Test run with Windscreens fitted on my Karda EATSRHPV

I've finally fabricated and fitted the Polycarbonate windscreens for my Karda EATSRHPV tilting trike. Roof, side panels and rear body yet to come. I haven't noticed much of an impact on speed at my normal commuting speeds on the flat but I lose a couple of kmph on fast downhill sections. However, I'm ok with that as this body is more about turning the vehicle into a more comfortable commuter ve...

    Tilting trikes has been a holy grail idea for a long time and this is a fantastic piece of work, but it brings a lot of complication and weight to what is already an inevitably quite complicated and heavy design. I'm sceptical about the pay-off - do you find it's really worth it, setting aside your pride in what you've achieved with the build?

    • @martinhill9011
      @martinhill9011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob, this trike was designed from the ground up around the electric hub motor meaning that I built it stronger to handle the higher speeds enabled by that E-assist so the extra weight isn't a problem. What the tilting has allowed is for the trike to be taller with a higher seating position to see over the hoods of cars around me while still maintaining a nice narrow track width of only 80cm allowing me to fit through the bollards of pretty much any bike path thanks to the tilting which saves me from over-balancing when cornering at speed. Here is a video of the trike in action where you see it leaning into curves at speed. th-cam.com/video/vZ6-_mKERUg/w-d-xo.html I've frankly been amazed how well it works. It's not perfect yet as there are a few rough edges and some design changes I plan to make to the front suspension geometry to allow me to tilt to a greater angle, but it is my reliable regular commuter vehicle that has proved itself over these last few years. Here one of my latest videos that shows the lightweight roll-cage, windscreens and roof that I've now fitted to it: th-cam.com/video/WYAoAAKhMu0/w-d-xo.html

    Hello . I ve watched a lot of your videos because i design an upright leaning tricycle , you have done a great job. Maybe it does that because the rod end attaches too far inside towards the centerline of the bike and it gets to a neutral possition and then it surpasses it . May i ask i ve seen from an other video of yours you have oriented (i will try to explain this right if i can ) the ball joint hole parallel to the ground instead of perpendicular to it , that has the advantage that the ball joints dont limit the leaning , but in the other hand they limit the steering angle (correct me if i am wrong) how much steering angle does your bike have at this setup an generally whats a number that you believe is a good steering angle for a reverse trike ?

    • @martinhill9011
      @martinhill9011 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Antonis, yes, this iteration of the steering geometry suffered from quite a few problems! I significantly re-engineered the steering linkages to eliminate the possibility of the control arms hyper-extending as you can see in this video: th-cam.com/video/koADanl4-vo/w-d-xo.html . With regards the rod ends, in this later iteration, they actually have two axis of movement so that the steering angle range is not compromised by having such a large range of leaning angles. If you look closely at the rod ends, you will see that they freely rotated within the tubes that the rod ends are mounted in. Hope that makes sense.

    You have the rates about right but what I did observe was at full tilt the outside wheel would be virtually horizontal given there will be an angle to the axle from the spindle! This could be rectified by reducing the static angle on the uprights or by lengthening the upper "A" arms!

    Hi. Thanks for the videos (they give ideas for our projects). If possible, I would like to know why there is no Ackermann. (Ackermann Direction Geometry) Or is there some kind of ackerman calculated? In this case the steering arms do not point at the rear axle. I would like to know your comments. Thank you

    • @martinhill9011
      @martinhill9011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did indeed calculate Ackermann Compensation geometry for the steering tie rods though it is a bit difficult to see with the kingpin castor angles making it difficult to spot in the video. Also, when tilting, the Ackermann compensation gets less accurate at tighter steering angles. (although at higher speeds that result in greater tilt angles, the trike tends to rely more on castor steering and longer radii of turns meaning Ackermann is not as big a problem as I thought it would be)

    @2:40 it doesn't look like the suspension arms are set up correctly. There should be a direct line through the top fulcrum through the bottom one and to the center of the contact patch of the tire. That might be why it seems hard to control in your videos.

      Hi Frankie, are you referring to the steering kingpins? If so, if you look closely, you'll see the kingpins are those black cylinders with silver tops between the outer suspension tie rod ends that are angled outwards and downwards which do in fact intersect the centres of each tyre's contact patch. This means the trike doesn't suffer any bump steer or brake steer and is actually very easy to control by tilt steering thanks to the castor-angle of each kingpin.

      @@martinhill9011 I meant the suspension a-arms. Look at the way Steintrikes does the same thing except their upper a-arms are shorter and end right above the kingpin axis. :)

      @@FlankyFrankie Unfortunately that doesn't work for tilting suspension geometries. The A-Arms have to be equal length and parallel to each other for the wheels to stay parallel to each other (and the body of the vehicle) when tilted. Not to say my geometry is perfect though - Sometime in the future I plan to replace the front wheels with dished wheels that would allow me to mount the kingpins vertically within the wheels to better maintain the correct Ackerman compensation angles at extreme tilt. I'll also be mounting the inner suspension pivots on the centre-line of the vehicle to maintain the same wheel-track width even at extreme tilt and to reduce the acute angles of the steering tie-rods at extreme tilt angles. All of these changes are pretty necessary if I'm going to be able to increase my maximum tilt angle from the current 30° to closer to 45°.

    OMFG !! i never thought of that !!! I thought i needed to build a light weight frame both rear and back for lights to raise my visible profile in case some muppet trys to squash me !..THANKYOU! so much , i shall look into this .ITS possible ? if you stabilised the flag it would be seen better and not look like an approaching UFO.. heehee ..thanks again martin .

    Martin-Is there any way to dampen the noise level of the components? Trike riding should be quiet and peaceful. Maybe it is the closeness of the GoPro to the action? Why do you suppose the big trike manufacturers have not so far used double-wishbone suspension?

    • @martinhill9011
      @martinhill9011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! Half the problem was that my trike was quite noisey back then. This footage was from before I oiled and properly isolated the suspension pivots and the chain was rubbing against a guide close to the camera. Even then the noise was not as obvious from the rider's position and is much better now. :-) Some manufacturers use double-wishbone suspension, notably Stein Trikes and a few others, but it can be heavy hence some of the alternatives like ICE trike's ingenious compact front suspension elements.
