May God rest his soul, my Imam who is originally from Yemen gave a similar commentary on what fitna means. It's a test by fire but also it's related to the process of puryfing gold with fire. The impurities burn off and only the pure gold remains. Fitna is like that for the humans. Done an experienced properly it makes you better and stronger.
