3 short yesrs layer this 98 pound weaking became the besst that won the California state championship at 160 pounds, destroying the second ranked wrestler in the country, cael Valencia (brother of 2 time NCAA national champion zahid Valencia). He went on to wrestle for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Was a 3 time NCAA national qualifer and currently (Nov 2023) has an Intermat ranking of 10th in the country at 165 lbs.

This was the turning point in Andrew Sparks ' wrestling career. When he broke then beat the higher ranked Buchanan wrestler, Rocco Contino, Andrew knew and the California wrestling community realized this kid was an underrated beast. He went on to spank the number one ranked (in California), number 2 ranked (in the US) Cael Valencia in the 2020 California State finals 7-1 to become the 160lb state champion. Andrew Sparks never stepped on the mat until his freshman year in high school as a skinny little 106 pounder.
