Improvisation: Toccata in the style of Merulo (on a self built Harpsichord)
A (carefully prepared) improvisation, attempting to meet the style of Claudio Merulo in his two books of Toccatas (published in 1598 and 1604).
The Instrument used for this recording is my first harpsichord that I built from scratch in 2023/2024. It is modeled on Italian instruments of the 16th and 17th centuries with a compass of C/E-c''', featuring split sharps for d#/eb and g#/ab as well as a beautiful parchment rose made by Elena Dal Cortivo.
Temperament: 1/4-comma meantone, 440 Hz.
Recorded in Kartäuserkirche Basel, Switzerland, 7/24.

Any chance to get your plans/dimensions of the clavichord? 😊
Sounds exellent. What wood is the soundboard and how thick?
Thanks! It’s Swiss spruce from Bergün. The soundboard is 3mm thick on the sides and slightly thicker towards the bass side and rose, approx. 4mm.
😀
Well done! This piece sounds like it came right out of the baroque period! It is beautiful!
Beautiful video. Convincing performance. Lovely resonant instrument. You have a promising instrument building career in front of you, should you choose to head in that direction.
A very poorly made video. You can see almost nothing, it's too dark and out of focus or the hands obscure everything. I don't want to waste my time with something like this.
Way beyond impressive!
Großartig lieber Valentin ♥️
Dear Mr. Richter, What a lovely sounding instrument you have constructed, matched by your very fine improvisation. What more ancient and beautiful place to make this recording than in a church of the Order of Carthusians, whose motto is, “The Cross Stands, While the World Turns.” It is said of this Order of Monks and Nuns that they have never been deformed, therefore never reformed. You have much in common with this ancient Order, both in your handcrafting of this lovely Italian harpsichord, and your replication of an improvised Toccata. Thank you very much for sharing both this instrument and your music with us. What a lovely gift. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario, Canada.
Costruttore, esecutore, compositore. Bravo, bravo, bravo.
Bravissimo! Bello strumento!
A wonderful improvisation and a fine-sounding instrument. Iron or brass stringing...?
Thank you! It’s all brass.
Beautiful little Italian! So suave, with that salty tang in the temperament. Love it.
Lovely on all levels. What plan/blueprint did you use as a guide?
Thank you! I designed my own plan after looking at various historical designs as well as replicas of Italian harpsichords.
nice job
Beautiful!
Bravo on all counts!
Beautifully played! 🎼 🎶💕
Lovely instrument!!!
genial 😍💙
Very nice! Thank you for sharing
Die Hauptorgel der Martinikerk Groningen ist für mich eines der herausragendsten Instrumente der norddeutsch-niederländischen Orgelbautradition.
Could someone recommend a website or video that explains how to build a clavichord step by step? It'd mean so much to me. It's one of my goals in life
The out-of-focus blurring detracted from the quality of this otherwise very cool video.
Do you sell these instruments?
What temperament?
It used to be constructed for a rather mild temperament (somewhat similar to Valotti) - but (by bending the tangents a bit) I changed it to a slightly modified meantone temperament later.
Hello is it possible to buy blueprints as well?
those keyfronts are so beautiful - and the sound
How to get the sheet music ? thanks on advance
Do you have instagram? Send me a message (@valentinlrichter) and I will send it to you. Regards!
I built a Zuckerman clavichord kit in the 80s but sold it to move out west unfortunately. I have a 5 octave one and have thought of putting heavier tangents on it. Have you ever thought of using very heavy tangents to give a louder sound?
I just discovered this site and your presence on TH-cam. I am most impressed. Your playing is so lovely. I just received the Sweelinq set for this organ today and I am keen to try out out on my system. Subscribed to your channel and will see what other videos you have. Greetings from Canada.
I would like to create my own clavichord, can you please tell me where to start? Is there any exhaustive book or manual out there that teaches it?
Congratulations on a beautiful instrument, and a beautifully edited video. I built the King of Sweden clavichord kit that I had on the shelf, for something to do during the lockdown in 2020. They are remarkable little instruments. Not quite like my concert harpsichord, but they have a charm all their own, don't they.... Beautiful.
Thank you Lucas for an astounding performance on an incredibly beautiful instrument.
Wow! Really cool, well done!
Lovely ❤
If you made it out of collarbones, it would be a claviclechord 🥁chssss
Beautiful work, congratulations!
Höchst beeindruckend! 👏
Who composed this work?
It‘s my own work. Regards!
@@valentinrichter It is fabulous..
Is it possible?
First of all, congratulations for the beautiful work with this clavichord. I'd like to know where you got those ornamental pieces you glued to the front of the keyboard. In the video they appear at 1:52. I thank you in advance for the information.
The keyfronts were made by Elena Dal Cortivo.
@@valentinrichter Thank you, but how is it possible to buy these parts with her?
@@valentinrichter Thanks, I found her website where she sells all the parts.
Hello Lucas, thanks for the video. May I ask you some questions? I'm thinking of building myself a clavichord and am curious about some particulars. How many hours had it taken you to build this clavichord, from start to finish? Also, I'm thinking of buying a plan from Marc Vogel, and am not sure if plans are enough to build from scratch.
Hello, I didn't count exactly, but I estimate that it took me about 350-400 hours of work in total, of which about a third was for planning and organising materials. I can recommend that you join groups that discuss the building of clavichords or harpsichords, for example on facebook. There you can get an impression of the building process and develop a feeling for it. Good Luck! Valentin
@@valentinrichter Thank you for the answer, Valentin! I also assumed it would take around 350-400 hours, so it's good to hear. I will check some groups, and try to get a feeling for it as you say. Thank you! Burak
The brano is Weiss?
How is the playing portion of the key attatched to the rest of the lever? at 1:44 I can see the two must be made separately. Do you dowl the two together? Awesome video!
Nice, aesthetically pleasurable video. Thanks for that.
Thank you - a magical film.
Beautiful! Is it improvised?
Thanks! No, it was prepared.
Not only is your playing very fine, but the video presentation of this landmark instrument and church is gorgeous.
