sounds like a book I couldn't handle - thank you for reading and reviewing it
Yay for loving le Guin! she's such a gem. I would say its probably not super important to have understood the technology/science Shevek was sharing & developing there. The Ansible is fundamental to this meteoric progress of the interstellar society of the Hainish books though, so this was almost like a prequel explaining its background, where going to some of the other Hainish Cycle books you might get it better by hearing its impact and how it is in practice.
Native Son is one of my absolute favorite books. Hope you enjoy!
Hi! I found your channel because someone commenting on one of my videos said that we'd both recommended the same book - Leave Only Footsteps by Conor Knighton, so I came by to check it out! I enjoy sci fi thrillers (like The Martian). I haven't read any Ursula K. LeGuin, though. Bodies Under Siege sounds terrifying. I've enjoyed some of Scott Westerfeld's novels, especially Afterworlds. I've heard good things about Brain on Fire, though I live with a complex chronic illness that is hard to diagnose, so it's a little close to home! I've been so wanting to read Before the Coffee Gets Cold - I love time travel themes - so twisty and thought-provoking. I listened to Richard Wright's memoir, Black Boy. Nice to "meet" you! We seem to have similar reading tastes :)
😊
I read 'Brain on Fire' a couple of years back; it was great but also horrifying. It's hard to accept that it was up to the author's family to insist in getting more opinions until a proper diagnosis was made, and if it had been for some doctors she would've spent the rest of her life in a psychiatric ward. I just finished "The Monsters We Defy" by Leslye Penelope and it was a lot of fun (set in 1920s DC Black Broadway, with mysterious disappearances and a fantasy heist).
Immersive reading helps my focus too. My Messy Bookshelf loved the Pickwick Papers after starting unsure of how she and Dickens would get along, so maybe his first is worth a "lauk." Twisted humor:
This is absolutely a top tier comment. You have also made me want to check out Pickwick now! =)
Thanks, Ania!
I've read "A Christmas Carol" and nothing beyond that has tempted me.
For some reason I feel as though I will not love A Christmas Carol. I am putting off reading it for now.
😊
the construction ☠️☠️ love your reading vlogs ❤️❤️ your shirt in the end is so gorgeous!!
construction morphs into loading trucks, a dream come true. and thank youu <3
I did not like The Secret Life of Bees! Which might mean you will enjoy it? xD
I loved The secret Life of Bees but couldn’t get into Traveling with Pomegranates. I’m going to try again!
Here's to high hopes for great books finding more good people!👏
You're so good at letting go of the possibilities--I want to get better at that! 🥰
😊
Yep, I’ve gotta give myself a little more leeway on expecting to remember a lot of details from nonfiction. I even highlight in my Kindle as if I need to give a book report and then stress out when I can’t recount the details to my partner. 🤦♀️
non-fiction love!
😊
always yes to braiding sweetgrass. teddybears?? hmm... 🤪
Darn dinosaur names! lol that's a fun memory to reflect on 🥰
Yay Nonfiction! Ya know I actually took notes to do this tag last year and then never did it. Will see if I can get to it this year! ❤
I would have to replace that urge with some other activity that gives a dopamine hit, if I wanted to cut back on the bakery and bookstore treats I *can* tend to go overboard on... hmm. dance class? but you pay for that and it doesn't make sense to do one at a time... will ponder... ideas welcome!
It depends on how you approach it! I generally do not include experiences in my no-buys. So for example, if I wanted to go pay for a bouldering class, I will do that because I am not adding any material items into my life. But my focus on a no-buy is cutting out material items and focus on environment. But if your focus is on saving money, then maybe experiences would need to be cut, or lowered too. =) There is no right answer =)
@ hmm, so a no-buy-consume vs no-spend… I hadn’t considered that distinction. 🤔
@@MargaretPinard yes exactly! it has to fit whatever the persons goals are =)
what is the underconsumption trend??? hasn't come to my FYP 😆
It is essentially showing people using items in a less 'influencer' way. So for example, instead of showing off the ten shower gels someone has in their bathroom, they show their one shower gel that they use until it's gone and then they replace it. Or fixing a hole in a shirt, instead of going out to buy a new one.
I do have a library and it makes me happy. Over the years I have gotten better at getting rid of books and curating my library more. 😊💙
Feeling out what makes you happy is super important! And knowing when to let go is also good =D
this is such a great, nuanced video!
I appreciate it!
so proud of you
Thank you boo <3
In the City of Bikes sounds really interesting. I love biking, but Trinidad is a TERRIBLE place for biking. Tbh, our infrastructure is not even pedestrian friendly - it's primarily catered to drivers despite us having a lot of pedestrians and non driving commuters. It would definitely be interesting to spend some time in Amsterdam or a bike friendly city, just to see what it's like. Edit: For some reason, I'm not seeing my comment response to this, but I also said that I'd love to see your response to the critical reading discussion and thank you for the shout out!
I feel similar comparing Canada, where I grew up, to Poland, where I now live. In Canada there was some biking infrastructure but it was limited and felt quite dangerous. It was not common at all to commute by bike. However, it's a total 180 in Poland. Almost anywhere I feel as though I can get to by bike and I verrry rarely feel unsafe. It makes a huge difference in my desire to bike! Infrastructure is key. And I don't see the response either but yes! I am planning my video response to yours <3!
😊
My selections 😊 Code - The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code Path - The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative Shot - Patient Zero: A Curious History of the World’s Worst Diseases Join - Cultish: The Language of Fanatacism
ooh! your pick for path sounds right up my alley! also, i have read cultish and i really enjoyed it =D
Subtly showing off your bike in the background... you're a true cyclist, lol.
haha! It always sits there but yes, i am not mad about it sneaking in :P
Great picks!! Michael Pollan is always entertaining. No Logo looks intimidating but interesting!!
I am very intimidated by No Logo. I get along with Kleins articles that I've read, but this hunker of a book, we shall see.
I liked your rationales for your choices! I'm building my possibilities right now. I read Naomi Klein's Doppelganger earlier this year and No Logo was mentioned in that so it's fun to see it here. -Becks
Ooh I need to read Doppelganger too. I am excited to see what your choices end up being!
Wonderful picks!! I loved how you fit them into the challenge words - it's like you already knew them when you selected the books last week. Expert level 🤌🏼
My spidey senses were tingling! I am so pumped, thank you again! <3
😊
I have No Logo and have have held off unhauling it bc I am resisting due to how old it is, since it might be outdated... can I maybe read with you so that I can finally get it done???
I have thought about the same thing, I am curious how relevant it still will be since it came out when I was in primary school lol. And yes please let's read it together! If it ends up feeling too old, we can always DNF =)
@@WellTraveledBooks excellent! Voxer? Or email?
Fellow Nonfiction Baddie over here! I consistently see NF making up a third of my reading, how bout y'all?
I just checked my storygraph! I'm at 35% non-fiction for this year. I was trying to aim for 40%, maybe November will help me out =D
That's a wonderful list for non-fiction November. I haven't read this Michael Pollan but I have read "How To Change Your Mind" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and like you I get along with his writing qutie well. The only book I've added to my list for sure is "The Five Dysfunctions of a.Team" (for the Join prompt) because we're reading that in November in my book club at work. I have some ideas for the other prompts, and they will be a lot more enjoyable that reading about how to be more effective in making moeny for cpaitalists. Thank you!
So glad to hear that you also like Pollan! Hahaha I love that you are not super excited for your book club book. It does not sound super up my alley either! Very cool that you have a book club at work though =)
not the bike in the background. It is sneaking its way into your content. 1 more year and you are a bikefluencer 😂
hello? what brands would like to sponsor me to bikepack full time? i am ready.
🤣
also nice sweater 😀
i aim to collect all the cool sweaters
THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR I AM SCREAMING 🧡
THE EXCITEMENT!
you? gotten into biking? i have no idea what you are talking about 😂😂✨
The fact that the alert for this comment came while I was riding... hahaha <3
