I Was Saved but Never Felt Safe - Life After Faith w/ Jamal Luke
Jamal grew up as god-fearing Christian who was passionate about bringing others to Jesus. But as an adult, life caused him to ask tough questions that exposed the shallowness of his faith. That's when, it too, fell apart.

มุมมอง 1.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
How does Christianity teach people to deal with unpleasant emotions and unhealthy mindsets? If it does this by introducing even more harmful ideas into the equation, then it cannot be good for our mental health. Well, it isn't. Many have been traumatized by "god" and they don't even know it. On this Very Important episode, we dive DEEP into [our own] religious trauma. Chapters: 00:00 Introducti...

Science and math work, I have faith in civil architects and engineers to build a bridge, yes they are fallible but I've seen our society thrive in this area, can't say the same for non sensible beliefs without evidence...It's funny these ppl a lot of times dont question conspiracy theories the way they do basic facts about life

    The first caller asked how one handles a "scientist vs. scientist" situation in which highly credentialed people are on both sides of an argument. This is a NORMAL, EVERYDAY scenario. It is the scientific process in action! Experts in a field are constantly challenging one another's work and performing the vetting process for us to ensure that a consensus doesn't form around low quality information and poorly supported arguments.

      Robert Malone should.be researched. Details are not hard to find on line. I kept up with the vaccine controversy. For me it came down to global consensus. Tens of thousands of global virologists came to majority consensus that the vaccines were safe and effective. That was enough for me. The larger the conspiracy the least likely it is in my mind to be true. Believing a global corporate interest could silencee 99% of experts in global virology (every university, research institute, and organizations even in nations with conflict) is far too unlikely. Referencing Einstein and Newton is fallacious in my opinion due to those men being extreme anomalies at a time when their fields were not fully matured. Of course no field in science claims absolute perfection but the overwhelming evidence today can be corroborated with global data shared through global networks and backed up by extensive research models. Attempting to debunk the entire global field focusing on an outlier who is on Joe Rogan or other TH-cam outlets would be extremely unlikely in my view. Not impossible but very unlikely. I'll trust global scientific consensus over outliers in fields where I have no expertise.

    i like what j-wit said about enjoying life here and now. you don't need an objective purpose for that, even a nihilist (not saying he is) can do the carpe diem thing. ironically, J-wit is Biblical, because if you deconvert you might as well say with Paul in 1cor 15: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” . what I enjoy most about this content is the emphasis on reasoning logically and critically. like that idea in the Bible when you cast out one demon and keep “ the house ” empty 7 more will come back. the analogy for this episode is that a deconverted person should avoid trading one spiritual thing for another due to the lack of critical thinking. one can start to educate themselves by learning the methodology detectives and investigative journalist employ and the scientific method. tip; regular listener of ichapod and Brady and Jwit themselves will probably enjoy checking out some of the work by people like Randi James en Derren Brown in light of the spiritual and supernatural (exposing). or the series called Psych. which is about a crime consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department whose "heightened observational skills" and impressive eidetic memory allow him to convince people that he solves cases with psychic abilities.

    I fully and totally dislike what the caller Bradley James said about how “in order to reach a certain level of genius, you have to have a certain level of crazy” i’m sorry but that is BULLSHIT! Just because someone has the audacity to spew outlandish trash and claims that have no basis, evidence or demonstrable proof doesn’t mean it is all facts or substantial. He refused to face up to blatant lies, misinformation and falsehood of Terrence and is making excuses saying he is in the early stages of his development. GET OUTTA HERE! He mentions that elements produce sound, Terrence said the sound of Beryllium can break up water like electrolysis. This is demonstrably false because, Beryllium is the only alkaline earth metal that doesn’t react to water so even if you could prove it makes a sound, it doesn’t react with water anyway. I wish folks spewing trash like Terrence weren’t platformed. It is annoying because the gullible and credulous like Bradley James want to believe it. I sympathise with J Wit lol

    • @j-witprotection
      @j-witprotection 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My sentiments exactly. I didn’t even respond to the “genius” claim because we were on too long and it would take too much time. Unfortunately, because “hot takes” attract more eyes and ultimately generate more advertising dollars, we probably haven’t seen the last of people like Terrance being platformed. Some content is dignified by merely responding to it and this is why certain things are not worth entertaining imo.

    Great episode guys, That opening got me thinking, did Jesus ever speak in tongues? It's also funny that Paul and Luke (who were companions) are the only New Testament authors who mention tongues. The New Testament and church is full of contradictory beliefs. Jesus says: "Don't use vain repetition." Paul says: "Speak in tongues"...(p.s.Do it privately) The Evangelical Church says: "Nice "recommendation" Paul but we'll have half a service of speaking in nothing but tongues." It became too many contradiction for me.

    The Peer Review Process is the way scientists use to repeat and confirm the discovery of their community of peers. Once the science goes mainstream, the only way for the end user of the tech is for them to reference tech reviews m, engineering specifications and the physics used to acquire the new properties and performance. For most, understanding these documents is not possible without understanding and education. The customer has to understand that the products is not supernatural but cutting edge science and engineering. Heron of Alexandria, the ingenious Roman inventor created the same phenomenon with his inventions. He engineered the first steam powered self opening doors to the Roman Temple and coin operated holy water dispensers. To the common people it was magical; a testament to the God which deepens the believers faith.

    OK, I will. stop commenting after this one. I'm having a lot of mind-bombs go off, one after another, listening to you. I've always loathed Paul, even as a good church-going child, so mean and always telling people what to do (especially women)--and you're helping me understand why more deeply. And the banana (apple)! Wow. It reminded me of an Irish myth, where Finn (a sort of mythical hero) eats the magical salmon that ate the nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom. When he ate that salmon, he could understand the language of animals. The difference being that the druids didn't take this literally, and they didn't make it into some big exile drama, or make the salmon into a sacrifice, or Finn into the One God.

    This conversation got me thinking about the whole sin thing. Bible god could have arranged the creation of man so that humans could still have free will and choose not to sin. Just like we have 5 senses to detect physical stimuli: enjoyment of pleasant sensations and avoidance of unpleasant ones, Bible god could have given us a “sin” sense that like a pain stimulus would be so unpleasant that we would choose to avoid it at all cost. Just like I would never choose to put my hand in a fire or eat a pile of dog shit, It could have made sin similarly repugnant. If Bible god didn’t want us to have extramarital sex, make sex such a painful experience, similar to that of childbirth, that the only time someone would choose to have sex would be because they REALLY wanted to have children. Instead, Bible god decided to make sin a pleasant experience. I wonder why.

    Let’s see from the text who the laws was given to: Exodus 20 New International Version The Ten Commandments 20 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me. Note: God speaks to his audience he has just removed and liberated from Egypt. And he goes on to present his favorite people his laws saying “YOU” …’shall have no other gods…” So technically the Torah is a Jewish constitution not meant for the gentile to be religiously bounded to since the gentile is a subhuman species. You can even see in Isaiah that none of these standards are applicable for non-Jew outside the people of Israel. Yahweh only bothered himself with his people. Paul tries to suffocate gentiles with his Mesopotamian shenanigans. And the moment you learn or accept the law as instructional, you are a dead man. You have swallowed a poison pill you cannot unseen. 😂

    1:35:20 since you raised a philosophical question, i will put my apologist hat on. i think they mean that sin is abstract in the sense that it is a concept (or principle like Brady said). an action against God's (Good) nature would be sin (missing the mark). you can sin by an action or omission (when you ought to do x and don't). so when a person sins that is how sin is instantiated (from abstract to particular/concrete). some Christians hold to a parasitic-only view of sin: St. Augustine talked about evil as a privation of goodness, meaning that evil has no existence in itself. which I deny. about the duality; as you guys know, being ex-reformed Christians, God can allow for agents to sin, so that He will be glorified in the righteous punishments of sin, even though He is not sinning Himself (there are issues of entrapment and blameworthiness but that is another can of worms). what J-wit is hinting towards is the logical problem of evil (the supposed contradiction and impossibility of an all-good and all-powerful God existing and there still being evil), which I think is solved by people like Alvin Plantinga. (I think evolution and the fact that there is pain, suffering, death and sickness before the fall is a way bigger problem). like I said before, I am struggling to even hold on the the basics of Christianity, so I am not that interested in theological dungeons and dragons debates, I am just (like the guys) putting my apologist hat on to think of possible answers.

I also want totry answering Brady's question about the individual who credits Christianity with their growth. I think Christianity stops you from taking credit for any good things you do. You started being a better person as a Christian because you put in the effort. Jesus didn't do that. YOU did that. But then you can't even acknowledge your own efforts because all good things are credited to God.

It is not just about constantly talking about god--you are teaching critical thinking skills--thanks for the profundity---link of mysogyny, marriage and slavery--eating fruit as magic, discussion on wills, sin, and the inhumanity and cruelty of Paul's teaching, etc.--please do not be deterred by nonsense--I am sure I speak for others when I say your presentations are not only very informative and very profound but they also bring a lot of joy after years of traumatic indoctrination.

    Donning my Xian hat...I used to deal with Rom 7:7-8 by saying that BOTH the Mosaic Law AND the general revelation law "written on the hearts" of non-Israelites tempted people to sins. What the Mosaic Law did was illuminate how impossible it is to keep the commandments perfectly. Therefore I'm in need of a savior to keep them perfectly on my behalf. So: I didn't move from (relative) innocence without the Law to guilt under it, but from (relative) ignorance of my moral depravity to a sharpened awareness of it. That's how I would try to steel man that part of the argument. (Paul's arguments still have all the flaws and weaknesses that you guys have been pointing out, btw -- I'm in agreement with y'all's critiques.) (Maybe you guys will get to this yourselves later on; I'm only at 1:15:00 so far!)

    I'm always a bit torn about critiques of God's goodness and justice. I can appreciate their validity now as an ex-believer, but while still in the faith I would have strongly countered that you cannot evaluate a transcendent, omnipotent, all-wise being in human terms. Those standards just do not apply. I think that's why it took so long for me to deconvert, and why my departure was mostly on the basis that God evidently does not exist at all. If God did exist, then definitionally, all of his actions and judgments would be right.

    • @david_deboe
      @david_deboe 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Like, if a man (perhaps an older gentleman with a lot of orange makeup) came up to you and said "I deserve your absolute loyalty and obedience," you'd tell him to f*** off, and you would be right. He's just a man. Even a highly competent and moral man wouldn't deserve those things from you. But God, if he were real, would exist in a whole other category and different rules would apply. This is Barth's "dialectical" view: God is essentially *unlike* us instead of being an amplified, superlative version of us. I sure did love me some Karl Barth back in the day. He was my weapons supplier to keep defending all this fictional nonsense for longer than I should have.

    We speak a monologue in our mind, Christians claim it's a dialogue with their imaginary friend Jesus. The single biggest gift is no longer being a slave to superstition.

    Sorry to be a bit pedantic here, but being a long-time internet surfer (lol) I don't think posts that have only text in them and no meme-like format count as memes. If memes were like that, I guess every blog post or piece of text could be a meme, but then the definition would be meaningless.

    Thanks a lot--another great show--it is amazing that even if you have deconstructed and deconverted, shows like yours raise issues that you never thought about but that actually bring joy and happiness--it was a lot of crap and indoctrination, and for me psychological abuse--we have to keep on unlearning or re-learning. Thank you.

    Russel Brand did the same thing that I recall being a catalyst for deconstruction was that so much was based on feelings rather than reason and rational. Every other word out of his mouth was some form of other word feel. I can get all the feels I want without it, but it will never be a driver for forming points of view.
