มุมมอง 3.3K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ill be heading off to the EU for a few months of this year. This is a description of my folding travel/touring bike. I talk about the modifications and restoration I did to get this Bike Friday New World Tourist up and running. I also go over my racks and baggage for the trip. Been watching all your videos. What a great way for us to see what a bike tour looks like. What a wealth of knowledge your sharing. I would like to tell you about your pedals. They were designed by Grant Peterson of Riv Bikes. He called them Grip Kings, MKS the Jp builder of them. Calls them Lambda when they are sold to be qr pedals. Both my wife and I have them on our NWT bike Fridays. I think the name you said Magura only makes the best brakes in the world, never heard of any else by them.
Your quite right. I must have swapped the names around. But they are MKS peddles and they worked flawlessly for the tour.
Super build, I like the friction shifters. Good luck and riding on your up coming tour.
It's unfortunate that you were yelled at. Perhaps if more people go into that space they will actually put up a sign..... Or maybe the guy who yelled at you also works in the sewer museum stink tunel? 😅🙃
You know I didn't ask. Different city though would have been quite the commute.
I wish you showed how it folds.
I'm back from the trip now. I'll do another video of it folding and packing
@@mattmcconnell6870 , awesome, thanks. Do a video of your vacation. Show us where you went, the dancing naked girls & such.
Can you say more about your portable shower?
Hey. The shower I use is a 3D printed head that screws onto a bottle thread. It's not complex and anyone can make one. The key is to print one with a siphon tube that reaches the bottom of the bottle. That way it gives you a continuous flow of water.
How good is that first free night in the wild?
It's the very best.
Its a fun place to ride bikes and has lots of great cultural activities ;)
Awesome
This looks like fun
Hey man. Love your stuff. The bike ended up working very well. I'll have to post another video on what I need to change for next time. Did you see my front rack? Too small for you?
@@mattmcconnell6870 Looked good, the front rack doesnt have to be too big, it just holds the weight rest of the load can be held tightly with inner tube rubber. Having slightly small rack is better for folding the bike and packing it for travel too. My first time in Holland i got one of those dutch bikes too with the big front racks it was pretty cool
It did end up working well. I like how it attaches to the bike. Although the first bit of inner tube I brought with me snapped and I had to replace it with a thin road innertube which turned out to be more durable.
Wow I really like this
Thank you. I worked hard on it.
TH-cam recommended your folding bike build and packing videos to me, which I appreciate and got a few nice tips (esp phone mounting, & light packing). I stayed for the sightseeing videos. I think you'd be able to get a bigger audience by showing more bike details, time lapse or skip to different sceneries, interactions & issues along the way, instead of skipping to the tourist attractions & museums. A couple of suggestions: 1. A small mic wind muffler velcroed to your phone's mic. 2. Shorter cranks for long distance knee pains, which I also have. Anyway, happy travels!
Hey. Thank you for watching my videos. I very much appreciate your feedback. Your not the first person to comment on a more bike and scene focused video structure. I'm back from this trip now, but as I edit more back footage I'm going to do my best. The phone mic sound issue is definitely a problem. This is actually the audio off of a pare of Bluetooth headphones most of the time. My phones case makes the audio really impressively bad. Although I can hear it switching back and forth between the phone audio and the headphones from time to time. I try to edit it out the worst of it.
What’s the pump brand?
The pump for my air mattress is a thermarest. The bike pump is a lazyne I think. The markings rubbed off a while ago.
Great street art
I know right?
Valkenburg is in The Netherlands.
This is why I should not edit things out of order. Thank you.
Good job on the restoration! Yes, Rok Straps are good stuff.
Very helpful video, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for the first update, we hope you continue to have lots of fun!
You may know that an American, originally Army Folder: Montague, is also sold in a civil version, and with "ordinary size wheels" and gears! As I am an owner of a Top Brompton, the formerly named, Superlight Model, I know that the small wheels gives much more rolling resistance than larger wheels! And if possible, I may advise You to visit Denmark, also with a brilliant system for people on bikes, also bridges only for those (and walkers), crossing the harbor in Cph. And even with a tallest point hardly 200m the Country is - far from flat😁, which is really felt on a bike! And if interested, we still have a 1.WW Fortress Wall round Copenhagen, mostly as built. It kept Denmark out of the war, as we had invited a German Officer up to look at the built, and from his Report we could, after the war, see that he expected it would be too costly to take Copenhagen. So though absurdly expensive, it was worth the money! Today most is a Park, but some areas are restored and now has buildings made as the originals, from their drawings. You are able to ride a bike along most of its length round Copenhagen, to the large lakes to the North, intended to be floded, in case of war. Finn. Denmark
I'm very firmilure with Montague bikes. When I was looking at different folders a year or two ago they as well as Brompton came up. My first folding bike purchase for this project was an older montague frame. I do like there structure but I just could not get it to fold small enough to check on an airplane without additional fees. I think the Friday is a good middle ground between the Brompton and Montague, at least for my needs. My current plan is to head south from here but Denmark is already on my list of future plans. Maybe if it gets too hot in France I'll take a train north and check it out. Thanks for the advice.
@@mattmcconnell6870 I have honestly never been close to one, so I can't tell? But I could imagine that the US product quality is lacking a little? The not so well known, Danish invented, "Petersen bike", mostly made in British Dursley round the former, last century, also had a folding version for Army use, but I hardly think they are still being produced, as no one had heard of of airplanes by then. The ordinary bikes are still being produced, also in Denmark, intended for more modern parts/equipment to be used.
The top row of bicycles, in the parking, are able to be pulled out for a better reach!
Yes they are. It's a fantastic system
looks like a great time. enjoy
Hey! you and Juice went together. Nice! For sure, someone will watch. 😉
Hey brother. Long time no see. Drop me an email sometime I miss hearing from you.
Good luck on your upcoming trip, thank you for sharing!
I'm looking forward to following your European trip and learning new tips for cycle touring on a folding bike.
Interesting video. I prefer self standing tents because whenever i see a canopy i like to pitch my tent under it. Typically a canopy or roof will have a hardstanding area beneath such as timber decking or concrete.
That is a fairly good point. I've opted for the tent I'm bringing mostly for its low profile low visibility design. But it has some drawbacks to go along with its advantages.
@mattmcconnell6870 Schools tend to have lots of covered walkways etc that you can pitch your tent under and are very quite on the weekends.
That's a pro tip right there.
I suggest getting a quadlock phone mount for you phone
Quad lock systems are amazing. Sadly also rather expensive. I don't ride with my phone on my bars often enough to justify the cost I don't think. But if I normaly kept my phone on my bars a quad would definitely be a good choice.
Thank you. The shifters I used are a clamp on style. So I'm useing a pare of these. www.ebay.com/itm/322419945083?epid=1304044533&itmmeta=01HW4GSGPYZ3AWTHBJWQG5V7TZ&hash=item4b11b9ee7b:g:~0wAAOSwwUViZMU6&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4Cwb53ktt--ssKDdTPgLto0Ipc734M1sJpMNWaZNUW3%2FqioVwc5JhwbCkLvtfXC1AcTIA2S5gLKP0ygHE2rhUrce%2FF6w83B3iUGj5ARHtQ5kry4kHJXzl7rmaRkzi4wAdA2mIECl2esbGyfw%2FMTH2Y565uu3vd93pOtakK5iFn4uGcbS5EZKhpdK9PMJ4aXb2F5RXwLB6LxowkbU1np6%2B64rM3lByCG46l5g513%2Fb5TeOZwNHZani25YILsm1pUQ6NGV9%2Fwec8yLC9XBG2M%2BFwZ9jLx9YfYjUx9aO%2BI%2F7H6A%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8SL5pDhYw The clamps fit my handlebars very well. The best part being that they come with spare parts. A full leaver assembly has to be pulled off of each one. So if and when the time comes I can use them to replace the parts on there now.
Cool build :) where did you get the handlebar mounts for the downtube shifters?
They come with the shifters I used. I linked them on another comment.
Nice work. How long is the Ti seat post? Is it from eBay?
Thank you. I did infact get the seatpost on ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/164776619389 I got the longest one they sold and trimmed it a little to fit my needs.
Hey! Thanks for the video! I’d love to see another video review where someone takes this pack out for a week long trip to really test it - airports, trains, city hostels and trekking up mountains for a few nights. I’m looking for a pack exactly like this one, to do all that for 1-3 months at a time. I’m interested in the comfort factor, longevity and what size person this pack fits. (Namely a 5’6” woman 125lbs.). Thanks!
Thanks for this! Do you think there are spots to clip a strap to and turn it into a makeshift duffle bag? I will have a cat backpack on my back (with my cat inside lol) when traveling through the airports and whatnot, so I think adding a strap so that it can dangle in front of me will make it easier for transporting between locations, rather than juggling two backpacks and my rolling suitcase. Thanks for answering this question if you can!
I think you could make something work between the top load lifter and the bottom one.
Thanks Matt! Great video
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
Super helpful. Appreciate this video a lot. I ended up buying this backpack.
I'm very glad it was helpful.
Thanks a lot for sharing your detailed review. It is extremely helpful! I am hitting the order button now.🙂
That is good to hear. I hope it works out for you.
Hey Matt! This is Joe, one of the owners at Alpine Ridge Outfitters! Thanks so much for the review and feedback of our Expanding Travel Pack. We're always working to innovate new designs so your thoughts are greatly appreciated!
Happy to help Joe. Thanks for all your hard work.
Will this backpack ever return in stock? Would definitely be interested in picking one up!
