The entire “ abduction “ was a complete hoax. Walton was about to lose his entire contract with the local paper mills for failing to produce as required. He was a stoner and frequent recreational drug user, as were most of his crew. For years campers and locals saw strange lights around Snowflake from helicopter flights originating from nearby military installations. They had various light configurations and they would shine them during their flights, and some of these flights were very low level. They would look exactly like some weird UFO from the dark night sky. Locals had been seeing these for years and would laugh when campers or people not from there would freak out over seeing what they thought was a UFO. Walton was never abducted, he went on a speed/weed/drunk binge at a friend’s place and was out of pocket for most of a week. His co workers made up the abduction story as a joke, and as rumors go, it spread out of control. The cops actually pieced it together and knew Walton was lying, but it had gotten national attention and they just kept their mouths shut out of fear of humiliation.
